I Like You

“He’s looking at you again” 

Out of complete instinct the pink haired senior turned her head to catch a pair of brown eyes fixed on her.    Min watched him put on his headphones on his ears and shift his lollipop to his other cheek, then rolled eyes her eyes when she saw his eyes narrow a bit. She turned back to her group of friends, who were all, with the exception of her best friend Amber, staring at him with hearts in their eyes. Amber who had whispered to her that Kai had been looking her way, was leaning on the gates of the school, scrolling down her playlist with a small smile on her face. Knowing the reason that she was smiling, Min rolled her eyes again and grabbed her duffle bag from the ground. “I think I’m going to head home. I forgot I have homework to catch up on” Her friends finally broke out of the Kai’s spell and looked at her, “Oh okay. We’ll tell the rest of the team you headed out” “All right, thanks” “I’m going to head out too, mind giving me a ride?” Amber asked, sticking her iPod in her pocket.   “Yeah, sure” Amber grinned and looped her arm through Min’s as they waved to their friends.   “See you guys later!”   “Bye”   “See ya!”    Min and Amber stopped in the tracks when they almost ran into someone who was running out of the school gates. “Oops, sorry” Taemin apologized, briefly glancing at Min, before running past them towards Kai’s car. Amber nudged Min’s side to get her attention, but Min just continued to walk to her car.    “Are we not going to talk about Kai?”    “No”    “Why not? He likes you!”    Min huffed, “You mean hate?” “No, I mean like” “Do I have to remind you what he told me the other day?” “I didn’t say he was smart” “He’s a jerk and I should completely forget about him” “Okay, so he shouldn’t have said those things to you, but he was only defending his friend. He was wrong, yes, but you should give him another chance. Maybe talk to him about it. I mean, you still like him. Maybe talking to him and clearing up misunderstandings could be a good thing” “Of course it can, but I’m not going up to him. He owes me an apology” It was Amber’s turn to roll her eyes, but didn’t say anything. Min was stubborn, but Amber had to agree with her. Kai was the one that should apologize first, but the problem was, would he?   Back at the front of the school, Kai had already driven off with Taemin in the passenger seat. He glanced at Min and Amber walking on the sidewalk, but then turned back to the road when caught Taemin turning his head full way to watch them. “Thanks for the ride by the way” Taemin said after the girls were completely out of sight. “Sure” Kai answered, pressing on the breaks when they got to a red light. “It kind of living far from school” Kai nodded mindlessly not noticing how Taemin’s voice lowered a bit. “Kind of sick of waking up extra earlier than everyone else to be honest. I think I’m going to transfer” At this Kai’s attention was caught and he turned to his best friend. “What?” Taemin shrugged, “I mean, it’s such a big hassle honestly and let’s not talk about the gas money” “Wait, you’re seriously thinking of transferring?” Kai and Taemin both glanced at the rearview mirror after the car behind them honked. Kai noticed the green light and pressed down on the accelerator. “Not thinking. I am transferring” Taemin responded when they reached another red light. “What?” Kai shook his head, “Are you serious?” “Yeah” “Taemin, you wanted to get into the school so badly for the Art’s Program, why do you suddenly want to transfer?” “I told you” Immediately the image of Min flashed in his head and his hands tightened around the steering wheel. “Ah huh and a certain pink haired senior isn’t the reason?” At this, Taemin laughed. “Geez, Kai. You seriously think I would change schools because a girl rejected me? You think my confidence was shattered that badly?” Kai didn’t respond and just continued to drive.    Taemin didn't talk about the transfer again and instead changed the subject to some funny story his History teacher had told the class that day. When they arrived at Taemin’s house, he told Kai not to worry about it and that he would text him his transfer later, but that didn’t really make Kai feel better. Taemin was his oldest friend and they always had each other’s back for whatever reason. It pissed him off that once again his best friends heart had been broken by girls who liked to play with guys’ emotions. It pissed him off even more that at one point he had a huge crush on one of the culprits.    ☃   “Thanks Min!”    “You’re welcome”    Min smiled at the Freshman girls who were now opening the box of chocolates that she had just given them with so much enthusiasm. She turned around and scanned the Dance Room they practiced in and frowned when she realized that one of the last two boxes of chocolates was for Kai. She watched him pack his bag while debating with herself whether to go up to him or not. After cowering out, she decided to look for Taemin instead, but then remembered that it would probably be awkward if she gave him the boxes.    About 2 weeks ago, Kai, Min and Taemin were friends, good friends. Taemin was new to the school and therefore also new to the Dance Team. As the co-captain of the team, she offered to help Taemin catch up with the rest of the class and it was going great. He was a funny guy, sweet and likable, but maybe she had made the mistake of being too friendly with him. He ended up confessing to her and it honestly did catch her off guard. Min had thought that she had made it obvious that she liked Kai, since she found any way to spend time with him and clearly everyone else had seen it as well, but of course, not Kai. Amber had mentioned that Min upped her energy and her smile brightened 20 times more when she talked to Kai. She was what she never thought she would be, an awkward, nervous, and typical girl with a crush. She had told Amber she was too cool for that, but in the end, Kai had brought out that side of her and honestly, she thought maybe Kai had the same feelings since he pretty much did the same, according to Amber. It must’ve been a defense mechanism. She told herself that it couldn’t be true to spare herself a broken heart, but still she held some hope. So it came to a surprise when it was Taemin who had ended up confessing to her.    One thing Min couldn't change even when dealing with romance, was that she could be both kindly honest and brutally blunt. She rejected him because she had no feelings for him and answered him honestly when he asked if she liked Kai. She felt horrible, but it would be worse if she had lied to him. She didn’t regret it, but the bad thing that came with that rejection was that Kai confronted her about it and accused her of playing with Taemin’s heart.
