Arrival
UnpredictableI'm sitting by the window, staring out into darkness, watching the rain beat against the glass. I haven't talked since I left my home--- I mean the building. I have no home now.
Lay sits down next to me. He doesn't speak. Neither do I.
"Cheer up," he says at last. "It could be worse."
"How can it be worse?"
"Well for one thing, you didn't have to leave your family, did you?"
"Richie's like family to me," I say quietly.
"Still. Where are your parents, actually? Abroad?"
"They're dead," I reply curtly. Silence.
"I'm sorry."
I stare out the window for a long time before I speak again. "They died when I was almost 15."
"How old are you now?"
"16."
"Do you still... miss them?"
"Every single day," I whisper. Somehow, my eyes are still dry. I've cried all my tears and now my tear glands have dried up. Lay pats my shoulder awkwardly.
"I'm so sorry. I... I shouldn't have asked."
"It's alright. You didn't know."
Another long silence before I decide to change the subject and ask him something that's been bugging me. Lay's eager to answer.
"What happened to Kai in the end back there?"
"Tao fought him, but it was over pretty quick... he broke Kai's legs and he disappeared."
"He broke his legs?!"
"Yeah, Tao's strong like that."
Oh. My. God. And he's saying it as if Kai's legs are toothpicks. I change the subject again.
"Kai's power is teleporting, isn't it?"
"Yeah, you figured that out didn't you?" Lay says with a smile.
"Do you... does everyone here have powers?"
"Yes," he pauses. "Kris is supposed to give you a full explanation, but uh... we all have our own powers, and mine's healing."
"That explains it," I mumble.
"Huh?"
"That's why my knees are alright, isn't it? And my head, and that warm tingly feeling..."
"Yeah," Lay smiles.
I look down at the floor. "Thanks."
"Anytime."
Long pause.
"Where are we going actually?"
"Korea. Near the North Korea border. People tend to stay away from there. Pretty isolated."
"Ah." So many questions, but I don't know which to ask.
"Fifteen minutes to touchdown." Luhan announces over the speakers.
"So fast? We just left Hong Kong not too long ago..."
"Yeah, Tao's done something with time, I don't know what, so we're travelling real fast but we don't feel it."
"Lay, can you get your back in here, please," Luhan says over the speakers. Lay laughs.
"Right, we're gonna get there real soon, okay?"
"Okay."
The rest of the fifteen minutes fly by as I sit alone in the back of the plane.
It's three in the morning and we've arrived at our destination, whatever that may be. I follow Tao, Luhan and Lay into a building, suitcase in hand.
Lay leads me up a staircase and I see a long, dimly lit corridor.
"This is the dormitory," he whispers. "Bathroom last one on the right." He pushes open the first door on the right.
"This is your room. You should have a roommate, but we haven't found her yet." It's a simple room, though relatively big, with 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 chairs, 2 of everything. I flop down onto the bed on the right. "Get some sleep," Lay advises. "We'll take care of the details and other stuff tomorrow." He smiles and closes the door softly.
"Ughhh," I groan, kicking off my shoes. I don't think I'll be able to sleep, but I fall fast asleep in minutes.
