After midnight

A guide to romance

Kai pulls away and Kyungsoo whimpers at the loss of his lips.

“Kyungsoo. We are doing this again?” he asks seriously.

Taking Kyungsoo home was the deal, now, which home was left undefined. They ended up at Kai’s house, just like the first time. Kyungsoo is so much nicer when intoxicated, very submissive and conceding; nothing like the Kyungsoo who bites back at everything Kai says. Coaxing slow kisses on him is easy, but neither of the two has the restraint to keep it up, and they start kissing each other furiously, like there is no tomorrow. Kyungsoo, who flinches at Kai’s touch and avoids him like the plague when he is sober, is now leaning into Kai’s caresses and grunts every time their bodies press together. This sweet Kyungsoo is the one Kai worships, with his kisses down his white soft skin and with offerings of his lips on his.

But this Kyungsoo is not sober; Kai cannot be sure this is what he really wants. He looks like he wants it and he responds to Kai’s advances, but what if it’s just the alcohol talking? Besides, Kyungsoo is not giving Kai a clear signal, he is not taking initiative in anything. He responds alright, but he doesn’t try anything for himself; just like the first time, he is not even trying to undress Kai, or touch him, or guide his hands. The first time maybe he had been slightly insecure, but this time around should be different, right?

“Wow, you’re bored of me after one time? This should be a record” Kyungsoo murmurs in a low voice. Kai gasps in surprise; why would Kyungsoo think of something like that? How did he manage to distort Kai’s intentions so much in his head?

“Bored? No way, Soo; I’m just asking” Kai places a kiss on the shorter ’s collar bone, as clear indication that he is nowhere near bored; on the contrary, he is very very interested.

“Then don’t” he answers in a weak voice, tangling his fingers in Kai’s hair.

--

Sehun shoves his hands deeper in his pockets. It’s a chilly night and he wonders briefly if his hyungs are dressed warmly for their date night out. Oops, business-date night out; Kyungsoo hyung made that perfectly clear, repeating it over and over again. Sehun checks his wrist watch; twelve forty five am. He picks up his walking pace; the sooner he gets in his safe, warm, comfortable bed, the better.

His phone is constantly vibrating in his back pocket. Why is that girl not getting it? Sehun said it loud and clear: he is not interested. He made sure that the girl understood, because he wouldn’t want a misunderstanding with the friend of his best friend’s girlfriend. Ah, why is Sehun bothering so much with people? And why do they keep on setting him these double dates? He is not interested in a relationship right now, every one of his friends know that. Or, at least, they should have realized by now, since he is rejecting every offer he gets.

He turns the corner of the path and he sees someone sitting on the bench. At first, he thinks it’s just another homeless guy who is bound to freeze to death, sitting on a small bench by the river all night, but then he notices that his coat is too neat and clean to belong to a homeless guy and he is wearing a red bulky scarf around his neck. So, maybe this is not a homeless guy, maybe it’s just some crazy guy. But, as he gets closer, he thinks that maybe this is not a crazy guy either, because Sehun is pretty sure he knows this man!

He walks closer silently and he recognizes Luhan’s blonde locks and his pretty face, even though he has his head bent forward and his eyes closed. His cheeks are red from the cold and his nose is red too, but it’s kind of cute. Sehun sits on the bench next to Luhan, who is completely unaware.

“So, this is your secret for your wrinkle-free skin” Sehun says and his voice is positively booming in the silence of the night. Luhan jolts in surprise and looks around startled. Sehun stifles a laugh. Luhan’s eyes focus on Sehun and then he rubs his eyes with his fists, squinting.

“Sehun?” he asks bewildered. Sehun flashes a wide smile in response. “What time is it?” Luhan glances warily around at the empty path.

“Something to one am” Sehun answers casually and shrugs. Luhan looks surprised.

“Wow, it’s really late…What are you doing here?”

“The question is: what are you doing here?” Sehun corrects. It’s not Sehun who decided to freeze overnight, gazing at the river.

“I…” he starts but then he seems to reconsider “I must have fallen asleep. I’m so tired these days” he explains. Sehun only half believes that, but it’s late, so he will spare him the interrogation.

