Behind The BookshelfIt was Sunday, about 2 weeks later. I was supposed to take a drive to a city a few hours away so I could pick up a new order of books. My car broke down at the last minute.
No biggie, I just needed to take the bus.
The bus wasn’t very crowded, and I sat down quietly and took out a magazine.
At the first stop, many people boarded, and the bus quickly filled up, leaving only few seats empty. Person after person, the bus loaded. Among the people was Minho.
He saw me and he smiled. I acknowledged him with a slight grin, and went back to reading.
“May I sit here?” Minho’s deep voice startled me.
I looked up, “Of course.”
He smiled and thanked me, then sat. “Where you headed?” He said shyly.
“Just down to Sealy.” I said.
He nodded, then took out a book, opened it, and began reading.
I went back to my magazine.
After a few minutes, he glanced over at me and said “Have you read this?” showing me the title, “JANE EYRE”.
I shook my head. “I usually don’t read books. I’ve heard that one’s good though.”
“Yes, it’s a good story…kind of girly I guess.”
I laughed.
“So, you work at a book store but you don’t read?”
I nodded. “I work a lot, there’s not really time.”
“I see.”
An awkward silence followed, and Minho took out an ipod and began listening so I went back to my magazine.
After a while I heard snoring. Was it him? I looked over at him slowly, trying not to make it obvious. It was. He was sound asleep. It was soon to be my stop, too. I had to wake him up.
Since I didn’t know him too well, it was awkward…
But I tapped his shoulder gently saying, “Excuse me, Minho…”
He groaned and turned over, laying his head on my shoulder.
I looked around frantically. What do I do now…
Slowly I pulled my shoulder out and grabbed his head in my hands so that it wouldn’t fall, then pushed it gently back to his seat.
After trying to tap him again, I realized he was somewhat of a heavy sleeper.
But the bus hit a rock and bounced, and suddenly he was awoken.
“Oh, I’m sorry.” He said, looking at me. “How long was I asleep?”
I shook my head. “I dunno…”
He shrugged. “Well anyways, where are we?”
“Almost to Sealy. Why? Did you miss your stop?”
“Oh, no. I think I did. Well, I guess that means I’m going to have to treat you to coffee. Is that ok?” He looked at me, smiling brightly.
I was taken by surprise. “Oh, sure, thanks.” I said dumbly.
