How We First Met

Runaway Groom

Jessica stared at the diamond engagement ring.  She never had the heart to throw it away.  She sat on the office chair to her desk as she held the large engagement ring close to her face.  She remembered every single detail about the ring.  She remembered every single diamond's shape, color, and look.  She still remembered the first time she had seen the ring.  Jiyong was nervously proposing to her, but she was still clueless.  She even remembered what she was wearing.  She put the ring back in a little box and set that little box in a drawer.  She put her head down.  She didn't want to remember the past.

Jessica walked into Yoona's house and then slumped onto the couch.  Yoona and Seunghyun personally didn't mind her entering the house on her own, so they gave her an extra key.   As Jessica laid down on the couch, she heard distant screaming.  She quickly sat up and realized that Seunghyun and Yoona were having an argument.  Before she could make it to their bedroom, Seunghyun stormed out without saying a word to Jessica nor Yoona.  Jessica ran against the hallway wall as she saw Yoona took off one of her sneakers.  Yoona threw it against Seunghyun's back as he ignored it and left the house with his car keys.  Jessica looked at her sister and saw her looking miserable.  Her eyes were red from crying as her jaw clenched together in complete frustration.  Her hair was in a messy bun and she was wearing sweats and a t-shirt.  Yoona tried to wipe away her tears away as Jessica hugged her younger sister.

"Hun, what's wrong?  I never saw you guys fight like this," Jessica cooed.

The both of them walked into the living room where they both sat down on the sofa.  Yoona leaned her head against Jessica's shoulder as Jessica patted her head in comfort.  Yoona began to cry harder as she began to think about the whole situation.  She sniffled as Jessica grabbed a tissue from the side table and wiped her sister's tears away.

"I told him that I was going to work out today, and then he started to interrogate me.  He was claiming that I was cheating on him.   He thinks that I'm having an affair with Taecyeon.  Taecyeon is just a friend and just because he works out, it doesn't mean that I'm going to meet up with him in the gym.  I know I've kissed him for a drama that we did together three years ago, but this is just absurd!" Yoona bawled.

Jessica knew that it was only normal to fight once a couple was married.  Her eyes grew watery because she knew that she was in no position to give advice to her sister.  She wanted to be a good unnie, but she couldn't tell her about the problem when she didn't even experience a marriage.  Jessica's voice grew high pitched as she tried to clear .  Yoona noticed it and stopped her tears.  She looked at Jessica and gave her a curious expression.

"Unnie, what's wrong?  I'm here for you.  Tell me," Yoona assured her.

Jessica couldn't help but cry, "Sandara Park's groom is Jiyong."

"Jiyong?  Kwon Jiyong?  She told me that it was a Park Jiyong!" Yoona yelled.

"No, it's him.  If I knew that he was the groom, I would have never agreed to do the wedding for Sandara," Jessica teared.

Yoona hugged her sister, "I'm sorry, unnie!  It's all my fault.  I should have never recommended you to her.  I thought I was just helping out."

Jessica shook her head with the rejection of having it Yoona's fault.  It was no one's fault.  Yoona didn't want this to happen because she knew how much it would pain her sister.  After venting to each other for about an hour, Jessica left her sister's home to go to work.  As soon as she walked in the doors of her bridal planning shop, she was bombarded with questions.  Tiffany was stressed out with the weddings that Jessica had given to her.

"Jess, Ms. Lee wants pink roses, but she told yesterday that she wanted red roses!  She's so indecisive that it's annoying!" Tiffany exclaimed.

Jessica nodded, "Yeah, she is like that.  Just remind her that she ordered pink roses yesterday and that if she completely changes her mind, she would have to pay an extra fee because the florist has to start all over again with the bouquets."

"What would I do without you?" Tiffany smiled.

"Hm, you'd be pretty miserable!" Jessica joked.

As Jessica made her way into her office, she was stopped by Tiffany.  Tiffany's smile suddenly disappeared.  Since Tiffany was one of Jessica's closest friends, she knew about the situation that Jessica was in four years ago.  She knew that Jiyong had left her in the aisle.  Jessica didn't tell her that Jiyong and Sandara were her newest clients, but Tiffany already knew.

"Listen, I was looking over the planner and I saw that Kwon Jiyong is one of your clients," Tiffany stated.