“Uh-huh…” he agrees reluctantly. Luhan creases his eyebrows. The expression of bewilderment has not left his face for a second; he must be feeling very disoriented.

“What about you?” he asks, as if to distract himself to stay awake.

“I’m going home; that way” Sehun points to the right direction of the path.

“Oh, I see. How was the party?”

“How did you know I was at a party?”

“Well…” Luhan allows a small smile on his lips “It’s late, I can smell a bit of alcohol and smoke –but you are not smoking –your clothes are slightly wrinkled, you dressed up…I’ve been through your age myself you know” he raises an eyebrow. Sehun smiles in response.

“Sure, I was at a party. The main point was a double date but there was a party playing in the background, now that you mention it” he jokes and Luhan lets out a small laugh.

“Double date, huh? Was she any good?” Luhan asks casually –and, bizarrely, Sehun doesn’t mind talking to Luhan about his personal life, for some reason...Sehun shakes his head.

“She was a bit boring; and she is really clingy” he adds, feeling his phone vibrating again. He shouldn’t have left his phone unsupervised, not for one moment; she took initiative and exchanged their numbers and now she will be pestering him for who knows how long.

“Girls are supposed to be clingy at this age; boys don’t care enough to maintain a relationship but someone has to care, right?” Luhan points out. Sehun shrugs his shoulders; how would he know? He has had only a couple of girlfriends in high school, the kind you break up within a week or so, because your relationship was soooo meaningful…

“You should get out of the cold” Sehun advises, noticing how red Luhan’s cheeks are. He looks even more childish than other times, with his golden curls and his round, sparkly eyes.

“You’re right” Luhan agrees with a smile.

“Would you like me to walk you home or something? It’s pretty late” The streets are dangerous at night; not just from muggers but from drunk drivers as well.

“Hey, I’m a grown man! And I am older than you, so, thanks but no thanks” Luhan waves his hand dismissively and gets up from his seat.

“You’re not that much older. Besides, I look more intimidating than you do” Sehun points out, but he has no real intention to push Luhan to accept him as a bodyguard. Luhan looks Sehun once from head to toe.

“When did you grow so tall? You seemed shorter behind the counter” he concludes, slightly begrudgingly. Sehun lets out a small laugh; yeah, he is on the taller side, the only good thing his father gave him. “Anyway, thanks kid, but I will take myself home. You stay safe and warm, okay?” he suggests and Sehun nods, wondering briefly if this is what it feels like to have a mother who is responsible for you and who actually cares; he wouldn’t know.

Sehun watches Luhan’s figure walking further away towards the opposite direction of his, and smiles to himself. This was a very pleasant midnight surprise.

--

Kyungsoo opens his eyes slowly. This is not his bed and there is no nagging cat either. He glances around at the sunlit room and it looks suspiciously familiar. A lump of limbs and crumbled sheets next to him catches his attention. Is that…?

“Oh, no, not again…” he groans and crushes his face in the pillow. How did he let this happen twice? He is so disappointed in himself. All those days of avoiding him gone to waste. You have such poor self-restraint, Do Kyungsoo

“Good morning princess” Kai greets him just like the first time, in a voice heavy with sleep, which quite honestly sounds more sultry than you might expect. This can’t be happening.

“This is not happening; go away” Kyungsoo mumbles sleepily and grumpily, shoving Kai’s hand and burying himself deeper in the covers. He notes how soft the white linen fabric feels on his skin and how fresh it smells. He could pretend the world doesn’t exist and sleep here content for a while.

He could, but Kai seems to have other plans. He tugs one corner of the covers away and slithers underneath, pressing stubbornly against Kyungsoo and throwing the covers above their heads.

“I am getting very mixed signals from you, you know” he accuses in a serious yet complaining –in a cute way –voice that matches his expression.

“I thought ‘go away’ was a pretty clear signal universally” Kyungsoo retorts and tries to put some space between them to no avail.

“Well, we could use longer metrics of time, not just moments but, let’s say 24 hours? You’ve been pushing and pulling me during the last 24 hours you see. I clearly recall you said you wanted me ‘inside you’ last night, so why should I go away this morning?” Kai scrunches his eyebrows.

