CH. 9

Playing The Game

"This is the worst date yet," Miyoung complained quietly to herself, arms wrapped around herself for warmth as the rain fell on their heads. "Didn't you even bother checking the weather, stupid?!" she snapped at Kai, clearly irritated.

He turned to her with a sharp glare. "Yah, you act like this is my fault!" he pointed to the sky, indicated he was talking about the rain.

Miyoung stayed quiet, feeling that if she talked-or yelled for that matter- it would take any last bit if warmth she had out of her body. She kept her eyes forward, not wanting to meet Kai's cold, angry gaze.

Kai huffed air as he turned away. 'This girl...' he thought. He glanced once again from the corner of his eye and saw her shaking for warmth, the tip of her nose was pink and her cheeks were read. He hurriedly looked away when she turned her head to face him.

"Where are my glasses?" she demanded.

Kai creased his eyebrows in irritation. "Your glasses?"

She nodded. "That was the deal; I'd go on this 'date' with you if you bought me new glasses."

"Why-"

"You broke them." she stated bluntly, recalling the time in class when they fell off her face and his fat foot crushed her poor, innocent glasses.

Kai remembered what happened clearly, but pretended not to. "I have no clue what you're talking about." he stuck his nose in the air like a snobby little brat.

Miyoung scoffed. "Fine. Whatever." she blew it off. "Sorry for the trouble." she grumbled the last part as she wrapped her arms around herself once again.

Kai eyed Miyoung in irritation as he grabbed her by the elbow and pulled her across the street. After some fidgeting and demanding him to tell her where they were going, Kai pulled Miyoung into a building, the warm air immediately hitting Miyoung's face along with the smell of freshly brewed coffee.

Miyoung took in a big whiff as she sighed dreamily. "I love that smell," she said quietly to herself. She turned to ask Kai why they were there but he was gone, nowhere in sight. 'That left me!' she thought angrily, wide open.

"Jung Miyoung," she heard her name being called, and slowly, she followed where the direction the voice was coming from. In a booth, she saw Kai motioning for her to come sit. Once she sat on the opposite side of him, Kai said, "You make a fool out of yourself." He was looking down at a menu.

Miyoung glared holes through the menu, hoping it would reach Kai's head. "You bet your sweet tea, I do." she mimicked him with a triumphant grin.

Kai lowered the menu and stared at Miyoung with a blank gaze. The longer he stared, the more uncomfortable she grew, and she eventually cleared awkwardly and looked away, slouching in the booth as she avoided Kai's gaze.

His eyes fell back on the menu in search for something to eat, every now and then sneaking a quick glance at Miyoung-who was playing on her phone. Small irritation began to fill in Kai's body as he set his menu down once again. "Don't play games while you're on a date with me!" he snapped, his voice sounding more whiny then he had meant it.

Miyoung's bottom lips stuck out as she looked up at him though her long lashes. "It's not like you're talking to me."

Kai clicked his tongue in thought before he rose from his side of the booth and moved to sit beside her.

"What are you doing?!" she asked in panic, sitting up straight in her seat. "Go back over there!" She pointed to the other side of the booth as he shook his head.

"I like it better right here." he smirked, looking back down at his menu. "Are you hungry?"

She shook her head, crossing her arms across her chest as she slumped in her seat. "No." Her stomach failed her as it growled loudly, causing strange stares from people sitting nearby.

He flickered his eyes from her stomach to her face, chuckling. "I think you're hungry," he set his open menu on the table and slid it in front of Miyoung, gesturing for her to look for something to eat.

Hesitantly, she slightly leaned forward to take a look at the menu, resting her elbow on the table and her cheek on her hand. Miyoung heard distinct footsteps as a small figure stop beside their table. She kept her eyes on the menu but her ears open-she couldn't help it, she was nosy.

"Hi," a girls voice said shyly to Kai, biting her bottom lip. "What are you up to?" Miyoung may not have know much about dating or flirting, but it was evident that this girl was trying to make the moves on Kai, and she tried her hardest to suppress a laugh.

Kai raised a brow at the girl, wondering what was going through her head. She was pretty, but not his type, so he was completely uninterested.

He turned his head to look at Miyoung, grabbing the hand her cheek was resting on-almost making her head hit the table- and intertwining his fingers with hers. "I'm with my girlfriend," he casually said.

Miyoung couldn't help but stare in awe-he made it look so easy to call her his girlfriend. But then again, why wouldn't it be easy for him? He is Kim Jongin, the biggest player in Seoul.

The girl pinked slightly, looking at Miyoung with shocked eyes. "Oh! I'm s-sorry," she bowed apologetically and hurried off, sitting on the other side of the cafe with her back toward them.