Jessica nodded, "Yes.  Unfortunately, that is correct."

"Well, his fiance called an hour ago.  She wants to have dinner with you at seven o'clock tonight.  I think she's going to introduce you to Jiyong.  Does she even know that you two were together in the past?" Tiffany asked.

"You know what?  I don't care if she knows or not.  This is strictly for business and I don't have any ties with that anymore.  I don't want to get involved with him, and as soon as the wedding is over, I will not speak a single word to him again," Jessica replied.

Tiffany was taken aback with the anger in Jessica's eyes.  Her tone was as cold as a glacier as she clenched her jaw together.  Tiffany patted Jessica's back and gave her an encouraging smile.  She hated seeing Jessica so fired up.  Jessica was so cute and bubbly towards her friends, but when it came to someone she hardly knew or someone that she hated or disliked, it was completely terrifying.

"Tell her I'm not going tonight," Jessica finally said, "I'll be busy Christmas shopping with my family."

"Oh," Tiffany muttered.

Jessica was very professional and she had never turned down a meeting.  It surprised Tiffany that Jiyong was still making an impact on her even if he wasn't involved in her life.  Tiffany nodded and wrote on a sticky note that she'd call Sandara to tell her that Jessica could not attend the dinner.

Yoona and Jessica walked around the shopping mall as they searched for gifts for their friends.  Yoona wrapped herself in a knitted scarf as she wore a cotton sweater and a pair of black boots along with her jeans.  Jessica had a beanie on with her glasses and a long-sleeved dress along with heeled boots and leggings.  They were planning on buying gifts for Tiffany, Taeyeon, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny, Yuri, and Hyoyeon.  They had been their childhood friends and they used to be their neighbors until everyone moved out to go away to college.

Yoona and Jessica walked into a boutique and looked around the selection of clothing.  Jessica was looking for a gift for Tiffany while Yoona searched for a present for Seohyun.  Yoona pointed at a mannequin and smiled.  The dress was black, and it looked highly professional.  A salesman took it down for her as Yoona checked the size.  It was Seohyun's size.

"I think Seohyun will like this.  It's professional and it's classy," Yoona said.

"Yeah, I bet all of her students will end up falling for her," Jessica joked.

Yoona added with a laugh, "That's what she gets for choosing to teach high school students!  I bet she'll switch over to kindergarten in no time."

Jessica's laugh faded as she saw Seunghyun enter the store.  He and Yoona were still in an argument and Jessica was pretty sure that she was still angry at him.  She couldn't help but have a smile on her face as she saw Seunghyun holding a bouquet of some of Yoona's favorite flowers.  As soon as Yoona turned around, she threw a dirty glare to her husband.  She was infuriated by him.

Yoona began to walk away until her husband gently grabbed her wrist.  She turned around embarrassingly and looked around the store.  Fortunately, it wasn't filled with many people.  Yoona flicked Seunghyun's hand off of her tiny wrist and and rolled her eyes.

"Did you follow me to the mall because you thought that I would be cheating on you with a salesman?" Yoona asked mockingly.

"No," he answered, "I'm really sorry!"

"Yeah, I'm sorry that I married a man that won't even believe his own wife!" Yoona cried out.

Jessica stared at them.  She had seen them argue countless times, but they always made up.  Jessica figured that she needed to give them some time to make up.  She didn't want them to feel awkward as she watched them try to reconcile.

"You think that flowers will help me forgive you?  Flowers die!" Yoona yelled.

"Babe, I'm sorry...Daesung is very good at photography and he told me that those pictures of you and Taecyeon were photoshopped," he told her.

Yoona looked infuriated, "What pictures?  I bet you're believing those stalker fans of yours again!"

"Okay, this is a little too much for me.  I think I'm going to give you guys some time to talk things over," Jessica interrupted.

Jessica walked out of the small boutique and tried to find something to occupy herself with.  Her first thought was to find an ice cream shop, but she remembered that she had just eaten.  She walked amongst the crowd in the mall hoping that something would catch her eye.  She found a music shop that was empty.  There were no customers in there, but there was an old man that probably worked as the cashier.  When Jessica walked in, she bowed to the older man as the man gave a weak smile and a little nod.  Jessica walked through the shelves and saw various music sheets.  The walls were surrounded by various posters of musical artists from the Americas, Europe, and Asia.