“Did I really say that?” Kyungsoo wonders and Kai nods affirmatively, giving him the dreadful answer –Kyungsoo really needs to find a way to keep his mouth under control when he is under the influence of alcohol... “Well, I am sorry I said that, but, trust me: I want to stay away from you” He should make things as clear as he can.

Kai pouts and he looks oddly cute and se*y. Kyungsoo knows he shouldn’t be thinking of Kai like that –because look where that got him last night –but the guy is innately se*y, there is no way around it.

“Why?” he demands.

“Because I don’t want to get any closer to you” Clear enough? Kyungsoo made sure he sounded as detached as possible.

“Why?”

“Because you are not safe” Okay, this is as far as Kyungsoo will let himself go, explanation- wise. Kai scoots even closer, if that is possible.

“I beg to differ. I’m pretty safe when you are concerned” he says stubbornly and slightly agitated. Kyungsoo does not want to participate in this conversation. He rolls his eyes in the dim light under the white covers.

“It’s not you as a person; it’s your kind of people” Kyungsoo thinks he has already let out more than he would like, so he turns his head the other way. Kai starts pestering him, poking his arm and asking why in every possible voice, intonation and mood, but Kyungsoo ignores him.

It is Kai’s kind of people that he wants to stay away from; he promised himself that he would do that.

You see, Kyungsoo deep down is a sappy romantic; sometimes he wonders if he is more romantic than Baekhyun even. Because Baekhyun likes the small details of romance, his romanticism has finesse and rosy ambiance, while Kyungsoo’s hidden romantic ideas are far more influenced by pop culture; he wants fireworks and cheesy dramatic lines and someone to have a huge secret crush on him before they get together through a series of fatal events.

The problem with Kyungsoo’s brain is not just the un-likeliness of such a scenario, but that he is also attracted to the wrong sort of people to fulfill his extravagant romantic aspirations. He is hoping for a modern prince, a beautiful butterfly, but he is attracted, like a moth to the candle flame, to every sultry, bad-boy smile. And guess what, in real life, bad-boy smile is a package with a bad boy; one that leaves his heart broken and makes him hate himself for even believing in the possibility of a nice, stable relationship with such a guy.

“Come on, Soo! Tell me what kind of person I am!” Kai squeals and throws himself on Kyungsoo’s back, making the latter groan in discomfort. Kyungsoo was able to tune him out earlier, but now his track of thought is lost and Kai is impossible to ignore, not to mention how hard breathing has become in the last few moments!

“I am not a freaking psychologist! If you want to find out what kind of person you are, go take a test and talk about your childhood, okay?” he exclaims annoyed. This is a bit simplistic and unfair to psychologists; but Kyungsoo will not complain if Kai can become their problem instead of his.

“Seriously, have I done something wrong?” Kai asks more timidly, looking at Kyungsoo from under his long lashes. No, you haven’t. Kyungsoo would like to think he is a fair judge of people and he has to admit that Kai has done nothing wrong.

“Not, you, as, a person” he reminds his earlier words, stressing them slightly. He could have stressed them more, but he can see that his irritation is starting to wear off on Kai and he feels slightly guilty for that. Kai presses his lips in thought and stares at him seriously for a couple of silent moments. Kyungsoo has almost forgotten how Kai is splayed on top of him and his lungs are not functioning to their full capacity.

“Did you have some traumatic experience with ‘my kind of people’?” he guesses and Kyungsoo only sighs and nods; is there really any point in trying to keep it a secret? “Does it have something to do with the fact that you never take initiative?”

Kyungsoo feels struck by lightning in hearing these words. They are closer to the truth than he would like; how did Kai notice that? He didn’t think Kai would be so perceptive.

But it’s true. And he is well aware of it too. He never takes initiative when the situation is more intimate; he doesn’t know how to do it. He has never had to do it before and, if he ever tries to do it, he will probably fail miserably.

