Chapter 7 - The ALMOST Encounter

A Complicated Regard

“So you see,” Jungkook said, pointing at the notebook on which both Taehyung and he were supposed to be looking at. “That’s how the Roman civilization disappeared,” he concluded, seeming very pleased with his explanation. Taehyung nodded appreciatively. But he wasn’t looking at the notebook.

Instead of listening to Jungkook explain about the Roman civilization – about how they rose, how they conquered and about how they fell, Taehyung was busy inspecting the ghost’s face. Besides, he didn’t really need to listen because he had already covered this topic ages ago in the library.

The main thoughts of importance that were in Taehyung’s mind at the current mind were –

One. Aren’t ghosts supposed to look scary and haggard?

Two. I wonder if Jungkook was a bi-shounen when he was alive.

Three. Does Jungkook remember anything else about his previous life?

Four. Will he ever remember about his past life?

“You’re not even listening to me are you, hyung?’ Jungkook said unimpressed at the elder’s blank gaze on his face. But his cheeks were definitely heating up so he turned away quickly.

“I was listening,” Taehyung lied but Jungkook fell for it. “Sure you were,” Jungkook replied and floated to the window. It was already dark outside.

“You must have been a really smart kid, huh Jungkook?” Taehyung suddenly asked as he picked up the books and arranged them carefully into his school bag. “I mean, smart beyond your years. For you to know about a second year’s syllabus so well, I’m guessing you were one of those kid geniuses.”

Jungkook chuckled. “Nah,” he replied simply and continued looking out of the window, probably counting the visible stars. Jungkook hadn’t told Taehyung what he remembered from the other day simply because he didn’t want to. Because he had a fair idea that if he told Taehyung about what he remembered, his unfinished business would come closer to being completed.

The younger also remembered something else about him. He was known to be a somewhat selfish kid when he was alive.

“By the way, do you remember anything else about yourself?” Taehyung asked to keep the conversation going. Jungkook panicked for a moment but he quickly composed himself and turned back to the male in the room who was busy cleaning up the room. A swift answer left his lips. “No. None.”

“Oh,” Taehyung commented feeling a little flutter in his chest.

The door to his room suddenly pushed open and his mom peeked in. “Tae-ah,” she asked. “Could you do something for me tomorrow?”
Taehyung stood up straight and gave his full attention to his mother. “What is it, mom?”

“Do you remember uncle Junhong?” she asked, walking into his room. She had a receipt in her hand, Taehyung noticed.

“The doctor at Charity hospital?” Taehyung said, his eyes glancing quickly at the ghost in the room. Thankfully, he was still there, standing in an attention position. “Yeah, him,” his mother replied. Taehyung nodded.

“Well, he’s prescribed a pill for me concerning my allergies. But I forgot to pick them up today. Could you please…” she said when Taehyung cut her off. “Get them for you tomorrow?” he asked and pulled the receipt out of her hands. “Sure thing mom.” And he kissed her cheek. “Anything for the most beautiful woman in the world,” he teased. His mom rolled her eyes. This player.

His mother soon left and Taehyung closed the door to his room again, this time locking it lest someone walked in on him when he was talking to a nonexistent person. “You have a doctor as an uncle?” Jungkook asked.

“Yeah. A really tall one. He’s socially awkward so we don’t really meet up often but he’s the best in the country,” Taehyung said, half chuckling. Noticing Jungkook’s questioning look, he added, “I’m not bragging. He even got an award for it, I think.”

“And he works at Charity Hospital?” Jungkook asked, his looks suddenly becoming a little grave. Taehyung nodded. “Remember it?” Taehyung asked, “That’s the number one hospital in the southern part of the country, I think.”

Jungkook nodded unsurely. That name did sound familiar. Maybe he was admitted there right before he died. Maybe.

“Wanna come along with me tomorrow?” Taehyung suddenly asked, catching Jungkook unaware. Jungkook’s eyes widened to the size of discs in surprise. He did want to go but Taehyung suddenly asking him was a little, not expected.

“Can I go?” he asked, a smile creeping up his face. “Like you said, you’re not a pet. You can go anywhere you want, you know,” Taehyung said. Jungkook quickly asked if he could follow him to school one day.

Taehyung laughed. “I guess you could,” he replied, happy that the spirit mentioned it.

