Life Support

Soo Jin and her mother arrived at the hospital after packing up her belongings. Soo Min cried softly the entire time, picking up the dresses, shirts and jeans Soo Jin had left on her bedroom floor. She found a pair of socks from when Soo Jin was a little girl, and immediately broke down. She buried her face in her hands and fell to floor in a puddle of mascara-stained tears. Soo Jin immediately cared for her mother, dropping to her knees and caressing her in her lap.

"Mama don't worry. Okay?" Soo Jin cupped her warm cheeks in her soft palms, "they're going to take great care of me. I'll be okay." Soo Jin couldn't help but cry along with her mother. She could never keep her composure when she saw her mother weak. She had gone through so much ever since her father, Kyung, died. She always put her daughter before herself, something Soo Jin admired deeply. Her mother was role model, her best friend and when your best friend cried, you couldn't help but cry too.

Soo Jin took the socks away from her, grasping them in her weak hands, and placed them in the closet. They spend the rest of their time at home eating their last meal together in their house and packing the rest of Soo Jin's things. Soo Min had to load her bags into the car due to the fact that Soo Jin couldn't do any lifting.

Anything could risk an early cardiac arrest. But Soo Min was never the one to be dependent. She grew up with few friends and many bullies, so being independent was encoded in her DNA.

After her mother had unloaded the bag from the boot, they waited in the waiting room. Soo Jin took in the sight of the sick people, some with just a cough and some rolling in wheelchairs in horrific pain. She couldn't stand the sight of the pain they were going through because that would be her very soon.

Although she went through body-wrenching pain daily, seeing others in that same pain hurt her. She would take all of their pain and give it to herself so they didn't feel anything, even if they were complete strangers.

The two went up to the help desk and a small nurse wheeled over a wheelchair.

"Hello," she greeted cheerfully, smiling brightly towards Soo Jin, "can I help you?" She had a certain friendliness about her that Soo Jin couldn't help but reciprocate. With a bright smile, brighter than she'd smiled in quite some time, she responded with her name.

The nurse who, by her name tag, was named Nurse Im typed on the computer, clicking a few times before turning back to Soo Jin and asking for her hand.

She raised it to her and she wrapped a white wristband, the ones that were nearly impossible to get off, with her name, birthday, illness, and a barcode on it. She then handed Soo Jin a map where she circled her permanent room in the children's wing. She seemed almost too happy, Soo Jin thought. She probably knew. Hell, anybody would know by looking at her. She looked sick, so why wouldn't anyone assume she was?

"You can go right up, love." She smiled at her after clasping the plastic bracelet around her frail wrist and pointing in the direction they needed to go. The hospital was full of rushing doctors caring to their patients and Soo Jin couldn't help but feel at ease, knowing her stay here was going to be comfortable with the best doctors in the country at her side, within her mother's price range of course.

The mother and daughter duo took a large, stainless steel elevator to the fifteenth floor to the children's ward. Although Soo Jin was seventeen, she wasn't quite old enough to be put in the regular portion of the hospital so he was with the children, something she was quite happy about. She loved children.

She and her mother passed by a few rooms on their way to her quarters, seeing a few children being cared for, some playing games out in the center of the hallway, and some sleeping in their beds. It was almost too overwhelming seeing the large amount of kids here.

They didn't deserve to be sick. Soo Jin didn't deserve to be sick. She had done nothing but good. At least, she had tried to be good for the most part.

They arrived at her room, which was a larger room than all of the others and had a large window with beige curtains, a personal bathroom, and a television across from the bed on the wall. It reminded her of a hotel room, rather than a hospital room, but Soo Jin didn't complain. It was a death room.

Doctors reserved the best rooms for those that were certain for death, and Soo Jin accepted that fact. Her mother didn't realize, though. She just set down her  bags and sat, waiting for a doctor. Twenty minutes later, Dr. Boo walked in with his chipper demeanor. His lab coat swayed as he walked and he kneeled down next to Soo Jin's bed where the latter now sat. He held out his hand, and Soo Jin took it in her own. Dr. Boo noticed her cold touch and wrote that down on his clipboard.

"Hello, Soo Jin. I'm Dr. Boo, but you can call me Dr. Min Woo or Min Woo." The smile Min Woo had on was contagious, and Soo Jin smiled shyly. That was a goal of Min Woo's. A hospital was depressing enough, so why not bring happiness into everyone's life?

After Min Woo asked Soo Jin a bunch of diagnostic questions and took his vitals, he had Min Woo sign some papers and then left them to themselves. Although she was overwhelmed, Soo Jin felt safer than she had in a while and for some reason, a glimmer of hope was visible. She just hoped it stayed that way.

Across the wing,  Dr. Boo handed the papers Soo Min just signed to Hansol who was flushed red from the hard day of work. Dr. Boo noticed and chuckled, "You'll get used to it." Hansol handed the papers to the secretary and followed Min Woo who was now making his way down the hall.

"So, Hansol, I need to you to take care of a new patient for a while. Visiting hours ended a few minutes ago, so her mother should be leaving about now." Dr. Boo told Hansol. As if on cue, Soo Jin's mother passed the two, making her way to the elevator. Tears rolled down her face and Hansol ignored her, eyes rolling. There was no need to be crying all the time.

"Room 305, and don't be an ." Dr. Boo groaned, walking away. Hansol really didn't feel like dealing with anyone, after having to deal with three screaming children, one after another but he followed Dr. Boo's orders and found room 305.

The room was much larger than the rest and the window were open, letting in a warm spring breeze. Hansol found a clipboard on the bedside table and checked for what the patient needed.

The patient was currently unpacking her things with her back to him.

She was a heart failure patient who was under constant care and monitoring starting today. Hansol quickly glanced over everything, then looked up to see the girl had found herself in her bed under the covers. Her eyes were sunken in, cheekbones stuck out horribly, and there was little fat on her body.

"Do you need anything?" Hansol asked her, with a fake smile like always. Soo Jin immediately gasps.

She recognized that voice. She remembers that voice asking her where she got her clothes, mocking her in the halls, and making her school experience a living nightmare for years. Grabbing her glasses she had taken off to wash her face earlier, she placed them on and Hansol's face came into clear view.

"H-Hansol?" Soo Jin asked him, Hansol cocked his head in confusion.

"How do you know my name?" Hansol didn't recognize the girl. He didn't know anyone who was sick, and definitely didn't know anyone who had such atrocious wardrobe taste. That was besides Su Soo Jin. But he hadn't seen her in months.

"It's Soo Jin... Su Soo Jin. We were in a couple of classes together" What? Hansol was baffled as he walked closer to the girl in the bed. So it was. He recognized her immediately. She was the girl from school who didn't fit in and had no money. Hansol chuckled silently and realized why she hadn't been to school for months. She was sick.

"Hey," Hansol uttered, not really knowing what to say, "need anything?" It had been quite some time since Hansol had asked anybody if they needed anything, it was usually the other way around.

Hansol helped Soo Jin into the bathroom, her tv, changed her bed sheets when Soo Jin noticed they were fairly itchy against her chapped skin, and many other monotonous tasks throughout the day.

After some time, Hansol looked at the girl in bed, feeling no sympathy. In reality, why would he care when it was some punishment his parents had dished out as a way of 'learning to appreciate what you have'.

When the clock hits seven thirty, Hansol books out of the room, leaving Soo Jin to herself. Soo Jin couldn't help but feel saddened by Hansol's lack of emotions. But then again, why would he care when he had better things to live for?
