Life Support

"We're on our way, love. We have to talk about something." Soo Jin's mother said into the phone, making her stomach churn. Whenever her mother had to talk to her about something, she knew it wasn't going to be good.

Last time she said so, it was the day her father, Kang Ho, had died. She pulled her out of school after texting her they needed to talk and drove her home. She sat her down on their couch and told her. She broke down and so did she. After a while, they both accepted it but it's still a touchy subject for her mother.

She arrived a few moments later, knocking on the door softly before entering Soo Jin's room. Tears rolled down her soft cheeks and she sniffled as she plopped onto the bed. Soo Jin instantly furrowed her eyes in sympathy.

"What's going on, mom?" Soo Jin asked. tightened as her body begged to shed some tears alongside her mother, but she suppressed it. Her mother looked at her nervously and placed a hand on her lap, "I really love you and I'm so sorry" Soo Jin's worries worsened as she waited for her mother to give her details. Growing impatient, she snapped.

"What is going on?!" Soo Min jumped at her daughter's shout and sighed.

"We- I don't have enough money." Twiddling her thumbs, the tiny woman in front of Soo Jin tried to distract herself from crying even more than she had on the way to the hospital.

"What do you mean?" She couldn't help but shed a tear. Nothing could go right for Soo Jin, ever. No matter what, whenever there is a glimmer of hope in the distance, it diminishes.

"I don't have enough money to pay for your treatment. The insurance refuses to pay for it anymore." The disappointment in her mother's eyes grew and she reached to cup her sickly daughter's face.

A tightening and crushing sensation grew in Soo Jin's chest, her breath hitched continuously with each breath. She could feel her pulse rising, the walls of her heart scraping against her ribs. Her pupils dilated and she reached for her now panicking mother. She didn't know what to do, it's like the air was just ripped from her lungs and nothing was left. Her pulse began rising again, sending her blood through her body at an alarmingly fast rate, something it couldn't do much of because of the damage it had taken.

"Nurse! Nurse! We need a nurse over here!" Soo Min screamed into the hallway. Soo Jin clutched her chest in pain and looked around the room for anything to help. Nothing was of use until a nurse and doctor flew into the room and huddled over Soo Jin.

"Give me twenty milli's of albuterol!" The doctor yelled at the nurse who ran out to get what he ordered. As she exited, Hansol ran in panting. He heard Soo Jin's mother call and ran as fast as he could. He found Soo Jin in the bed and immediately grew worried.

"Soo Jin? What's wrong? Are you okay?" Soo Jin didn't respond, just gasped for air. Judging by the machines she was connected to, her heart rate had reached over
one-hundred-eighty beats per minute and the doctor panicked, sending Hansol and her mother into the hallway. The two huddled near each other, expecting the worse. Hansol's thoughts immediately went to the past. He was so horrible to Soo Jin in the past.

And now here she was, getting yet another thing she didn't deserve. Both Hansol and Soo Min sat outside in the hallway for over an hour, waiting for news. The doctor, Min Woo, came out and sighed.

"He's alright. Just a small panic attack that worsened due to her heart problem. You are okay to see her now." Hansol jumped and ran into the room, waiting for Soo Jin's mother to come in as well. She layed a hand on the worried girl's shoulder and smiled.

"Can I have a moment alone with her?" Hansol, despite not wanting to, stepped out into the hall, standing at the door. He heard small whimpers from beyond the door and couldn't help but press his ear to it to hear more.

Although the voices were muffled, Hansol could make out nearly all that was said.

"We don't have enough money to pay for everything. I'm truly sorry."

Soo Jin's cries could be heard and Hansol's heart jumped into his throat, "But what is going to happen to me?"

Soo Min sighed again and in a comforting voice, she said, "I don't know." Wow, that's comforting, Hansol thought.

Before he knew it, Soo Min was opening the door and leaving, wiping tears as she walked down the hall. Hansol instantly retreated into the room, closing the door. Soo Jin wiped the last few tears staining her cheeks, and smiled weakly.

"Hey." She mumbled, sniffling a few times. Hansol nodded and sat at the foot of the stuffed bed. How on earth does Soo Jin sleep on this rock?

"Can I do anything for you? Do you need anything?" The simple care that Hansol had been putting forward made Hansol feel amazing. She could never imagine that she would be in this position, especially with Hansol by her side.

"I'm hungry." As if on cue, Soo Jin's stomach growled horrendously and Hansol giggled. Hansol sprung onto his feet and found the cafeteria on the third floor after looking around for several minutes. He grabbed a small Caesar salad and a fruit juice, figuring Soo Jin would like it and purchased it. When the total showed on a small screen, Hansol hissed and handed over the money. Even for someone who was rich, the food was expensive for a hospital.

Hansol arrived in Soo Jin's room again and placed the food and his tray with a smile. Soo Jin gasped at the gesture and thanked him, offering him money to pay him back. Hansol shook his head.

"I've got it. Don't worry about it." Even if he was rich, Soo Jin still felt bad about him spending his money on someone who was bound to die in the next few weeks.

"So I'm guessing you heard, huh?" Soo Jin asked after a few moments of silence interrupted by the crunch of romaine lettuce leaves.

"Yeah, I heard. And I'm going to help." Hansol admited after cupping the girl's face in his hands. Soo Jin shook her head. He could never accept that. Her
treatment cost so much money. She once heard her mother on the phone talking to the insurance broker and she mentioned something about them paying nearly eighty grand per year. It made Soo Jin sick to her stomach picturing Hansol spending his parent's money doing the same.

"N-no. I can't accept that. It's too much." Hansol chuckled at Soo Jin's genuineness. He figured Soo Jin would refuse the money. Hansol hushed Soo Jin and pushes her food closer to her.

"I've got to go. I'll see you tomorrow." He said as he left, grabbing his coat on the way out. Soo Jin couldn't help but not want him to leave, especially after Hansol
hinting at her wanting to help pay for her treatment. But before she can object, Hansol gone.

By the time Soo Jin finished her food, Hansol was back home in front of his parents who looked at him curiously.

"I need to ask you a favour." Hansol told them, pausing for a while.

"Well go on then!" His father ordered.

"I need you to pay for Soo Jin's treatment."