The older man looked at Jessica and saw how amazed she was at the store.  He didn't know that she used to sing, but suddenly halted after the bad experience she went through.  Ever since she was left at the altar, she stopped singing.  She stopped playing the piano, and she even refused to hum to a song.

"Young woman, is there something you are looking for?" he asked.

Jessica turned around and observed the man.  His eyes were very small and they were even tinier when he smiled.  She had to guess that he was in his early forties.  Jessica bowed again to him and tried to think of an excuse to why she was there.

"Honestly, I went in here because I was amazed of the store.  I didn't have an initial reason to coming here.  I just wanted to look around," Jessica confessed.

"It's quite alright," he assured her, "My name is Yang Hyun Suk.  I own this shop.  Would you like me to help you find something interesting?"

"I really don't know what I'd be interested in," Jessica chuckled.

"I don't think my musical taste is similar to yours since mine is different from the people in your generation.  I have a young man that helps around in this store.  I think I'm going to call him to assist you.  You two look like you have similar interests.  By the way, what was your name?" he asked.

"My name is Jessica," she informed him.

Hyun Suk nodded and then emerged to the back door of the shop.  Jessica was left alone in the shop as she slowly walked through the aisles.  She laughed as she saw various CDs from Beyonce, Alicia Keys, and Mariah Carey.  She had been singing their songs since she was in high school.  Singing was a good memory for her, but because singing reminded her of Jiyong, she chose to ignore it.  She brushed her fingers through her long blonde hair as she pursed her lips.  She heard distant chattering, but she shunned it away from her thoughts.

As she picked up a CD, she began to read the track list to it.  She then felt someone tap her shoulder twice.  She figured that it was either Yang Hyun Suk or one of his assistants.  She turned around with a neutral expression.  Her hair swayed in the air as she twisted her body.  She remained emotionless as she faced the one who had tapped her shoulder.  She suddenly swallowed her saliva and took a short breath.  His face was entirely shocked.

"Sica!" Jiyong exclaimed.

Jessica put the CD back on the rack neatly and faced him again.  She looked down at her boots and then looked up.  Not even one inch of her face showed a bit of emotion.  Her eyes darted towards him.  Her glare was so icy that goosebumps emerged on the surface of his skin.

Without even thinking, she gave him the hardest slap she was capable of.  His left cheek was hit by her right hand.  His cheek began to turn pink at the impact of the blow.  Jessica secured her bag on her shoulder as she took out her black leather gloves and put them on.

"It's not Sica.  It's Jessica Jung," she corrected him before she left.

The cold night air bit through his trench coat.  Jiyong shivered as his teeth chattered together.  He took out his phone and checked the time.  It was 11:37 p.m.  As a tall figure approached him, a smile appeared on his flawless face.  Jiyong stuck his hands out of his pockets and hugged the tall man.  They were outside a cafe.

"Hyung, I'm glad that you could make it," Jiyong said happily.

Seunghyun looked around uncomfortably.  He should have not been there.  Yoona knew that he was called in last minute to look over a script, but she was expecting him home by midnight.  Seunghyun quickly nodded as he fixed the hat on his head.  The two had not seen each other for the longest time.   They were friends from high school, so it was almost like a reunion.

The two walked into the cafe as they both ordered hot beverages.  As they sat on the high stools to their tall table, they both observed each other.  Jiyong looked over at Seunghyun and realized how much he changed.  He was pretty sure that it was because of Yoona.  Ever since he had gotten married, he was more mature and responsible.

To Jiyong, Seunghyun seemed better off married.  Before he met Yoona, he was uncontrollable.  He was always out partying and Jiyong always wondered how Seunghyun got through college.  Seunghyun was the strongest drinker from their group of friends and he would smoke a pack of cigarettes a day.  Jiyong figured that Yoona made him quit smoking and she had limited his drinking.  It brought a smile on his face to know that Seunghyun was now happier.

To Seunghyun, Jiyong changed.  He seemed to be more serious.  He wasn't the same fun loving, carefree guy anymore.  Seunghyun noticed that his hair was back to a neutral color and that he had gotten a little taller.  Jiyong had gained some muscle weight and his face looked even more masculine.  Jiyong looked as if he had been stressed for the past four years.