That night, as Taehyung was getting ready to get into bed, he asked the floating ghost something which had been bothering him.

“Jungkook?” he called out.

“Hmm?” the ghost replied, still looking out at the stars in the night sky.

“Where do you go when I sleep?” the elder asked sounding a little concerned. Jungkook wasn’t affected in any way with the question. So he replied readily, “Nowhere and everywhere. I normally float around the neighborhood until the sun rises.”

“Are you serious?” Taehyung asked, shocked at the answer. So he meant to say that he was alone all those nights?

“Yeah,” Jungkook shrugged his shoulders. “I mean, I try searching for anyone who seems familiar or who can see me beside you. But so far there’s none other than you.” Taehyung jolted a bit at the answer. Why did he feel so happy over that last sentence?

“Don’t you feel lonely?” the elder asked.

Jungkook thought about it. Yeah, I do. But all the loneliness goes away when the sun rises and I know that you’re awake, Jungkook thought. Ugh, was I this sappy when I was alive? He wanted to punch a wall, with his head.

“No,” he lied again. “It’s calming.”

But Taehyung saw through that one single lie. “Yah, Jungkook,” he said, walking up to the ghost. “Why did you just lie to me?” he asked, now standing right in front of him. Woah, he looks better up close.

“I didn’t lie,” Jungkook was about to say but his breath suddenly hitched on seeing the taller male right in front of him, clearly violating his personal space. “Uhhh,” he said instead. “Hyung?”

But Taehyung wasn’t listening anymore. He concentrated into those dark brown eyes and lost track of everything else. All that mattered, and all that he could see right at that moment were those unending chasm of brown orbs, in his soul like a vacuum cleaner. And one thought passed his stagnant mind.

Why am I the only one who can see you?

“Uhh,” Jungkook said again, trying to back away. But he couldn’t walk through walls, now could he? (No, even though he was a ghost, he couldn’t. That was a seriously wrong misconception of ghosts. They COULDN’T walk through walls. Jungkook learnt it the hard way).

The ghost knew that if Taehyung comes any closer, he would probably explode of nervousness. Please don’t come closer, he begged mentally.

Unaware of the closing gap between them, Taehyung continued to drown in his thoughts. Until suddenly (and to Jungkook’s gratitude) the door knocked.

Taehyung blinked a couple of times, remembering where they were. “Tae-ah,” they heard Aejin call out. “I’ve kept your laundry outside. Come get it.”

Taehyung quickly backed off, his face reddening by the second. What the hell was that? Nevertheless, he apologized and went to the door to get the freshly washed clothes. Jungkook touched his equally reddening cheeks softly. That was close.

“Anyway,” Taehyung said, swallowing nervously. “You won’t go roaming around at nights anymore,” he said, placing the freshly pressed clothes on one of the shelves. “What do you mean?” Jungkook asked curiously.

“You’ll sleep here at nights,” Taehyung said but Jungkook cut him off quickly. “That’s really nice of you to offer but…”

“Listen to hyung,” Taehyung asserted. “I don’t want you roaming alone at nights. Who knows, you might meet bad ghosts too.” The speaker wanted to punch himself. ‘Bad ghosts’? Was he trying to scare five year olds? But Jungkook seemed to get the point.

“Will it be okay? Won’t it be weird?” the younger asked innocently. “I mean I don’t sleep. And I am already bothering you enough.”

“Its fine,” Taehyung laughed and took out an extra blanket and sheets. “Although I’m not giving up my bed for you,” he concluded. Jungkook smiled gratefully and nodded.

Jin turned to his sides with an excited smile. It was still too early to go to sleep. Besides he still had school work but he couldn’t help but feel dreamy and marvelous and wonderful and all the other synonyms of ‘dreamy’.

His mind drifted off uncontrollably to last Saturday - the day when he went out on that ‘non-date’ date with Namjoon. He hugged the orange topped mushroom plush (which Namjoon had gotten him on Saturday) tightly as he relived every second of the ‘non-date’ date.

It started out as a plain invitation for coffee by Namjoon. The two settled into a café and Namjoon ordered coffee with cookies while Jin, having a little more of a sweet tooth, got pastries and warm caramel coffee. They sat there, enjoying each other’s company and stories when Namjoon asked if he wanted to hang out with him for the day.

