Foreword
The moment in which a seven year old first rides a bike with no training wheels can only be described as triumphant. For most.
For me, it was a complete disaster.
She rides.
She steers into the tree.
The bike falls over; she’s still on it.
She falls.
Her knee is scraped up. Pretty bad.
My knee was bloodied up that day. But I would soon lose a lot more than just skin on my knee.
“Soyeon, honey, it’s gonna be okay. I promise.” My mother was reassuring, kindly encouraging and, with a loving smile, she was trying.
Trying.
Something that I hadn’t done since that day, attempting to ride a bike.
“We’ll just get a Band-Aid and fix you right up!” I was taken into the warmth and comfort of her arms as she embraced me. I started to cry. One can only expect a seven year old to cry after a fall after all.
“You’ll be okay, Soyeon. I promise.”
Today, those last two words sting like hand sanitizer on an open wound. But back then, they comforted me. I stopped crying and hugged my mother tightly, as she took me inside.
