Hononyms, Synonyms, Antonyms

English 101

Hononyms- words that sound the same (or very similiar, or same spelling) but have different meanings

To, two, too  (they all sound the same to me)

To: preposition word

I gave it to him. We had to go to the ball. The truck went to the carnival.

Too: it either means also or a lot of a quality

I want to go too. The guys were too lame! The school has those too.

Two: 2

Two ice creams sir. Two birds lived on that tree. Two plus two equals four!

Your You're (ok I admitt I switch the 2 out)

Your: it shows the item belonging to you

Can I ride in your car? Is that your dog? Are these yours?

You're: contraction of you are

You're going to the party right? (with) You are going to the party right? (with out) (if you get confused replace it with you are to see if it makes sense)

There, their, they're

There: referring to place

There it is! The dog is there. The house sits there.

Their: it shows a group of people own that item (more than one)

The couple's house is there. (without) Their house is there. (with)

They're: contraction of they are

They are going to move? (with out) They're going to move? (with)

Live live (its how you say it that is different)

live: being alive, exist, a place to stay, act in a cetain way, experience (you say it with the 'i' sound like in pickle)

It lives!!! I live here. She lives music. (<-- expression) My grandma lived through the earthquake.

Live: not pre-recorded (you say it with the 'i' sound from die)

The play was live. Broadway is live.

There are more but I pointed out the ones that get confused a lot.

Synonyms  words that have similiar meaning

if you wanted to write a song and you can't think of a word to rhyme with use a thesaurus

Antonyms: words that have oposite meaning of each other

Using there and here

use there if the place is faraway

The ball went all the way over there!

use here if the place is close.

The neighbors are here!