“Since you’re free,” Namjoon said, “You are free, right?” Jin just nodded, fearing he would say something stupid because of excitement.

“Alright then,” Namjoon said and paid the waiter. “Shall we?” he asked and suggested towards the exit of the café. Jin giggled (in a totally manly way) and got up.

Everything else went by too quickly. They went to a passing trade fair where Jin’s attention was caught by the mushroom plush. So Namjoon offered to buy it for him. The elder declined it initially but Namjoon was a really persistent fellow. So he ended up buying the plush for Jin and a matching red topped mushroom plush for himself.

“They’re cute,” Namjoon said and handed Jin the one he wanted. Jin couldn’t help but giggle. He knew he was acting like a little girl with a crush but that was exactly what was happening right at that moment (excluding the little girl part). Later on, they played games, ate street food, got their pictures drawn by a street artist and finally, Namjoon walked Jin home for some unknown reason.

“Thank you, Pres,” Jin said and gave his most dazzling smile. Namjoon chuckled nervously and said that it wasn’t a big deal.

They stood there awkwardly until Jin decided to speak again. “Was this a date?” he asked. Namjoon knitted his eyebrows in confusion and tried to process what the elder had just said. He was about to answer when Jin interrupted. “Coz I really want it to be one.”

Namjoon just stood there, his face now turning weird, too busy taking in Jin’s words to react properly or humanely. “Don’t worry, Pres,” Jin laughed. “I was joking.”

The younger didn’t laugh but he had a dumb look on his face which was beginning to stick whenever he was with Jin recently. They were, however, interrupted by Jin’s ringing phone. Jin sighed, regretting that he didn’t switch off his phone earlier.

“I guess I’ve got to go,” he said, still not allowing Namjoon to speak even a single sentence. “Thanks again so much.” He walked away, with that cute looking mushroom plush in his hand. “Oh, I almost forgot,” he said and turned to the boy on the foot path in front of the lawn.

“One of these days, I’m going to confess to you. Ready yourself, got it, Pres?” Jin said, laughing. And he ran into the house like a child who was eager to open Christmas presents. If he had waited a little longer, he would have heard Namjoon’s reply but he ran in a little too early to see Namjoon break into a satisfied and overjoyed laugh.

Jin squeezed the plush in his arms and squealed. Damn it, Jin he scolded. Pull yourself together. Suddenly a chime from his phone filled the room. It was a text.

He grabbed his phone lazily to check the message. He immediately sat up (with the plush in between his crossed legs) to see that the id was a huge text which read “President Namjoon”. “It’s just school work,” he tried to convince himself. “That’s why he’s texting.”

But the elder couldn’t help but feel giddy. So what if it was related to school work? Wow, Jin shook his head, having a debate with himself. Desperate, are we, Seokjin?

He clicked on the ‘open’ icon and read every word carefully. And he read it again. And again. And again. To make sure that he was sent the correct message because this message had nothing to do with school work.

Jin gritted his teeth excitedly and fell back to the bed deciding a proper reply for the text he had just received. It had to be a good one. After all, he had to answer the question “I was kind of hurt that you didn’t confess to me today. :( When do you plan on confessing? ;) ”. It was cocky and cheeky and overconfident. But Jin didn’t mind and he tapped into his phone.

Jimin walked past the corridors, making way to the men’s room. He had on earphones in both his ears and since there was still time before the first bell rang, he walked casually and slowly.

It had been a peaceful morning so far. No Yoongi to annoy him. He had completed all his works. No teacher was out in search for him and no girls were squealing near his ear. Well, there were some girls but he was too busy listening to songs to care.

“You’re beautiful,” he sang softly and pushed the door to the men’s room open. “Cham gwenchanchi anni uri dul…” Until…

His eyes caught a group of boys in the restroom, circling one person in the middle. The one in the middle seemed shorter than the boys surrounding him and Jimin was half tempted to help until he saw who the one in the middle was the very next second. That tuft of dark hair seemed too familiar.

“Sorry for inte…” Jimin was about to say when one of the boys quickly pulled out his ear piece and dragged him to the center, beside an angry looking Yoongi.

“Why drag this idiot into the fight? He has no involvement whatsoever,” Yoongi said and for once, Jimin agreed to his words. “Exactly, can’t I just go? I won’t report this,” the shorter said, not really scared but in a dreading tone.

