Plurals: Do's and Dont's

English 101

Singular- one item or thing

Plural- more than one item

Ok so I find this mistake many times

Do/does and Don't/ doesn't

use do and don't for more than one item or thing.  (plural words only!)

We do like soda. They don't eat meat.

Mark and I do hocky together.

Exception: I do want to go. I don't like that.  Do you like it? (using I, you)

Use does/doesn't for a single item (singular words only)

Sarah does gymnastics.

Mary doesn't like German people.

Does he like me?

It doesn't have to be this way!

Does you like it? I doesn't like it. wrong look at the exception above^

Is/Are

Ok I had this problem for a while.

Is- singular

Are- Plural

They are going to the store. (They is plural)

Mom is buying a pillow. (Mom is singular)

The group is going to practice. (there's only 1 group even though it has multiple people)

The groups are going to practice.

Exceptions: You are running to the store. ( even though you is singular you still use 'are') I am alive. (use am for I)

English can be a pain, I failed a paper on this while everybody else in my class passed with A.

This/that -singular nouns

I did that. Mom saw that. Is this yours? They already saw this magazine. People went to that new skating rink. (it is referring to one item (or noun)

these/those -plural nouns

Can I get a bunch of those gummies? These pants are so cool. These paninis taste good. (all the underlined words are plural words)

Plural words

add an -s at the end of a word to make it plural

clouds, dogs, bottles, pianos

add an -es at the end of words ending with s, z, x, sh, and ch  (sometimes o)

foxes, churches, brushes, classes, buzzes, heroes

words ending with y replace with ies

puppy   puppies pony ponies

sometimes words ending with f or fe replace with ves

calf calves   life lives   proof proves    wife wives   chief chieves

Weird plurals

man men  goose geese   child children   woman women   foot feet   ox oxen   mouse mice   dice die

Words that are plural no matter what!

scissors
 oats

 tongs

 dregs
 trousers  pinchers  bellows  snuffers
 cattle  shears  measles  mumps
 victuals  tweezers  vespers

and pants

Words that are singular no matter what!

gold  silver  wheat  corn
 molasses  copper  sugar  cotton

deer

Possesive words. (they show the owner of the thing)

Put an 's on singular words

The dog's face is so cute.

Exception: geese's mice's (weird plurals)

Put a s' on plural words.

The puppies' faces are so cute.

Possesive words that don't need ' (they already show ownership)

his, her, your, my, their, ours, mine

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________

A/N: If this gets overwhelming at least get down sentence structure (and avoid run ons, and fragmented sentences). Knowing where to put an apostraphe (') for possesive words would be something you shouldn't worry about. I just put it in just in case you wanted to get a good grade from the grammar police.
