Epilogue
PareballesThe moment Jinsol felt the sunlight streaming into her room, her heart clenched. She knew what day it was, and her mind went straight to one single thought.
Him.
She stood up quickly, knowing she had to hurry up so she could be free before noon. She put on her jeans and a shirt, and ran downstairs to get something for breakfast.
Damn it, it wasn’t time to try to look pretty yet she was selfishly wishing she could wear a bit of makeup. At least she wasn’t wearing her old high-school uniform, so she could actually run to the station –in total resignation, since she never managed to get a seat–. God, she wished Namjoon could be there, if not to see him, at least so she could have a comfortable ride.
When she got to the campus, she ran her way to her teacher’s offices. She needed to hand in a couple essays and then she would visit the little kid that her teacher assigned for her.
“I’m looking forward to your work,” her teacher said, a smile curving up her lips. Jinsol couldn’t hold back the nervousness that she always felt when someone expected that much from her, “you don't know how thankful I am that you were the only student who dared to talk to Seokmin. I don't know how you did it, but he seems so much brighter these days.”
“I’m not too sure either,” she mumbled, but her teacher was pleased enough to even notice.
The only thing she could think of was Namjoon telling her she was good with people. And how that was quite a talent. He probably didn’t even remember those words, but for her, they helped her choose her path. Those words were the reason why she decided to become a social worker. Because people trusted her and she realized human beings are vulnerable, and at some point, we all need someone who we can trust to put out lives together.
Jinsol looked down, a bit embarrassed.
She didn’t know if she would’ve raised her hand if it wasn’t because that kid’s story was so similar to Namjoon’s. Seokmin lived with his stepfather, and was physically abused constantly. He needed so much help, but he seemed to trust Jinsol enough to talk to her, and that seemed to be working for now. His tics were slowly disappearing, and he was opening himself more and more everytime they talked.
Just like it happened with Namjoon.
Not only his story was similar to Namjoon’s, but overall his looks reminded her of him as well. His face was round and his cheeks were quite squishy, and adding dimples didn’t help much. She was slowly growing attached to that kid, and knowing she’d eventually let him go made her sad.
“My tooth is falling,” he pouted when Jinsol sat next to him.
For now, he was staying at an orphanage, but the whole procedure in order to actually let him meet another family would take a long time.
“For real? But you’re only six!”
He chuckled and smiled, showing her little loose tooth like it was the most exciting thing in the world.
“Noona,” he started, “can I go with you today?”
She felt slightly moved by his question, knowing that he wanted to spend more time with her, but she hesitated when she remembered that she couldn’t be too close to him.
“Why is that?”
His lips trembled.
“I’m really lonely here,” he said.
She guessed she could take him with her for a few hours.
“You should be quiet here, okay?” she ruffled her hair as she walked to the hall where the boys should be. Exactly one year ago, she had been at this same place with Namjoon and everyone else. She couldn’t help but think that someone as young as Taehyung didn’t belong there.
“Noona!” Someone shouted, and Jinsol facepalmed herself when she realized it was Jungkook.
The past year, she had been helping him with Math, and they slowly became closer. She wasn’t used to the whole ‘Noona’ thing with Jungkook, but he definitely loved calling her that.
Seokmin pulled her hand and gave her the look. “You said I had to be quiet?”
“Uh- I mean, you should.”
He frowned. “Why can he shout then?”
“He can’t,” someone interrupted, causing Jinsol to look up. Her body felt tense all of a sudden.
After Taehyung passed away, she hadn’t seen Namjoon at all. She hated it, because she knew he was dealing with an important loss but he kept pushing her away. It made her crazy that they could only message each other, even though sometimes it took days before they held a real conversation (as real as it can get) because their free hours didn’t match.
All she knew about Namjoon was thanks to Jungkook, Yoongi, Hoseok and Jin.
“He’s just being a rebel,” Namjoon continued. “Don’t become someone like him, okay?”
“Hyung!” Jungkook rolled his eyes, but Namjoon didn’t bother to say anything else. Instead, he walked straight to Jinsol and gave her a smile. A shy one, and it made her wonder if he felt as weird as she did.
“Hey,” he whispered, barely rubbing her thumb with hers as he walked straight to Seokmin. He bent down to match his height and greeted him with a welcoming smile. “Hey, little buddy. What’s your name?”
Jinsol didn’t think she had ever seen that side of Namjoon, but she didn’t mind.
Seokmin looked at Jinsol and when she nodded, he looked back at Namjoon.
“Seokmin.”
“And…” Namjoon’s eyes went straight to Jinsol.
“Ah… I’m taking care of him for a few hours. He’s really calm.”
“I thought you were an only child?”
Seokmin looked a bit uncomfortable by Namjoon’s question, and actually, Namjoon seemed to notice too. Jinsol quickly changed the topic to something else, and Namjoon, who was sitting next to Jin and everyone else on a circle, moved a little so Jinsol and Seokmin could sit there too.
“Seokmin, let’s greet everyone else, uh?”
She introduced everyone and Seokmin greeted them cheerfully.
Jinsol sat next to Namjoon, and all the boys chuckled a little before going back to what they were doing.
“You guys are so cheesy,” Jin teased.
“Hyung,” Namjoon whined before Jinsol could say something, “we’re not doing or saying anything.”
“I can see the two of you looking at each other every second!!”
“Noona,” Seokmin’s jaw dropped, “he’s your boyfriend?”
Jinsol choked at the very unexpected question. It was all so weird when it came to Namjoon. They had kissed, and they acted like a couple when they were around each other, but she couldn’t remember a time when they had labeled themselves that way. They hadn’t even gone on dates or anything, and they hadn’t met in almost a year. With college draining her, even Cyphers were a huge no, no, no. She was always dead at 10 pm or somewhere near that time.
“Well,” Jinsol started.
“I am,” Namjoon answered, causing Jinsol to choke even more. “Why? Is she your first love too?”
A second later, Jin burst out in his usual windshield wiper laugh that in the end, caused everyone to laugh like crazy. Everyone, except for Namjoon, Jinsol and Seokmin.
“No,” Seokmin replied, “but I don’t like you.”
“Seokmin,” Jinsol said softly, she didn’t mean to make him uncomfortable there. In fact, she was totally sure that he would love absolutely everyone.
“Hey, little man,” Namjoon joked, but Seokmin’s frown grew deeper. “Don’t get mad at me, okay? There are so many pretty girls out there, I know you can find someone who’s your age while I take care of Noona. Am I right?”
Seokmin pouted. “I guess you are.”
“I think it’s time, Seokmin,” Jinsol said, and the little kid turned around a bit disappointed.
They had spent a few hours there, sitting in