Let’s elaborate in his sad situation for a moment. Kyungsoo is attracted to the wrong sort of people; and they are attracted to him too. It’s something about the innocence in his looks that makes those people attracted to their prey. It’s almost as if he is asking for it; he wants them, and they want to break his heart. So, during their time together, be it a week or a month or whatever, everything clicks very naturally for both sides in matters of bedroom activities: one gives and the other takes. Kyungsoo has never thought about the developmental trajectories of his bedroom life; all he was ever requested to do was to exist and comply with the other’s wishes. They always take whatever they want from him, because he is stupid enough to allow it; he exposes himself too much, in the concept of hoping for a serious and steady relationship, however impossible that might be. And then he is…well, he is used and then discarded. He doesn’t need to participate in anything, he just goes through the physical part and then he frets about the –nonexistent– relationship part. He doesn’t know how he could attempt intimate advances, unless someone instructs him how to do it step by step and he complies submissively.

So, if Kai wants that, then why is he not instructing him? Then he will do it. Why does he even care to point out that Kyungsoo doesn’t take initiative?

“I’m sorry; that was too much, wasn’t it?” Kai mumbles after a long, silent pause. Kyungsoo only blinks in response. “Ah, never mind; it’s too early in the morning to be bothered with such things!” Kai dismisses cheerfully and lifts his weight from Kyungsoo, who is left dumbfounded –but, at least he is breathing normally again. How does Kai change moods so quickly? “Come, I’ll make you breakfast!” he instructs and pulls Kyungsoo’s hand. Kyungsoo looks at him curiously as they sit side by side on the bed.

“You are going to make me breakfast after I told you to go away and after I implied you are a bad person?” Is it going to be poisoned or something? Because people don’t respond to insults by making breakfast; they simply throw the other people out of their house.

“I’m sure you’re hungry all the same” Kai says and shrugs his shoulders carefree.

“Why?” Kyungsoo insists “Is it some sort of reward for last night?” Kai pauses in thought.

“No, it’s more like an offering” he decides with a smile. An offering? What is Kyungsoo, a god or some sort of deity? The thought alone is so ridiculous that it makes him laugh out loud.

Kai smiles widely in response, looking so much more dazzling in the soft morning light. This feels unexpectedly comfortable. As his laughter dies down, Kai’s brown eyes capture his gaze in a long exchange of eye contact. It might sound silly, but Kyungsoo feels slightly exposed after a while, as if Kai’s warm brown eyes can read inside his mind and heart.

“I am attracted to every part of you, Do Kyungsoo” Kai breaks the silence and leans closer to kiss Kyungsoo’s shoulder with his soft, warm lips. His serious voice makes Kyungsoo’s heart flip and melt. This is not good; if his soft heart is swayed, then it will break so much more easily.

But for now, he just stares at Kai with wide eyes, surprised by the sudden affection. Kai looks at him steadily in the eyes and regains some of his playful mood; but something is not quite the same as before. Maybe Kyungsoo’s eyes are not looking the same way as before.

“And I think it’s very clear, Soo, that, because of that, I am not going anywhere anytime soon. I don’t know what kind of bad person you think I am, but I am afraid you are stuck with me for sometime” he half-jokes lightly and gathers the sheets to throw them protectively over Kyungsoo’s shoulders.

This is all very…new. Very warm and human.

Without thinking, Kyungsoo leans forward and pecks Kai on the lips childishly.

“Thank you” he mumbles, not sure what he is thankful for, and then looks down at his hands shyly. He tries very hard not to blush because that would be so foolish, but it’s almost impossible for his inexperienced mind; he just took initiative. It was small, but it was a start.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a/n. A bit more of Kaisoo this time, and I am so sorry, I have no idea why I keep writing bedroom-related stuff when it’s their turn…But that’s a part of romance too, so I guess I am not off topic; I just hope and trust you are amazingly insightful people who can read beyond words and see the romantic details in such situations (which I am sure you are, but don’t worry either way, because I am currently training you to become such people ^.^) At least, now you know what’s wrong with Kyungsoo in this relationship –there will be more in the future, of course.

It’s always refreshing to write Sehun’s pov but, unfortunately, since he is not big on drama and feelings, he offers more insight and less plot development –I am well aware of my schizophrenic personalities’ flaws and I apologize for them. But what would hunhan be, if half the perspective was missing? Okay, this a/n is getting too long. Thank you guys for your time and for subscribing and I love you! Until next time, kitty~
