Life Support

Hansol slept well last night after leaving the hospital. Soo Jin, on the other hand, tossed and turned throughout the sleeping hours, thinking about the day's prior events. Had that all really happen? Was Hansol actually sympathetic. She chuckled at the thought and rolled over to see the sun peaking through the curtains. Morning approached way too quickly, but she couldn't help but feel excited that she would see Hansol again.

The drive to the hospital was full of traffic. The main highway Hansol took was backed up from an accident and he could feel himself getting redder from anger by the second. A small bouquet of carnations sat in a glass vase full of water in the seat just beside him. Hansol had to use one hand to hold it and one to hold the steering wheel, all the while nearly driving off the road into a ditch.

He woke up extra early to drive to the local florist to pick up some flowers for Soo Jin. That was what people did for sick people, right? He spent a while scanning over the variety of flowers, finally picking out a fresh bundle of the pink and white carnations.

There was a feeling in Hansol's stomach that Soo Jin wouldn't like the flowers and maybe he should have gotten different ones. But he shook the thought out of his head since he saw the hospital peaking through the horizon. Even from far away, the massive building seemed daunting

He entered the lobby and made his way to the elevator, pressing the button to the floor in which Soo Jin was staying at. It began its trek up to the floor and the closer it got, Hansol's nervousness got worse. He had been so cruel to Soo Jin and he couldn't help but feel there wasn't a way to fix it. He spent the few hours after he had arrived home figuring out ways to make Soo Jin's few months as best as possible and he felt nearly proud but a bit scared of his rapid change.

The elevator clanked to the floor and the doors opened, revealing nurses and doctors scramming to prepare for the day. Hansol ignored them all and headed to Soo Jin's room, his top priority right now. The door was closed so Hansol grasped the handle with his free hands and twisted the handle.

The scene revealed a sleeping Soo Jin in her bed, her chest rising slowly. That night, Soo Jin fell asleep somewhere around three o'clock in the morning and had been asleep ever since. Soft snores could be heard from the corner of the room and Hansol chuckled, closing the door behind him and walking over to Soo Jin.

Hansol decided to put the flowers on the bedside table and sat on the chair next to the bed. He couldn't help but stare at the girl in front of him. He never noticed how beautiful she really was. Even though she wasquite skinny, her eyes sunken in, and with her skin getting dull each day, there was an odd sense of beauty buried in her.

The moment Hansol situated himself in the chair, Soo Jin's eyes fluttered open and she smiled when her eyes fell on Hansol. The latter was shocked at the flash of her pearly whites.

"Shouldn't she be disgusted with me? At least hate me?" Hansol asked himself, thinking maybe Soo Jin had suffered a brain damage as well. But she hadn't. Soo Jin's eyes roamed around the room until they settled on the bright, coloured carnations and she reachd to grab them, sticking her face in the blossomed flowers and sniffing lightly. The floral scent warmed her soul and she layed back.

"Did you get these for me?" Soo Jin asked weakly, astonishment in her brown eyes.

Hansol nodded, and kneeled next to Soo Jin's bed, "Do you like them? I didn't know which ones to pick. There were so many." Flustered, Soo Jin chuckled and assured him they were okay. She didn't expect anything from Hansol, let alone flowers and his presence. She was absolutely shocked. The boy she knew in Primary school was beginning to peek through the thick skin Hansol had grown throughout the years.

« Seven Years Earlier »

Primary school was a hard time for Soo Jin. She was constantly bullied by all of the bigger kids, all of them calling her "ugly" and "fat". Every day was like that for as long as Soo Jin could remember. But one day, on the blacktop during recess, that changed.

Three boys and two boys stood above her, Sun-Hee, Iseul, Sam, Min-Jae and Sooyoun. The two boys pushed her to the ground, ripped off her glasses, and the girls began slapping, punching and pulled her hair.

She cried for help but everyone stood around the fight cheering "FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT!" each time the word was chanted, each girl landed another hit into Soo Jin. Bile rose into , her body trying to find a way to rid itself of the pain. Her stomach twisted and pulled, and she cried out in pain.

"Ple-e-e-ase sto-o-p!" Her words hitched as they came out. The girls above her just laughed as they hit her more and more until a figure rushed at them, pushing them to the ground. The two boys and the stranger rolled around on the ground in groans and thumps from punches.

"Let's go!" Min-Jae screamed and the five disappeared. The mystery boy stood up from the ground and wiped himself off, turning to walk to Soo Jin who still laid on the ground. His eyes were a warm brown and his pale skin stood out. Soo Jin was surprised how stocky the boy was considering he couldn't be any older than eleven. Soo Jin recognized him but couldn't put a name to the face until he introduced himself.

"Hey," he reached out a sweaty hand, "I'm Hansol. Are you okay?"

« Present Day »

Soo Jin couldn't help but believe there was still a hint of that boy on the playground underneath the hard exterior that was Hansol's wealth. She remembered the day Hansol's mother married a rich tycoon and the next day, he was wearing Coutour and designer clothing and didn't pay Soo Jin the slightest bit of acknowledgment. It hurt Soo Jin. The one person who showed her the  slightest hint of care left her in the dust. But now, here this boy was, kneeling next to her with a bouquet of flowers behind him. Could it be possible that the boy who caught her feelings could be turning back?

Soo Jin couldn't help but think it was to good to be true. Hansol knew it was her last few months and was probably just trying to up the venomous words he usually spat at her.

Hansol stared as Soo Jin was in deep thought. The two had been sitting together for a few moments now and Hansol coughed to break the silence, snapping Soo Jin out of her daydream.

"I hope you like them. Is there anything I can do for you?" Hansol asked sincerely. He couldn't help but want to help Soo Jin. There was nothing worse than knowing you hurt someone repeatedly and not at least try to make it better.

Soo Jin nodded, placing her hand on Hansol's and smiling. Her warm touch was welcoming and he couldn't fight off the recurring feelings he had for years.

He loved her.