"Jiyong, why did you want me to come here?  We have to be quick and talk about whatever you want to talk about because Yoona expects me home by midnight," Seunghyun notified him.

Jiyong nodded, "It's just refreshing to see you again.  I see that you and Yoona are married now."

"I would have invited you to our wedding, but Yoona was angry at you.  I don't think you would have wanted to attend anyways since Sica was the wedding planner," Seunghyun spoke bluntly.

"Yeah, I heard that she's successful now.  How is she?" he asked.

Seunghyun laughed, "I don't want to sound offensive or anything, but did you want to talk to me so that you could ask me questions about Jessica?  Do you still love her?  She's my sister-in-law, and I know her well enough to know that she still hates you.  Did you know that she waited in the chapel for you for about five hours?  She cried her eyes out."

"Well, she's not the only victim," Jiyong muttered inaudibly.

"What did you say?" Seunghyun asked puzzlingly.

Jiyong shook his head, "It's nothing.  It's just that I'm getting married to Sandara Park in a few months, and I wanted to ask you if you'd like to be my best man."

"Wait, you're getting married to Sandara Park?  She's one of Yoona's friends!" Seunghyun exclaimed, "Why are you getting married to her?"

"It's more complicated.  Sandara told me today that Jessica is our wedding planner," Jiyong said, "Sandara should have just killed me."

"This is some twisted up drama!" Seunghyun cried out in disbelief.

Jessica just got off the phone with Tiffany.  Because she had canceled the dinner with Sandara, she had to go for breakfast in the morning with both Sandara and Jiyong.  Jessica sighed loudly.  She should have just went for dinner with them so that it could have been over.  She just couldn't handle it anymore.  She didn't understand why she couldn't stand being in the same room as him.  She just hated the thought of him.  She trained herself for this kind of confrontation.  She knew that she was going to meet him again one day.  Instead of telling him off as she originally planned, she ended up slapping him.  It was satisfying even if she didn't say one word in the speech she had been practicing for the past four years.

She felt the stress impacting her body and decided to listen to some music.  Although she stopped singing, she couldn't bring herself to stop listening to it. It was a form of therapy for her.  She climbed out of her bed and fished through a drawer in her bedside table for her iPod.  She hadn't touched her iPod for a while.  As she looked through it, she saw a small piece of paper that was face down.  She looked at it and a flood of memories returned to her mind.  It was a picture from her first double date.

Flashback...

Jiyong waited in the restaurant with a dissatisfied smile on his face.  He was forced by his college buddies to go on a blind date.  Siwon and Wooyoung were in the same economics class as him, and figured that because he was single, he needed to mingle with a woman.  Jiyong sighed as he continued to wait for his blind date.  He dragged Seunghyun along because he thought that he would reduce any awkwardness.

"I don't get why I had to go.  I have a party to attend later," Seunghyun complained.

"Hyung, please just stop whining!  I need you for moral support," Jiyong pleaded.

"Whatever.  I hope she's ugly so that you suffer for bringing me here," Seunghyun joked.

Jiyong reread the text that Wooyoung had sent him, "Wooyoung said that she's going to be wearing a gray sweater.  The woman with dark hair and a gray sweater is my date."

Seunghyun looked around as he sipped on his iced tea.  He was completely bored.  He then yawned loudly as Jiyong hit his shoulder.  Jiyong hushed him up and signaled for him to sit up.  Seunghyun obliged with a resistant attitude.

The door to the restaurant was opened as they saw two women walk by.  The both of them were looking around for their dates, but Jiyong and Seunghyun didn't notice.  They were just staring at their beauty.  They saw the two women point at them and then shyly walk over to them.  The taller one bowed first as the shorter one followed her bow.

"Hi, my name is Jung Yoona.  I'm supposed to meet up with Kwon Jiyong," the taller one bowed, "I believe that he is my date.  You see my friends, Bora and Yoobin, told me to meet a Kwon Jiyong here.  Those two set it up along with Wooyoung and Siwon."

Yoona noticed that her date had brought along a friend.  She had forced her sister to attend the date to avoid any uncomfortable situations.  Yoona glanced over at her date.  He was pretty cute.  Kwon Jiyong had dirty blonde hair that accentuated his light, flawless skin.  Yoona couldn't help but notice that he was mainly looking at her sister while Jiyong's friend stared at Yoona more.  Yoona smirked as she put her purse on the other side of the table booth.