“Yah, Min Yoongi,” the one in the middle, who was obviously the leader of the group said. Judging from the way he stood taller than both the victims and from the way he spoke, he was their senior. Oh god, the cockiness of this guy could be smelt from fifty miles away.

“Why do I always hear your name coming out of my girlfriend’s mouth, huh?” he asked, threatening with of eyes. Yoongi shrugged uninterestedly. “Coz I’m hotter than you?” he replied, earning Jimin’s roll of the eyes.

One of the boys tried to hit Yoongi but the leader stopped him with one raise of the hands. Talk about reliving the black and white mafia/ hit men scenes in the movies.

“Look kid,” the leader said, flipping his artificially colored blonde hair dramatically. “I don’t have a thing against you. And I kinda get that you’re popular with the ladies even though you have a boyfriend. But if I hear your name come out of my girlfriend’s mouth again,” he said when Yoongi interrupted impolitely. “Firstly, I don’t give a if you understand my popularity with anyone or not. Secondly, I have no idea who your girlfriend is. Are you sure she’s not imaginary or something? Coz from your looks, I don’t think you’re capable of even getting one.”

Jimin gritted his teeth as he listened. He had almost smiled. That was inappropriate on so many levels.

“And lastly, what the do you mean “I already have a boyfriend”? Are you on drugs or something? Do you see me with a man in my arms?” Yoongi said, raising his left eyebrow. Jimin really couldn’t hold it in anymore. So he let out a small giggle.

“What the ’s so funny?” Yoongi turned to the younger to see a tearing up Jimin. The slightly shorter male beside him was holding in his laughter by covering his mouth tightly with his right hand.

The leader scoffed, getting past the fact that he was completely ignored by the two victims. He, however, perceived the scene of a hysterical Jimin differently. “Oh great, now you’ve made him cry. What kind of a boyfriend are you? First you flirt with others and then now you deny that you’re dating him?”

All of Jimin’s laughter faded immediately because… what the heck did that guy just say?

Yoongi face froze making him look like one of Sadako’s victims from ‘The Ring’. Jimin reacted first by letting out an awkward, high pitched laugh. “Are you saying… he’s…” Jimin pointed at the person beside him. He couldn’t even finish his sentence because it was too… wrong.

Meanwhile, Yoongi tried to laugh it off. But he couldn’t. “What the actual ?” he cursed and touched his smooth cheeks. “I can’t laugh. It’s not even remotely funny.” He turned to the leader in front of him. “Yah, you should never consider being a comedian because you’re not funny at all.”

The boys surrounding them had equally confused looks because of their reactions. Then a loud ringing could be heard from the distance, indicating the first bell.

“You kids need some serious help,” the leader said, still confused. He walked away with the other boys following him. The leader mumbled something about “serious whackos” and “weird people”.

Both Yoongi and Jimin stood in the now empty restroom, feeling too awkward to move a step. The elder of the two sneaked a look at the younger, checking for a reaction. But there was none. So he cleared his throat a little loudly.

“Well,” he said and left, that awkward air still following his trail. Jimin just nodded and stood there, not caring that he would be late for class.

Later that afternoon, Taehyung laughed at a miserable Jimin while Hoseok listened with full attention. Yoongi was nowhere in sight so Jimin took full advantage complaining.

“I mean, they referred to us as boyfriends. How ed up is that?” Both Taehyung and Hoseok knew that Jimin wasn’t the type of person to fling around swear words so casually. So when the baby faced boy swore, things were serious.

“It’s not that bad, is it?” Taehyung said, trying to calm down his hyung. Hoseok, however, was of no help. “You mean the two of you were not dating?” he asked in a loud voice.

Both Taehyung and Jimin now turned to the oldest in the group with bizarre looks on their face. “You mean you thought…” Taehyung began when Hoseok cut in. “So the YoonMin couple isn’t real?” Hoseok asked again. Jimin gave a disgusted, almost scared face, and replied with a crack in his voice, “Jung Hoseok, where is this question coming from?”

“But I thought the two of you had that love-hate relationship going on. It’s on the gossip section of the school papers,” Hoseok said to which both Taehyung and Jimin replied simultaneously, “We have a school paper?”

