Palimpsest
PareballesLast night, Namjoon didn’t let Taehyung go easily. They were laying down in their own beds; Taehyung on the right side of the room, Namjoon on the left. There was only a small drawer between them, yet Namjoon had never felt so excluded and far of Tae’s life.
He felt as if he was missing out on a lot about Taehyung’s life, and it hurt him to think that he was having a hard time on his own. Whatever it was, Namjoon knew there was a reason, and knowing Taehyung, that reason was someone else. Even if it scared him, even if his fingers kept moving unconsciously because he was nervous to know it, he had to know. And if he could help him, he would do it.
“Tae,” Namjoon started, and that’s all Taehyung needed to feel his eyes watery again.
“Hmm?”
“Talk to me. Whatever is happening, tell me. I will help you.”
Taehyung thought about it, but he never meant to drag him down too, and everything was so close to finish. One more person, and he would be out of the gang. He would go back to training; he would find a company and if he didn’t, he would go back to school. Maybe he could even start college with Jungkook.
Well, maybe he couldn’t aim that high now. But he would try.
“It’s all good, hyung. Don’t worry.”
Of course he would do that. Of course Taehyung wouldn’t want to worry him.
Namjoon rolled his eyes as he slid on the bed and sat down instead, resting his back on the headboard. He didn’t say anything, but he thought carefully every single word.
“Taehyung. I don’t care what it is,” he looked at him, but Taehyung was facing the opposite wall. It was dark, yet Namjoon could see his shoulders moving silently at a heavy rhythm.
“Taehyung,” Namjoon repeated. “I won’t think anything,” he said, and he was really forcing himself not to think absolutely anything, “I won’t judge you, I won’t come up with dumb conclusions and trust me, I will be on your side.”
The plea in Namjoon’s voice was as clear as a crystal, and the openness pulled the tightest of Tae’s heartstrings, it touched that hidden soft spot that Taehyung always had for Namjoon. And it made him want to trust him, as he always did.
“Hyung,” Taehyung said, causing Namjoon to look up expectantly, “how about going for a ride?”
For Taehyung, ride was another word for adventure.
They left in the middle of the night. It was cold, so they carefully took some jackets out of the drawers and made their way to the door, and even though nobody was going to scold them for it, they still sneaked out of the house, tiptoeing carefully so they wouldn't make any sound. Just like in the old times.
Taehyung got shivers down his spine as soon as he stepped a foot out of there, and slipped in his hands into his royal blue leather jacket. He looked at Namjoon, who had been smart enough to wear a black beanie and a camo print jacket.
“It’s cold, uh?” Namjoon said, putting his arm around Taehyung as they both walked together. There was no need to say it out loud, they both knew where they were heading to.
They walked all the way there, they even ran a few blocks just because they could. Because it was cold and because thinking about reliving their old adventures rushed the adrenaline up their bodies.
It was that ugly, abandoned park near their old house. They had spent a lot of moments there back when they were kids. It wasn’t that ugly then, but at night, it was quite scary. They must have really grown up if there wasn’t even the tiniest bit of fear inside them.
While they had a spot of their own back at the beach, that space belonged to the seven of them. It was all theirs.
But this one place, this ugly
