Chapter 10 - Cooking Lessons

A Complicated Regard

Jungkook looked on with awe and amazement to see so many students in Taehyung’s school. It was a normal thing for a school to have this many students but Jungkook felt like this was the most inspiring and marvelous thing that he had ever seen.

“Exactly why are you so excited?” Taehyung asked the red head ghost with a smile tugging at his lips. “I just… This just feels so normal. I feel like I’m a part of the school, you know?”Jungkook replied and continued to look on at the surroundings with those gleaming eyes. Taehyung chuckled and walked on, pleased to have Jungkook by his side, pleased that Jungkook was enjoying himself, until he saw Jimin in the distance.

“Hey Jungkook,” he whispered. “Take a look over there. That’s Jimin,” he said suggesting at the cute faced male, who was currently walking towards them looking like a black cloud was hanging above his head. He didn’t seem at all like Taehyung had described. Jungkook thought, that’s the cheerful baby? Where’s all the ‘cheerfulness’?

The elder of the two also noticed the wary and cautious look on Jimin’s face. So when he reached them, Taehyung immediately asked what was wrong. “Good morning to you too,” Jimin sassed back. “Whoa, what’s got your in a bunch?” Taehyung asked casually.

“What’s got my in a bunch is that mom invited that Min Yoongi and his family over for dinner. Which means I have to ing face him after…” Jimin visibly shuddered.

“After what?” Taehyung asked curiously. Suddenly Jimin’s face reddened. “Nothing!” he snapped at Taehyung. Taehyung was taken aback. “Hyung?” he called out.

Realizing what he just did, Jimin immediately apologized, saying that he wasn’t feeling so good. His eyes, however, never stopped wandering around the surroundings, keeping his guard out for a particular person. “I have a lot of things on my mi… , I think he’s coming this way! Gotta go now, see you later, Tae-ah,” Jimin said and left in a hurry.

“That was weird,” Jungkook commented. Taehyung nodded. “I wonder why he’s being so erratic today,” the elder commented and tried to walk further when a sudden arm s around his shoulder. “There you are,” the person to whom the arm belonged said.

Now Jungkook couldn’t help but feel jealous to see that someone else was initiating skinship with Taehyung. But he tried his best not to show it.

“Hoseok hyung!” Taehyung was startled. His eyes wavered nervously back to Jungkook to get a glimpse of his ghost friend in the back and he saw that Jungkook had a bright smile plastered n his face. It was a little too bright for the both of them.

“Did I scare you?” Hoseok asked innocently. Taehyung sneakily pulled off his arm from his shoulders and replied that he was just a little startled. “Okay then,” Hoseok said, noticing the action that his boyfriend had just carried out. “Come on, let me drop you off to class,” Hoseok said and entwined his fingers into Taehyung’s.

“Uhh hyung,” Taehyung hesitated. “Not today. I have to do something.” His eyes wandered from Hoseok to the invisible Jungkook. “I’ll, umm,” he said occupied in his thoughts, “See you later.” With that he left in a hurry leaving an astonished and a little heartbroken Hoseok.

Jungkook floated up to Taehyung who now hid behind a wall. “Why’d you do that? He seemed heartbroken back there,” Jungkook asked. Taehyung closed his eyes and let out a sigh. “I promised that I’d show you around, didn’t I?” he asked still closing his eyes.

Now the ghost felt touched; but it was mixed with a tinge of guilt. “Taehyung,” he said without adding any honorifics. “It’s alright. Go back to your boyfriend. You don’t have to go through all this for me. I can take a tour by myself,” he said softly, urging the elder to go back even though he didn’t want Taehyung to.

Taehyung ran his hand through his hair and sighed again. “Let me do this, Jungkook,” he said in a serious yet pleading tone that Jungkook couldn’t say anything. “I promised you, so let me do this.” And Jungkook nodded absently because he didn’t have the strength to say no.

The halls were crowded with students like any other day. Namjoon walked towards the student council room with his usual confidence when he saw Jin in the distance, laughing with a new face who had blonde hair and was relatively taller than Jin. It was someone whom the president had never seen before so he walked up to them curiously.

