Life Support

The next day, Hansol was assigned to Soo Jin  once again. He tended to her needs, despite not wanting to do so. The last thing he wanted to do was care for some girl with a ed up heart. He noticed Soo Jin staring at him quite often and ignored her. The last thing he needed was to get in trouble for flipping out on Soo Jin for looking at him. Halfway through the day, Soo Jin was given medication by Hansol.

The pill was oval shaped and a teal color. Soo Jin looked at it curiously before downing it with a glass of water that Hansol had given her. It tasted similar to the liquid she had to drink for the MRI, but not as bad. Almost instantly, her stomach began to growl and the room began to spin. Soo Jin pulled at her hair with her hands and fell off her bed, crawling to the bathroom.

Hansol looked at the horrible sight, the teen in front of him unable to even make it to the bathroom to vomit. His eyebrows furrowed at Soo Jin and he crossed his arms. He debated on helping, but he wasn't 'the help' so he didn't even flinch.

Soo Jin finally reached the bathroom and emptied her stomach ferociously into the porcelain toilet. The green and yellow liquid burned and she cringed at her state. She was disgusting. She just threw up all she had in her stomach, which wasn't much to begin with.

All she had during her twenty-four hours at the hospital was a cup of tea and two slices of toast. After throwing up, the effects of the medicine slightly wore off but not enough. As she stood up to make her way back to her bed, her vision went black and she wasn't able to see in front of her. She tripped on the door frame and her limp body began to fall to the floor.

To Soo Jin, it felt like time had slowed down and Hansol, almost inhumanly fast, caught Soo Jin in his arms, pulling her to his chest mere inches before Soo Jin would have hit her head. Soo Jin opened her eyes and looked at Hansol and gasped. She moved from his hold and crawled onto her bed and under the covers. Soo Jin looked around to find Hansol. Before the fiasco had gone down, Min Woo had left to let Hansol take care of Soo Jin. He'd all on his own with a pathetic looking Soo Jin.

Hansol  didn't leave the room for the rest of the day. If he had to use the restroom, he used the one in the room. On his lunch break, he ordered food from Soo Jin's menu along with ordering the latter's as well.

Soo Jin couldn't help but notice the rude boy's random lack of absence and mustered up the courage to talk to him.

"Why haven't you left my room at all today?" Soo Jin asked quietly, almost inaudibly. She hadn't really talked to Hansol much in the last few years. It had mostly been Hansol talking down to her, making fun of her mother's money situation and her tattered clothing.

Hansol looked at Soo Jin as he chewed his dinner, orange chicken with asparagus, and swallowed, debating on how to answer the question.

"I don't kn-" he'd cut off by a knock at the door and Min Woo entered again.

"Sorry about leaving earlier, emergency in the E.R. But, anyways how are you feeling today?" Min Woo smiled towards a somber looking Soo Jin and walked over to her, checking her heart rate. He heard an irregular heartbeat and the struggle her heart was enduring.

Min Woo cooed softly and easily took a needle out from Soo Jin's arm that gave her essential vitamins and fluids. Soo Jin hissed at the pinching in her forearm and rubbed it after it was gone. Min Woo tapped his hand, signaling not do that and held another needle in his hand.

"Oh great," Soo Jin cried, shutting her eyes closed, waiting for the sting of the needle. Min Woo took Soo Jin's arm and held it so the underside of her appendage was showing.

"Hansol, come. You should watch this for observation." Hansol did as he was told and watched, but he couldn't help but notice small, white slashes in the sick girl's wrists. A churning in his stomach was beginning to present itself, and he clutched it. Soo Jin cuts herself.

After the IV was out and Min Woo had left to go to his next patient, Hansol took a seat close to Soo Jin's bed, where he could really see her face.

"What are on your wrists?" Hansol asked calmly. He approached the topic rather harshly, but he didn't know any other way. Soo Jin instantly pushed into the headboard of her bed and closed her eyes. No. Hansol could not know about this. It would show that she was weak and she didn't want him knowing.  Hansol placed a hand on Soo Jin's bony shoulder and asked again, this time sternly. Maybe being stern will get her attention. It did when her eyes popped open and she opened to speak.

"They're cuts, okay. I- I cut." Soo jin stuttered, completely embarrassed. She kept the cuts hidden really well, even through other doctors. She would apply concealer to the cuts and they wouldn't be noticeable to anybody who didn't know they were there before.

Hansol felt something in him, something he hadn't felt before. Sympathy? Maybe.

"Why?" Was all Hansol could ask, thinking of any reason why someone would harm themselves purposefully.

"Life. Living has been miserable. Living has been tortuous for me." Soo Jin realized her statement had two meanings: one relating to money, and the other relating to health.

Hansol gulped loudly, clearly wounded by the statement.  She was talking about him. She should just have said it out loud and open. But he never thought it would be because of him. Sure, he messed with Soo Jin every once in a while, but he didn't think it would lead her to hurt herself. Then he remembered how skinny she looked the last days at school before hse disappeared.

"Soo Jin, did you starve yourself too?" He didn't like asking these questions. He felt numb. He didn't know what to feel or what to do.

"Yep," Soo Jin reply almost confidently, "I thought that maybe if I was skinny, you'd like me like I liked y—I need to stop!" Hansol gasped.

"You like me?" Soo Jin nodded, unwillingly. There was no going back now. He already knew now. Hansol's stomach felt like he was going to be sick. All this time, he was hurting someone who harboured a liking towards him.

"So...how long have they given you?" Hansol asked Soo Jin, trying to escape the self-loathing thoughts beginning to penetrate his egocentric mind.

"5 months," Soo Jin scoffed, "crazy, huh?" That was it for Hansol. Soo Jin, only seventeen-years-old, won't live to have graduate, won't live travel the world, won't live to be someone. Hansol cursed himself. If he had put his personality aside and just been a nice person, maybe things would have been different.

Over the intercom, Min Woo called Hansol to the front desk, "Hansol to the front desk, Hansol to the front desk." Hansol looked to the door, not wanting to leave Soo Jin. He needed to be here.

"Soo Jin," Hansol said as he took Soo Jin's hand in his, noticing how cold it was, "I don't do this often but I'm sorry." He left it at that and exited the room, leaving Soo Jin shocked at the change she had just experienced.

Hansol, extraordinaire, just said he was sorry. A smile crossed Soo Jin's face as she closed her eyes to sleep.

It had been a long day.
