I met a boy today.
Mom had forgotten about me again, driving off in that expensive car of hers and leaving me alone in the dust. I’ve gotten used to it by now. It happened much too often, and at the time I was too tired and cold to care.
I whipped out my cellphone and called her, which took three tries before she finally picked up. I got the usual, “Oh honey, I am so sorry. I will be there in ten minutes.”, which in fact, usually took half an hour.
I sighed and put the device back in my pocket. The skies were overcast, and heavy rain poured down from the grey clouds, dampening my hair and clothes. The jarring, chilling wind left goosebumps on my skin, and not wanting to risk a cold, I headed towards the plaza nearby for shelter.
The area was vacant, except for some unfortunate people who had decided to go outside at the wrong time. There were a few smokers that occupied a fast food restaurant, and I stood as far away from them as possible.
I tried to ignore the harsh conditions as I kept my eyes peeled for a red convertible. I was so concentrated on finding her that I didn’t even notice how cold I was, until a voice pointed it out.
“You’re shivering.”
I immediately turned my head at the direction where the voice came from, and there stood a boy with a dull expression on his face. He seemed to be not much older than me, but the way he was glaring made me feel like I was much smaller.