“Oh, Namjoon,” Jin called out and waved at him earning a sneer from his companion. “Hi,” Namjoon wished and turned to the boy beside Jin. Jin introduced, “This is Cha Youngjae, a childhood friend of mine. He’ll be studying here for a few days as a part of that exchange student program. Youngjae, this is Kim Namjoon, the school president and…” But before he could complete the introduction, Youngjae interrupted not very politely. “It’s great to meet you, Namjoon ssi. But I have to get going now. I haven’t even informed the teacher that I’ve arrived. I hope to see you around, Jin,” he said, his eyes only focusing on the eldest in the situation.

Jin nodded, not at all bothered by the interruption. Namjoon, on the other hand didn’t like him already. As they watched the blonde walk away, Namjoon commented that he seemed interesting in a sarcastic way. “Rich brats are always like that, Namjoonie,” Jin replied back with a giggle. Namjoon raised his eyebrows. “What do you mean?” he asked.

“He’s the second son of the founder of this school,” Jin explained. Namjoon turned to his hyung, really interested now. “How are you friends?” he asked.

“We lived in the same neighborhood a couple of years back. But he moved away to America. Even though he was a certified brat, he was kind of friendly and competitive, so tadah! We became friends that way,” Jin replied light heartedly.

Namjoon wasn’t satisfied with the answer but he decided not to press on it too much. “So,” he teased, “I have a thought. What if he came back from America just so he could see you?” Jin let out an uncontrollable “pfft” and laughed. “What?” Namjoon asked. “That could be true. How could anyone not like you? I mean you’re hot and cute at the same time. And did I mention adorable?”

Jin rolled his eyes playfully as Namjoon continued his hilarious scenarios. “Just imagine, Cha Youngjae ssi and Kim Seokjin, childhood friends, promises never to leave each others’ side. But Youngjae ssi breaks the promise due to family problems and goes away to America. After what seemed like forever, Youngjae ssi returns to be re-united with his childhood friend; only, that’s not the intention in his head. He wants something more. Much more.”

Jin laughed aloud, covering his mouth politely with his hands – the 100% Seokjin style of laughing. “You sound like one of those narrators promoting a new movie or something,” he said in his high pitched, barely coherent tone. Namjoon chuckled and continued, “But upon his return, Youngjae ssi finds that Seokjin is already happy with a handsome and totally awesome person, Namjoon. What’ll happen to Youngjae ssi? Will he fight for Seokjin? Or like a good sportsman, will he wave the white flag? Find out in ‘Youngjae’s return’. Out in cinemas now.”

The elder continued to laugh aloud. “I am never watching such a silly movie, if ever it is released,” he said and wiped the tears of laughter forming in his eyes. Namjoon chuckled to see his boyfriend laugh in such a carefree manner. He always noticed it but it was hard not to notice it again – Jin’s laugh sounded magical.

“Park Jimin, you get down here this instant or else I’m coming up there!” Mrs. Park called out loudly despite the guests in the house. She then turned to Yoona and apologized on behalf of Jimin. “He must be putting on makeup,” Yoona joked making the woman with the same eye smile as Jimin laugh.

Jimin tried hard to concentrate on his homework. Because, screw this , I am fabulous and there’s nothing my mom can do to make me get down there, he thought and tapped on his notebook with his pencil. Not when that Yoongi is around!

Yoongi. Ah, that boy had seriously been prying his mind for the past hours. And Jimin didn’t understand why. (It was more of he didn’t want to understand really)

Jimin recalled the kiss that Min Yoongi had enforced on him. He recalled the look of distraught and shock he had on when Min Yoongi had forced the kiss on him. He recalled his body movements freezing for a second or so. He recalled how his body then slowly started to react towards the forced kiss. He recalled closing his eyes slowly, the rapid heartbeats, the goose bumps he got, the feeling of…

“GODDAMMIT!” he groaned and scratched his head miserably, trying to claw out the memory from his brain. But it only resulted in him messing up his shiny black hair to the point of resembling a cave man.

“Park Jimin, if you’re not down in the next five minutes, I swear to god…” Jimin’s mom was halfway through cursing her son when she was suddenly interrupted by an all too familiar voice. “Perhaps I should go get him,” Yoongi offered Mrs. Park and gave her a winsome smile.