Once she was gone, Miyoung stared at her and Kai's hands locked together; her hand for perfectly in his, almost like a puzzle piece. The roughness of his hands felt nice against the smoothness of hers, and it sent her heart racing, merely for the fact that she's never held a guys hand before.

A sigh of relief escaped Kai's chest as he slid down in his seat, releasing Miyoung's hand. "She was annoying," he mumbled under his breath.

Miyoung shot him a look. "How? You barely even talked to her." Who did he think he was to judge somebody without knowing them?! Miyoung couldn't help but wonder how he did it because she knew she wouldn't be able to do that.. Ever. She was raised not to judge without knowing anything about them.

Kai shrugged nonchalantly. "I could just tell," he jabbed his thumb over his shoulder, pointing in the girl's direction. "I know those type of girls."

She scoffed and looked away. "Because you're a man ," she said quietly as she released a big breath of air.

Kai creased his eyebrows as he sat up straight. "A what?" he questioned.

Miyoung flinched at the coldness in his voice as she slowly turned to face him again. She smiled innocently without answering.

Kai scoffed, his lips while thinking his words through carefully. "I'm really tired of you calling me that,"

Miyoung didn't have anything to say back. She just looked down at the table quietly, thinking of a way to change the subject.

When she opened to speak, Kai beat her to the punch. "I'm leaving," he stated frankly, rising from the booth and walking to the cafe door. Miyoung remained in her seat, hesitant on whether to follow or not. She didn't even get to eat, and she was obviously hungry-her stomach sold her out. Her eyes flickered back and forth between the menu and Kai as  he looked at her, motioning for her to follow with a slight nod of his head. "Are you coming?"

She eyed the menu confusedly-weren't they gonna eat?- but quickly nodded, moving from the booth to stand beside him. She placed her hand on the door handle to walk out, but froze when Kai continued to stand there. "Jongin?" she called for his attention.

He looked down at her, pursing his lips. Without a word, he took off his hoodie and shoved it into Miyoung's hands. She looked up at him with a baffled expression.

With that being done, he grabbed her wrist and pulled her out into the freezing rain.

The walk home was silent-aside from cars driving by and other pedestrians talking to each other. Every now and then, however, Kai would catch a glimpse of Miyoung. She was a mystery to him, which he didn't understand at all. She was a nerd, she was innocent, she was quiet around a big group of people. But when she was was with him, she was witty. Confidence oozed from her body, an example being when she started this bet. She was so confident, yet so shy and innocent. How can someone do that? Miyoung could just turn it on and off, like a switch, but the weirdest part was she doesn't even realize she's doing it.

He got a good look at Miyoung just then, and was slightly taken aback. He remembered her with glasses on a couple of days ago, and she looked so young and well, nerdy. Right now, though, she didn't look like that. Without her glasses, she looked mature, and you would've never guessed she was all about studying.

Miyoung glanced at Kai, doing a double take once she saw him staring at her. "What are you looking at?" She brought her hand to her cheek nervously, thinking there was something on her face.

His eyes grew wide as he shook his head violently, clearing his head of his thoughts. Miyoung raised a brow curiously, but let it go. From then on, they walked with their eyes forward, not once looking at the other.

Before they knew it, they were standing on Miyoung's front porch, shivering as the cold air pierced their skin. They stood facing each other, the sound if their chattering teeth filling the silence between one another.

It was evident that they we're awkward, clueless as to what to say or do. Miyoung kept her eyes glued to the ground as she kept wondering what she got herself into. She didn't know a thing about dating, so how was she supposed to make this guy fall for her? Of course, she could always back out of the bet, but that meant hurting her pride, and she couldn't do that. She had brought up the bet with so much confidence in the first place, so now she had to back herself up.

The silence was broken when Kai sighed deeply, his hands shoved inside his pants pockets. "It was nice," He was talking about their "date" in an attempt to make small talk.

Miyoung scoffed and rolled her eyes. "Don't lie," she stated bluntly. "This weather is the worst." she said under her breath quietly.

Kai shrugged nonchalantly. "It happens." There was a small part of him that kind of wished the night would've gone better, but he didn't think much of it.

She nodded in agreement as she pursed her lips. After another short moment of silence, Miyoung pulled her arms out of the jacket sleeves and held the dark hoodie out for Kai to take. "I'm going inside," she said once he took the hoodie. She turned to unlock the front door, listening quietly as Kai's footsteps made their way down the driveway. She slowly turned the doorknob and paused before swinging the door open. "Goodnight, Jongin." she turned to Kai, who was already on the sidewalk in front of her house. Miyoung smiled sweetly, nodding her head a bit before entering her house.

Even after the door was closed, Kai continued to stand where we was. He stared at the house as one of the lights in the rooms flickered on. "Goodnight, Jung Miyoung." he whispered before walking away, making his way to his home.