"Listen, me and my sister will leave our purses here.  We need to go to the ladies' room," Yoona smiled.

"Yeah, of course," Jiyong nodded, "Go on ahead."

Yoona pulled Jessica's purse off of her shoulder and set it on the seat.  She then set her own purse next to Jessica's purse.  After she gave a little wave to the boys, she dragged Jessica by the arm to the restroom.

Yoona let out a high pitched squeal as soon as they entered the restroom.  They were the only ones occupying the restroom so no one heard Yoona's excited behavior.  She quickly clapped her hands together as she playfully slapped Jessica's arm.  Jessica gave her the oddest expression and wondered if her sister was okay.

"Hm, what's wrong with you?" Jessica laughed.

"What's wrong with me?!  What's wrong with you?  Those two guys are so hot!  They're beyond y!  They make all of our guy friends look ordinary!  I will always thank Bora and Yoobin for hooking us up with hot guys," Yoona vowed.

"What do you mean 'we'?  It's only you!  I only went with you for sisterly support.  I really think I should just go home now," Jessica grew worried.

"Unnie," Yoona said as she put her hand on her sister's shoulder, "We're not in high school anymore.  You are a grown woman who should date.  Please just take this into consideration.  We don't see hot single guys every day.  Take a hold of this opportunity.  Who knows?  He might be the guy you share the rest of your life with."

Jessica had never actually dated anyone.  Even her younger sister was more experience in the dating world than her.  Yoona wasn't the type that actually had a serious relationship, but she did know how to flirt.  Jessica's heart began to pound out of her chest.  She was very nervous and she didn't know how to handle the situation.

"Okay, I'll do it," Jessica gulped.

"Great!" Yoona exclaimed, "Now you take the blonde one and I'll take the other one."

Jessica was puzzled, "No, wait!  The blonde one was your date!  I don't think the other one and I will have much in common, but I'll probably have less in common with the blonde one!"

"Unnie, just relax," Yoona advised, "Have you seen him?  He had his eyes on you the whole time.  He didn't even look at me for more than a second.  And I know you were looking at him.  Plus, the taller one was looking at me more.  And I find him a little more attractive.  I'll get the taller one, and you get the blonde one, okay?"

Jessica breathed, "I really don't know..."

"Are you attracted to the blonde one more or the taller one?  If you like the taller one, I'll go for the blonde one.  As long as a handsome man gets my number by the end of the day, I'm fine," Yoona joked, "Now look me straight in the eyes, and tell me.  Who do you think is cuter?  Our taste is different, so I know we won't choose the same guy."

"Fine, I think the blonde one is cuter," Jessica huffed.

"Great, now let me work my magic," Yoona grinned.

"I don't know how you're going to do it," Jessica admitted, "How are you going to make them agree to switch dates?"

Yoona smirked, "Unnie, please just trust me and let me work my magic."

Jiyong and Seunghyun sat on their seats as they waited for their dates to return from the restroom.  Seunghyun had a bright smile on his face as he turned to Jiyong.

"They're both really pretty," Seunghyun said shyly.

Jiyong giggled, "You're talking like a little kid!"

"Okay, just hear me out!" Seunghyun pleaded, "I think we should switch dates.  I saw you looking at your date's sister.  I think you should go for her and I'll go for your original date."

"Hm, I don't know," Jiyong stated.

"Jiyong, please let me have this!  Please do it!" Seunghyun begged.

Jiyong crossed his arms, "I thought that you wished that my date was ugly so that I can suffer.  Are you calling Miss Yoona ugly?"

"No," Seunghyun shook his head quickly, "She's beautiful and that's why I want to have her as my date!"

A mischievous smirk appeared on Jiyong's face as he cupped his chin with his hand.  He planned to milk out whatever he can from a desperate Seunghyun.  Truth was that Jiyong really liked Yoona's sister and was instantly attracted to the woman.  She had a sweet smile and her eyes looked angelic.  He couldn't tear his eyes away from her.  Jessica had captured his gaze.

"Hm, that Yoona girl was really pretty, though," Jiyong trolled, "I think I should have something in return if I let you have this date."

"What do you want?" Seunghyun rolled his eyes.

Jiyong negotiated, "I think you should do my laundry for one whole month.  You also have to let me have all of your red bean jelly in your mini-fridge."