“HELL NO!” Jimin cursed and ran out of his room. “Don’t you dare send that devil up my roo…”

Yoongi grinned, his smile dripping with mischief and contentment on seeing Jimin slowly purse his lips in embarrassment to see all of the Min family staring awkwardly at him. He never really intended to go up to Jimin’s room (at least not yet anyway). That was just a trick to get the cute boy to come down. Because honestly speaking, Yoongi kind of missed him.

Jimin cleared his throat and patted down his hair as if he did not just make a fool out of himself by running out of his room, shouting like an idiot while looking like a crazy cave man. He noticed Yoongi right in front of him and his face burnt up from even more embarrassment.

“Great of you to finally join us, Jiminnie,” Yoongi remarked cruelly. Jimin gritted his teeth. This was going to be the worst dinner that he had had ever.

“So I hear Yoona’s participating in the annual talent show,” Mr. Park asked as he plopped the piece of sliced steak into his mouth. Yoona cheerfully replied that she was looking forward. “Mom and dad are going to be there,” she announced excitedly, “Even oppa.” Her tone of mischief couldn’t be heard as she spoke the next sentence.

“Jimin oppa, won’t you come too?”

Jimin didn’t look up from his food. It wasn’t that he was hungry or anything that his face remained plastered to the table. It was just his sitting position. Stupid mom had to put him right opposite from that stupid Yoongi. Mom, do you hate your only son that much?

“Umm,” he said and stuffed the green beans into his mouth.

“Jimin, are you so hungry that you can’t even face the guests?” Jimin’s mom scolded. Mrs. Min just laughed saying that Jimin was a growing boy and he needed food. Jimin finally looked up. But his eyes immediately landed on the girl beside Yoongi, completely ignoring the smirking lad right before him.

“I’ll be there, Yoona. When is it?” he asked with a huge (fake) smile. Yoona gave an all too bright smile. “Oh, you don’t need to know. Oppa will pick you up, won’t you, oppa?” she said and turned to Yoongi. Yoongi was impressed at how much his sister was doing to get Jimin to get together with him. It was like she could read his mind. Oh well, siblings and their weird powers of mind reading.

“Yeah, sure. Will that be alright, Mr. and Mrs. Park?” Yoongi asked innocently.

Jimin’s mom squealed. “That would be lovely Yoongi. Jimin needs to spend more time with humans,” she glared at her son. Mr. Park just smiled and nodded approvingly. Jimin scoffed at his mother’s behavior. “I do spend time with humans, mom, that’s why I don’t talk to him,” he quickly spat, his fork pointing at the creepy erted alien in front of him.

“Yah Park Jimin!” His mom scowled. “Where are your manners?” she turned to Yoongi’s parents and apologized in his stead. Mr. and Mrs. Min just laughed casually and said that Jimin was right. “You have nothing to apologize about when our son here is too lazy to even do anything about anything,” Mr. Min said.

Jimin’s gaze still didn’t fall anywhere near the fair skinned male in front of him. He was about to continue stuffing himself with the delicious piece of juicy steak when his breath hitched suddenly and he let out a tiny, not very manly, high pitched yelp.

“Jimin, is something wrong?” his dad asked, concern enveloping his face. “No,” Jimin replied and bit his lip. But his cracking voice didn’t really assure anyone. “I just bit my tongue, that’s all,” he pushed aside his burning cheeks and kept his face glued to the plate on the table.

Jimin gritted his teeth and hid his flushed face because did Yoongi just brush my leg with his? He didn’t dare sneak a look at the boy opposite to him lest he saw a scene that confirmed his thoughts.

Yoongi on the other hand on the inner walls of his cheeks as his lips curved into the tiniest of smirks. His gaze never left the adorable boy in front of him. Even as the other members in the dinner party continued to talk, their voices drained out into muddling because his concentration was only on one person that whole night which let him to wonder. Why the hell did I even hate him so much in the first place?

Hoseok checked his phone for the tenth time since the last five minutes. He sighed and flopped down his bed on his back, slightly bouncing as he placed his phone on his chest. There were no texts, no missed calls, no nothing.

Taehyung wasn’t replying to his texts.

Normally, he wouldn’t mind at all. He knew that Taehyung had a life of his own and wasn’t always on the phone but this particular day, he couldn’t help but feel super anxious and scared.

And it might have had something to do with that stupid dream of his.

