CHAPTER 2

[Café]


The tiny bell at the door rang as the two girls entered the café. Unlike the usual, it wasn’t that pack, so they decided to take the seats beside the see-through wall. The ever ‘gentleman’ teen led her new acquaintance to the chairs.

 

“Thank you~” Jessica sweetly beamed as Yoona pulled the chair back; giving just the right amount of space for her to squeeze in.

The doe-eyes smiled in response. She took her seat seconds later. “See anything you like?” She flipped the pages of the menu.

“Hm…” Jessica let her point finger scrolling down the written meals. “Let’s just start with some lemonade. It’s been awfully hot today!” The blonde fanned herself.

“You’re not hungry?”

“Not so much. Maybe I’ll order later.”

“Okay then.” Yoona looked up to search for a waiter. As soon as she found a very familiar face, she widely grinned and waved frantically. “Unnie!!”

The older girl smiled back and went to the table. “Hey kid! Haven’t seen you around in a while.”

“Yeah, I’ve been busy.”

Hyoyeon chuckled. She found it very funny for the most available person she knew to have that kind of answer. “With what?!”

“School…” Yoona kept her poker face. “…stuff…”

The simple words made Jessica chuckled to herself and the soft sound grabbed Hyoyeon’s attention. The older girl turned to the other seat. “You’re not from here.”

Jessica was a bit taken aback by the sudden, but yet true, statement. “I…”

“Shoot! I totally forgot. Unnie, this is Jessica. Jessica, Hyoyeon unnie.” Yoona’s hand went back and forth the two girls.

“Aah, now I remember. You’re THE new girl. People have been talking about you.” Hyoyeon noticed the surprised look on the blondie. Sensing that her earlier words could be easily mistaken, she quickly recovered. “In a good way, of course.”

“They have?” Jessica quietly mumbled.

Yoona instantly noted how uncomfortable Jessica became after learning the information. “Unnie, I don’t think Jessica needs to know how creepy the people here can be.” She tried to hint her older friend to drop the matter.

Hyoyeon recognized the ‘warning’ tone too well. “Of course. So, what can I get you two?” She took out a pad and a pen from her pocket.

“Two lemonades, please.” Yoona then handed the menu.

“That’s it?” Hyoyeon couldn’t help but widened her eyes at the ‘unusual’ order.

“Yeah.”

“You’re not eating?”

“I’m not that hungry.” Jessica simply answered.

Oh, I believe YOU. I’m talking about her.” The waitress turned to the doe-eyes. “YOU’RE not eating?!” She smirked.

“We’ll order something later.” Yoona said in between her gritted teeth. Showing how big-eater she is to someone she barely knew was the last thing on her list.

Hyoyeon just grinned at her shikshin younger friend. “Whatever you say~”

“What was that all about?” Jessica was curious as she eyed the waitress leaving their table.

“Oh that?” Yoona let out a nervous laugh. “Don’t mind her. She’s crazy sometimes.” She cleared , hoping that her appetite issue wouldn’t be brought up ever again. “So, how do you like the town so far?”

“Except for the fact that the people are stalking me, yeah, I like it very much.”

The doe-eyed teen giggled. “I wouldn’t worry about it so much. You’re the new face. It is bound to happen. This is a small town after all. Trust me, give them a few more days and they’ll forget all about you in no time.”

“I’ll hold on to that.” Jessica chortled. “By the way, thank you for showing me around. I really appreciate it, Yoona.” She flashed her most charming smile.

Yoona waited for the waiter who just served their drinks to leave before giving her response. “Don’t mention it. I have nothing to do anyway.”

Jessica took a sip of her lemonade. “I find it really weird though.”

“What is?”

“I’m not a very sociable person but–“

“Yes, I can see that.” Yoona butted in as she flared a mischievous smirk.

Jessica scowled at the sudden comment. “What’s that supposed to mean?”

“Well, I’ve been watching you at school. You can be REALLY cold to people sometimes, Jessica. Your icy stares…” Yoona faked a shivering gesture. “Scary~”

The blonde girl beamed. However, she wasn’t really sure what the smile was for though. Was it because of Yoona’s cute act earlier, or for the fact that she’d been an interest for one of the hottest girls in school. “Watching me, huh?”

Yoona slightly widened her eyes as if she had been caught doing something inappropriate. “No no no! I didn’t mean it that way. I mean not in the creepy like ‘I’m watching you’ sort of way, I just…I’ve noticed you.”

“I see.” Jessica tried to hide her giddy grin. “Anyway, what I was about to say earlier is that mingling around is not really my thing. But with you…” She suddenly felt nervous. “It’s different. You make me so comfortable to the point that I feel like we’ve been friends for years.”

Yoona went silent for a moment. She had a look on her face; a look where it seemed like she’s about to say something profound and meaningful. “It must be because of my exceptional beauty~”

“Yah!” Jessica playfully slapped the latter’s arm. “You’re so full of yourself. Now I know why Seohyun keep saying that she wants to kill you.”

Yoona giggled. “I’m just kidding. Well, it’s good to hear that. I’m glad that I’m not one of the people who you would shot your chilling stares to.”

Jessica shyly glanced straight into the doe eyes across her seat. “Me too~” She whispered.

“I can’t believe you cried.” Giggles were heard as the two girls strolled along the block.

“Yah, she died in the end!”

Yuri raised a brow. “She’s a dog.”

“That died because she was trying to save her owner!” Seohyun exclaimed.

“Please remind me not to watch another gloomy-animal-themed movie with you ever again. The people sitting around us glanced so much; I swear I feel like I could actually die of embarrassment.”

Seohyun elbowed her best friend. “Eesh, you’re so insensitive!”

Yuri responded the remark with a smile. Suddenly, something caught her eyes. “Hey, is that…”

The puffed cheeks was startled when Yuri unexpectedly stopped. She trailed her friend’s gaze. Her eyes immediately enlarged upon looking at the cheerful-looking couple behind the café’s glass wall. “Yoona? With Jessica?!”

Yuri couldn’t help but felt a hint of envy watching the duo kidding around with each other, especially when her crush showered her best friend with slight touches every now and then. “I didn’t know that they are close.”

“They are?!” Seohyun unconsciously raised her voice.

“Well, look at them.” Yuri pointed to, by then the laughing girls. “They seem close.”

Seohyun noticed the disappointment in Yuri’s voice. Somehow it made her feel uneasy inside as she recognized the familiar tone. Little that she knew, she was actually having it as well. Jealousy~

 

“Come on, let’s go and say hi.” Yuri was dragging Seohyun when a hand grabbed her wrist.

“But the library will be closed in half an hour. We won’t make it in time.”

The tanned girl secretly sighed. She totally forgot about their plan. “Right. Sorry. Let’s go then.” Yuri went on walking with such heavy steps.

Seohyun on the other hand took a final glance at the two grinning girls inside the café before followed her best friend from behind.

Jessica bit her lip, contemplating whether or not to ask over what had been bugging her since she learned about one of the doe-eyes’ self-facts. “Hey Yoona?”

“Yeah?”

“Can I ask you something personal?”

Yoona finished her remaining drinks in one go. “Do I need to answer it?”

“Only if you want to.”

“Fair enough.” Yoona lightly nodded. “Ask away~”

Jessica leaned forward for a bit. “Why are you still single?”

Yoona couldn’t help but to let out a soft chuckle. “What is it to you?”