"No!" Seunghyun shook his head.

"Fine," Jiyong sighed, "You know this woman could be your soulmate.  She could be the one.  I never saw you act like this over a woman, and it's a shame that she'll have to be mine.  If I end up marrying her, you'd be my best man and you'd have to watch her walk down that aisle with two words in your mind:  what if.  It's a shame you let her go because you refused to wash my underwear and because you didn't want to let me have your red bean jelly."

"Okay, I'll do it!" Seunghyun finally agreed.

"Good," Jiyong grinned, "Now tell me how we're going to perform this switcheroo."

Before Seunghyun could answer his question, they both fell silent because the two women returned from the ladies room.  Yoona looked extremely confident while Jessica looked fairly shy.  She even hid behind her sister.  It surprised Jiyong that Yoona and Jessica did not sit down.  Instead, they stood by the table.  Yoona cleared as she looked at Jiyong.

"Hi," Yoona greeted, "Well, I couldn't help but notice that the little girl out the window is crying."

Jiyong and Seunghyun looked at the window and saw a little girl crying her eyes out.  She looked up at a tree and they soon realized that the little girl's cat was stuck on a tree branch.  Since the little girl was short, she could not reach her cat.  Yoona's eyes darted towards Seunghyun and they made eye contact for the first time.  Yoona extended her hand out to him and he shook her hand.

"I know this is a little too sudden, but will you please help me rescue that little girl's cat?" Yoona asked, "I think you and I should help her because you're taller than your friend here and I'm taller than my unnie.  I just really hate seeing a miserable child."

"Oh, okay," Seunghyun nodded.

Jessica saw Yoona give her a wink as Yoona led Seunghyun outside to help the wretched child.  Jessica found herself in the most awkward situation as she stood there by herself with Jiyong.  Jiyong saw that she seemed uncomfortable.  The focus of Jessica's eyes scrambled around the room with hopes that she would avoid his eye contact.

"Jessica sshi, please take a seat," Jiyong beckoned her.

Jessica smiled and then took a seat.  She fidgeted in her chair as she fiddled with her fingers.  She gulped and then sighed loudly.

"Listen, my sister wants us to switch dates.  I hope your not offended.  I know that I shouldn't be telling you this, but it's so damned awkward that I can't handle it.  I'm sorry that you're stuck with me.  I'm pretty sure you'd rather stick to your original date.  You know...this is just stupid.  I think I should just go home," Jessica shook her head.

"Why would I want you to go home?  You're beautiful," Jiyong commented.

Jessica just stared at Jiyong and realized that he had gotten nervous.  It was as if those words had just slipped out of his mouth.  Some of the uneasiness dwindled as they both burst into laughter to see the view out the window.  Out the window, Yoona was on Seunghyun's shoulders as Yoona tried to reach for the cat.  Seunghyun was trying to balance the weight on his shoulders as Yoona nagged at him to provide some stability.

Jiyong looked away from the window as soon as Jessica did.  He gave a warm smile that displayed his white pearly teeth.

"By the way, my name is Kwon Jiyong," Jiyong introduced himself.

"My name is Jung Jessica.  It's a pleasure to meet you," Jessica replied in a mellow tone.

Jiyong looked at her as she spoke.  Her voice was beautiful.  Her voice was as beautiful as her.  Her long brown hair flowed down her back as she rested her head on her hand.  She stirred the cup of tea in front of her casually not knowing that he was admiring her.  Jiyong didn't know why but he sensed her good heart already.  Her good-willed soul was seen through her gentle eyes.  Just her presence made Jiyong smile.  It was as if she could make the birds sing and flowers bloom just by making an appearance.  It was the first time that Jiyong's eyes lit up as he looked at a woman.  He thought that he was looking at a goddess.

"The pleasure is all mine," he truthfully insisted.

"JUNG JESSICA, DON'T YOU DARE THINK ABOUT HIM AGAIN!" Jessica bellowed at the top of her lungs.

She was in her bedroom and she just realized that she was thinking of the time that she had first met him.  She looked at herself in the mirror of her vanity table as she lightly hit the top of her head with her fists hoping that it would knock the thought of Jiyong out of her brain.

"He is the enemy.  He is the one who broke your heart," Jessica recited, "He's the one that you must destroy!"