It wasn’t anything physically or mentally scary. Nothing frightening of the sort. But it emotionally hurt Hoseok. Because in his dream he saw Taehyung in a huge labyrinth, running away from him, going farther and farther away from him until finally, he stopped abruptly.

Hoseok didn’t know how but he had a gut feeling that they had reached the middle of the maze. The air was silent and cold. But what was colder was the look on Taehyung’s face.

“Let go.” The orange head spoke this one sentence and it had Hoseok’s world suddenly crumbling down like a tumbling skyscraper in an earthquake.

“Taehyung-ah, what…?” Hoseok tried to step towards the boy but his whole body became stiff. All the strength to lift even his arms fell and he noticed his arms fall limp onto the sides of his body. Something was stopping him from getting closer to his boyfriend. And invisible force if you will.

“Hyung,” Taehyung said in an icy tone which seemed hardly like his voice at all. But it was his voice. Hoseok knew because he had seen his boyfriend angry.

“I think it’s time for us to break up,” he simply said, his face void of any emotions. Hoseok knotted his eyebrows in utter confusion. “What are you saying, Taehyung? Don’t be like this. Don’t you love me anymore?” he asked desperately.

A small smile spread on Taehyung’s lips. But his face had the expression of pain and guilt. “I do. I really do. But I’m not in love with you.”

Hoseok took another deep breath and checked his phone once again. Still nothing.

If it were any other day, he would have dismissed the dream off as one of his crazy imaginations. After all, he was known to create silly scenarios in his head. But this one was creepy and cold and thus lingered on in his head. And Taehyung’s behavior that day wasn’t very encouraging as well.

The younger male in the relationship had ignored him the whole day. In fact, Hoseok didn’t see him the entire day if not for that little encounter early in the morning before classes began. Even his classmates hadn’t seen him even during lunch break nor did they catch a glimpse of him after school. Hoseok let out another deep sigh as he closed his eyes.

“It’s just a dream,” he said aloud, trying to convince himself that everything was fine and everything was just in his imagination.

Taehyung read the book before him again and again but not a single word could be absorbed. Jungkook just kept quiet even though he knew that everything that his hyung was doing was wrong. But there was that silent smile on his face which seemed unmistakably knowing.

“I never knew that cooking could be so easy,” Taehyung commented happily and put in a pinch of salt again into the pot that was boiling on the stove. His parents had left the house in account to relive their romantic high school dates and Aejin was at her friends’ house having one of those sleep overs where they basically braided each others’ hair and shared stories about boys and news on who’s dating whom. So in short, all the cooks of the house were nowhere to be found, leaving the ever so dumb and diligent Taehyung all alone to cook his own food.

Like the orange haired chef, Jungkook was now in a comfortable t-shirt with kitten printed pajamas. “It’s cute,” Taehyung had commented when he hugged Jungkook to let the clothes magically appear on his body as well.

“Hyung, are you sure you know what you’re doing?” Jungkook asked and peered into the pot. All color on Jungkook’s fair face drained to see the bubbling broth of death because its color was a mixture between murky brown and demon purple. Jungkook was sure no colors existed and that Taehyung had just created a new shade of color.

“Sure, I’m following the recipe here. What could go wrong?” he asked and added a bunch of oddly cut cheese cubes into the pot. “And with that, it’s done!” he announced happily and checked his end result.

“It looks kind of pale, doesn’t it?” he asked for Jungkook’s opinion. Pale? It looks friggen poisonous! Jungkook replied in thought but decided to say nothing lest he hurt the chef’s feelings.

“Let’s taste,” Taehyung said and stirred the strange concoction with a ladle. Jungkook was actually surprised that the ladle didn’t sizzle and melt away due to the high level of poison of the mixture. “Hyung, are you sure it’s okay?” he asked, having a last minute decision to stop Taehyung from putting the spoon into his mouth.

The ghost turned to stop him but… Crap! Too late!

Taehyung sipped in the gravy and tasted it for several seconds. Jungkook waited in anticipation for his hyung to die or something but nothing of the sort happened.

“It’s kind of alright. It just needs a little bit more salt,” Taehyung commented and went to go get more salt from the cabinets. Jungkook stared in disbelief at his hyung. Was his tongue made of iron?