“Yeah, we do,” Hoseok said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “Our names were in the newspaper?” Jimin cried out. That was it. His life was over.

Jungkook floated alongside Taehyung into the hospital elevator. The small compartment which fitted nine people (and a ghost) at the moment was insufferably quiet. There were three people in white lab coats, two ladies and a man. The rest looked like civilians, visiting people in the hospital.

Taehyung looked carefully at the illuminating buttons as they passed each floor. Ninth floor. That was where uncle Junhong would be at the moment. But his eyes often wavered to the floating ghost beside him. From the looks of it, Jungkook seemed to be excited, finally to be out with Taehyung.

The buttons finally dinged at the deemed floor and the orange haired boy in the school uniform got off (along with his loyal puppy-like ghost friend).

“Right,” Taehyung said and made his way to the floor receptionist. He asked where a Doctor Choi Junhong was and the receptionist pointed him immediately to cabinet down the hall. She had adoring looks and even perked up her lips multiple times in order to attain the male’s attention. Jungkook smirked. He knew far too well that the receptionist didn’t give Taehyung’s uncle’s location just because he was his nephew.

“What are you smirking about?” Taehyung asked, rolling his eyes. But there was a tiny, amused smile forming on his lips. This kid, Jungkook thought, he knows he’s good looking and uses it to his full advantage.

“Nothing,” Jungkook said tunefully and floated ahead of Taehyung.

“Ah, Taehyung,” a middle aged man wished the younger man and let him in as soon as the door pushed open. Jungkook didn’t really listen to the whole conversation because it was the usual relative talk.

How are you? How are your parents? Is anyone sick? And of the like.

So, instead of listening in, Jungkook observed. This Choi Junhong was really tall, like Taehyung had mentioned. But basing from his looks, he seemed no older than twenty five. He had smooth skin (it was really noticeable) and to top it off, he was way too fair. Also, his hair was disheveled and a mess but that didn’t mean that it wasn’t smooth and silky.

Is this even possible? Jungkook wondered. He had never seen such a handsome man before. (Excluding Taehyung, of course) Yet, the said man was not doing anything to show off his beauty. If at all, he was doing a good job at hiding it.

Then a thought hit him. This Choi Junghong person would make a really good model.

Taehyung finally stood up, indicating the end of the conversation. Jungkook overheard some “I’ll visit often” from both the occupants of the room and he noticed the uncle pat Taehyung’s back awkwardly after handing him a bottle of pills for Taehyung’s mom’s allergies.

As they walked out the cubicle, Taehyung whispered with a knowing smirk, “You were checking out my uncle pretty seriously. Could it be you’re a ert for old men?” Jungkook scoffed, not even affected by the accusation. “He just looked like a model, that’s all. He looks a lot like your mom.”

Taehyung smiled obviously taking the statement as a compliment. “Don’t let his looks fool you though. He’s thirty five years old.” Jungkook was perplexed. Was that even possible?

The orange haired male smiled and walked down the hallway, making his way to the elevator. Jungkook followed, still rambling on about how it would be impossible for a man that young looking to be over thirty.

The elevator dinged open and Taehyung hurried to it. From the small compartment walked out a sophisticated looking woman. Both Taehyung and Jungkook wouldn’t have spared her a second glance if she hadn’t been so… well, sophisticated. Taehyung just brushed the woman off and walked into the elevator. Jungkook, however, was a little more observant.

The woman seemed strict and stern. But aside from the cold features, she was beautiful. It wasn’t the kind of beautiful which Jungkook used to describe Taehyung but it was the kind of beautiful in the completely idolizing and respectful and admiring way. And judging from her clothes and accessories, she was from a rich family.

That was all the innocent ghost could manage to deduce from the icy cold aura the woman was giving off. So he turned back to the handsome faced orange haired guy beside him in the elevator, continuing his conversation with him from earlier about Taehyung’s uncle who was a doctor but looked like a model.

The two boys heard a lady’s voice in the distance right before the elevator doors closed. It was soft and kind, definitely belonging to a nurse. But they didn’t deem it important. After all, it wasn’t directed to them.

“Mrs. Jeon,” the nurse said, “Dr. Choi will meet with you shortly.” The woman who represented the very aura of stylish and complicated nodded her head and headed to the stated office.

And the elevator doors closed with a cheerful and lively ding.
