Devil

Baby Maybe

Junhee nodded as she sipped her coffee as she sat on Yonghwa's bed.

"And where is it, oppa?"

"Here." Yonghwa handed her a piece of paper. "This is it."

"The famous letter." Junhee started to unfold it, but Yonghwa stopped her.

"No. Only Hyun can read this. Give it to her after I'm..." Yonghwa couldn't get the word out.

"Yes." Junhee nodded.

"Promise you won't read it. I only trust you not to read it and give it to Hyun."

"I promise, oppa. Now get back in bed."

"No, I"m a lot better now. I'm gonna get up and go outside."

"Oppa-"

"I'm going to die sooner or later, it doesn't matter when."

"Oppa, you might faint and die anywhere outside. I'm going outside with you."

"I'm not afraid of death, Junhee. Frankly, I couldn't care less."

"You shouldn't talk that way, oppa!"

"I really wouldn't care. It's just leaving behind the people who care about me..."

"You should be more selfish."

"I don't care. Hyun.... poor Hyun..."

"Oppa, you're not a character in a movie. Those movies end with some ridiculous miracle."

"I'm not like that."

"Exactly. So you should start caring about yourself. I know you oppa. I known you all my life."

"Your point?"

"I know everything about you. You hid under the bed when you were 6 because of a ghost that lived under the bed. You used to turn on all the lights in the hallway because you were scared to go to the bathroom when you were 8."

"Junhee, that has nothing to-"

"Listen oppa. I know you're scared of dying right now, and you're not showing it."

"Maybe I am."

"You know you are, oppa. You hate not knowing things, and that's what death is. You don't know what will happen next until the moment you die."

The doorbell rang twice. "That's Hyun."

Junhee grasped Yonghwa's hand. "Just remember oppa. Make smart choices... the ones that will make you last longer on earth."

Yonghwa laughed and Junhee smiled.

She got up and brushed herself off. "You'll want to get out of your bed now. You don't want to let Seohyun unnie see you like that."

"Oh, smart. Thanks, Junhee."

"You're welcome oppa. Now go get her. You don't want to keep her waiting."

Junhee opened up the door and Seohyun stood there, crying.

"Wh-what?" Yonghwa rushed to Seohyun's side.

Then he saw Seohyun wasn't alone.

"Hey, oppa!" Shinhye said brightly.

"What did you do to her?" Yonghwa said, his voice trembling.

"Oh please, oppa. I didn't do that much."

"Shinhye, I don't want to see your face."

"Don't be like this oppa."

"Seohyun, what happened?"

Seohyun just stared at him with open, staring at Shinhye in fear.

"She hit you."

"..."

"Shinhye, get out. And watch out the next time I see your face. Because..." Yonghwa glared at her.

"This is all your fault, you ugly faced weirdo!" Shinhye yelled. "He was almost mine, then you had to come here and ruin it!"

"I was never yours, Shinhye."

"Oppa, I can't believe you're treating me like this. After all I've done for you..."

"Like hitting the girl I love?"

"...You'll regret this oppa." Shinhye walked off, crying into her arms.

"She deserved it," Yonghwa tried to tell himself.

"Oppa...." Seohyun was still trembling.

"Hey, it's okay now." Yonghwa hugged Seohyun.

"No.. no it's not, oppa."

"Why were you so late, Seohyun? I called you two hours ago."

"I met Shinhye on the way...she.. brought me here...so I can...break up with you...."

"What? That little..."

"She... told me... you are close to dying...and I should leave you..." Seohyun sniffled.

"She's lying."

"But oppa-"

"She's lying! I'm not going to die!" But he seemed to be talking to himself rather than to Hyun.

Seohyun stared at Yonghwa because of this sudden outburst.

"I'm sorry Hyun, it's just a little stressful with everyone pressuring me about.."

"I'm sorry oppa. I brought you a little something."

She handed him a box wrapped with a pretty blue bow. Yonghwa opened it.

It was a ring with a pearl in the middle.

"It's for us..." She held up her hand. It had a matching ring. "I told you we were going to get couple rings."

"Seohyun... I told you I didn't need anything like this..."

"No! Do you even know why I picked pearl?"

"Um..."

Seohyun smiled. "You're cute when you panic."

"Thanks?" Yonghwa said uncertainly.

Seohyun laughed. "It's our birthsone, silly! We were both born in June."

"It's amazing how close our birthdays are together."

"I know, right?"

"Seohyun.... is it too late for you to go back to Kyuhyun?"

"..."

"Because-"

"Yes, oppa. It's way too late. And that's just one of the reasons you can't leave me alone."

"Okay, Hyun." Yonghwa was about to kiss her, but Seohyun stopped him.

"No. It's my turn." She leaned in and kissed him instead.

Yonghwa smiled. Seohyun turned to leave. "Seohyun, aren't you forgetting something?"

Seohyun panicked. "Um...."

She thought for a while then clapped her hands together. "Oh! I love you oppa."

Yonghwa's smile indicated she got the answer right. "I love you too."

The door closed behind Seohyun and Yonghwa was alone once again.

Just like he would be when he died.

I didn't realize how lonely you would be without people in your life.

I didn't realize the big hole that would be there.

I hope there is a afterlife.

Because I don't think I'd be able to spend the rest of eternity alone.

It was two days after Seohyun went to Yonghwa's house.

Seohyun was brushing her hair when her phone rang.

Junhee, it read.

"That's strange, Junhee barely calls me." Seohyun said to herself, and picked up the phone.

"Unnie?" Junhee was crying.

No.

It can't be.

No.

He told her there was a month left.

No!

"Yes, Junhee?" Seohyun's voice was trembling.

"Come quick."

"Why, Junhee?"

"You already know. It's-"

"No! Don't say it out loud!"

She still had hope. Once Junhee said it out loud, it was for sure.

"Unnie-"

"Tell me this is a joke! I spent so little time by his side! I need more time to make things up to him!"

"I'm sorry, unnie. You better come quick. It's Yonghwa oppa... and things aren't looking good."

If I sing you a song

Would you sing along?

Or wait till I"m gone?

Oh how we push and pull

If I give you my heart

would you just play the part

Or tell me it's the start

of something beautiful?