As Taehyung added pinch after pinch, Jungkook continued to stare at him with so much amazement and contentment that it was obvious that he felt ‘something’ for the person before him.

Taehyung chose exactly that moment to look up and saw the spirit looking at him weirdly. He was not in denial mode any longer so he wasn’t surprised to feel his heart skip a beat to make eye contact with the ghost.

“What? Do I have something on my face?” he laughed, trying to hide his somehow forbidden feelings. Jungkook gave him a look of pity but that beautifully round face still had a tinge of adoration and affection on it. “You’re a genius in school,” Jungkook spoke out honestly. “You’re amazing in sports as well. But why is it that the food you cooked looks like something that has been delivered directly from the underworld? And to think you even tasted it and said that it lacked only salt. Are you some sort of super human?”

Taehyung decided to assume those words to be compliments. “It’s not that bad. Do you wanna try?” he asked and held out the spoon for Jungkook to taste.

Jungkook laughed and turned away from the boy before him and that disgusting looking pot of goo. “I don’t think I wanna die again. Besides, hyung, even if I wanted to, I’m a ghost, remember? I can’t touch.”

The elder stopped all his movements for a second. Then he wiped the spoon with his index finger and held it out for the ghost. “You can taste it this way,” he said and Jungkook didn’t know if he was being cute or silly or both.

Jungkook shook his head. “I don’t think that’ll work either,” he tried to explain but Taehyung cut him off. “Just try it,” he urged.

He slowly lifted Taehyung’s hand and placed his cold lips on it. Jungkook knew it was cold because the moment his lips came contact with Taehyung’s finger, he could feel the warmth of Taehyung’s body and it made him feel warm too.

As expected, he couldn’t taste the dish. But he didn’t want to admit it. In his mind, that little dip on Taehyung’s slender finger was the most delicious food that he had ever tasted because Taehyung had made it. Even if it looked like crap; even if it looked like one of those censored food in those animes, he believed that it tasted better than any French or Italian or Indian or Chinese or Mexican cuisine simply because Taehyung had made it. And for creating the ‘best dish’ in the universe, Jungkook rewarded him by placing a small, delicate and almost unnoticeable kiss on Taehyung’s finger. Almost.

Taehyung felt the chill when Jungkook’s lips touched his finger. But the real shock came when he felt the ghost kiss his finger.

“You’re right,” Jungkook said and lifted his head with what seemed like a painful expression on his face. “It tasted good.” His smile faltered immediately to see Taehyung’s beautiful eyes shinier than usual because they were filled with tears.

“Liar,” Taehyung smiled but the tears were almost falling now. “You couldn’t taste it, could you?” he said. Jungkook decided to push his emotions away and ignore the tears. So he returned the smile. “Yeah. I couldn’t.”

Taehyung the remains of his dish on his finger and savored the taste. Because Jungkook gave me an indirect kiss, he reasoned and let a tear drop fall off to his cheeks. He didn’t know why he was crying. He just cooked with Jungkook, he was going to spend the whole time alone with Jungkook, heck, he just shared their first indirect kiss with Jungkook but he was crying. Why was he crying?

Oh yeah, his mind flashed images of reality in his brain. Jungkook’s a ghost while you’re still alive. You can’t be together no matter what.

“Hyung,” Jungkook whispered and tried to put his ice cold hands on Taehyung’s cheeks to wipe the tears away to show that he loved him. To show that he wanted to be with him. But he didn’t because that was impossible. So he forced himself not to.

The pictures in his mind were very real, Taehyung knew. But every once in a while, everyone escapes reality and lives in their own world, so why shouldn’t he do the same? So he suddenly grabbed Jungkook’s cold hand and pulled him close to his face. Really close.

He let out a controlled sob with that sad smile on his face. “I really want you to taste it,” he said and kissed him on his lips.

To call it magical would be an understatement. For both boys, the kiss felt warm but cold at the same time. It was soft, and sweet and satisfying and incredibly amazing that it somewhat reminded them of fireworks and everything happy. So yes, the kiss kind of reminded them of soft cream; just that it had a weird taste of chicken and an excess amount of salt.

Jungkook pulled away first. “Taehyung,” he called out softly but the elder just slammed his lips to Jungkook’s again without letting him speak. He didn’t want this to come to an end. Just… Not yet.
