Another One, (Un)like Me

Metal Body, Human Soul

Blink. Creak. Squeak. Slam. Groan.

Waking up to the harsh reality… reality that… I’m not a real person.

Clink. Clink. Clink. Wind. Buzz. Creak. Slam.

I don’t know why I have a toothbrush… I don’t need to brush my teeth.

Clink. Clink. Clink. Creak. Clop.

Why am I in the kitchen? I don’t need food.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

“Ah. You’re awake. Come and help me. Your new friend is almost complete!”

“Yes, Creator.”

Monotonous voice. Why does it belong to me?

Clink. Clink. Clink. Creak. Blink.

“Hand me that screwdriver, dear.”

Clink. Clink. Shift. Buzz. Clop. Cling.

“Thank you.”

Clink. Clink. Slam. Shift.

I have always wished to be human. Or in the least, treated like a human.

Clink. Squeak. Groan.

But my attempts to show that I have emotions to my creator have failed… and he has tossed me aside, treated me like a tool.

Shift. Shing. Clink.

He was not satisfied with me in the beginning. I was too simple of a robot. Too much like a prototype.

Buzz. Zap. Slam. Cling.

Yet, he does not know that I am very much like a human on the inside.

Clink. Ping. Slam. Clop.

Creator… will you be satisfied with this robot? Or is it just another experimentation that you will eventually toss to the side like you did to me? Will you make this machine another assistant or servant?

“Would you flip that switch over there?”

Clink. Clink. Clink. Groan. Squeak. Shift. Cling.

“No, no. The second one to the left.”

Shift. Cling.

“Ah. Perfect. Go on.”

Ping. Shift. Clink. Clink. Clink. Slam. Shift. Clop.

This poor new creation. I hope that Creator will treasure you, unlike me. I hope that you do not suffer the loneliness that I often feel. I pray for him to be satisfied with you and not to treat you as he treats me.

“He is almost complete! Fetch me a glass of water, though. It’s awfully hot in here!”

Creak. Groan. Nod. Nod. Creak. Clink. Clink. Clink.

The kitchen again…

Clink. Clink. Cling. Creak. Slam. Flick. Shhhh. Flick. Clink. Clink. Clink.

“Thank you. Now, please flip the switch again. I no longer need that light.”

“Yes, Creator.”

Clink. Clink. Clink. Cling. Shift. Squeak. Clink. Clink. Slam.

Please… Let this one robot satisfy my creator. Do not let another robot go through the internal emotions of sadness, loneliness, and depression that I do.

Squeak. Buzz.

The male robot laid still, his internal systems being worked on as a final touch. Creator was nearly done and only had to work on polishing before the boy was done.

Cling. Buzz. Shift. Ping. Slam.

“It’s time for the awakening. Will you bring the equipment over here?”

“Of course, creator.”

Clink. Clink. Clink. Clink. Shift. Screech. Push. Shing. Slam. Screech.

“I must make this cart more quiet. Please assist me in that tomorrow.”

“Yes, Creator.”

Shift. Clink. Clink. Clop. Slam. Shift. Squeak. Groan.

I watched as he attached several wires to the metal boy, making sure each one was fastened securely.

In the flick of a switch, there was a long buzzing sound.

Ping!

“Ah, he is ready. Help me prop his body up so that I can reach the switch.”

I carefully approached the body of the robot, the first time I was allowed to touch the piece of machinery.

Pulling up the body, I realized just how much taller this robot was made compared to me.

My creator walked to stand behind the body, quickly opening a small door to a tiny switch, flipping it to ‘on’.

After closing the small door, a whirring sound could be heard and in a second, the metal eyelids slid up to reveal a disturbingly bright blue hue.

“Welcome! Oh, excellent. I am your creator and please call me so. This will be your maid and assistant.”

The robot seemed confused and slowly stumbled off the metal bed. Unlike my limbs and joints, he moved silently; even stepping down onto the ground barely made a sound. He seemed surprised at the sudden good treatment he was given.

“Ah, I must think of a good name for you… Perhaps… Luhan. Yes! Luhan, that will be your name.” Creator smiled happily at him before proceeding.

That was how I was treated at first. Pampered to my heart’s content until he realized that I was nothing but the simplest form of a robot.

“Come! Let me show you around a bit.”

The robot simply followed, moving fluidly behind creator. His head turned to look at me, eyes mechanical, but blue with curiosity, before turning away.

Perhaps… he will be good enough for Creator so that he will not suffer what I do.

Thanks for this story. My friend is a big fan of Luhan. I'll show it to her. She will be overjoyed.

Chapter 10: This was certainly an interesting read. I never know what to expect with OCs but this was a nice surprise because she was a robot and therefore in new territory to read. I additionally wasn't sure how Luhan was going to fit in either until I got to the end of the first chapter and things clicked into place. While you give a fair bit of description to Luhan throughout the story, I would have liked to have seen more details about how Hana and the Creator looked. Other than that, it was very interesting to see the way they developed over time.

I must admit that I pitied Hana more than anything. And Luhan's behavior was curious to me since I feel like we didn't get to see many of the behind the scenes interactions that allowed him to become closer to her. I know it happened because of how they interact throughout but I missed the moments other than his brief questioning periods (and the gifts). It was still sweet regardless, since the whole idea of robots having emotions and falling in love is just wonderful anyway. ;)

I especially enjoyed the twist at the end, even if I'm not entirely sure how it came about. Based on everything Hana said/thought about the Creator led me to believe one thing about him and then it changed. But such is life I suppose.

I was however left with a few questions by the end. One of which was the significance of the eye colors. Were they based on mood ring colors by chance? And why wouldn't the Creator be able to explain that since he is the one that programmed Luhan in the first place? I was also curious about how Hana came to be aware at all. The story says she wasn't supposed to initially but she does (apparently) and I'm not sure how the Creator could miss that discrepancy. >.> Or why he would maintain such a facade throughout when he was finally convinced otherwise. You gave a reason but it didn't feel like a strong reason. Does that make sense?

But anyway. I am glad you gave them a happy ending...
