Prologue
Crying in the rain, she looks at the tall and handsome figure that is walking away from her. It’s the boy she’s always loved.
It’s her 19th birthday- one of the best days of any girl’s life. She’s surrounded by her friends as she dances the night away. What worries could she possibly have? University is due to start in a few weeks and it’s a course she knows she’ll love. She’s making the most of her summer break. Everything should have been perfect. Her childhood-sweetheart-now-turned-boyfriend asks her to step outside for just a moment. She smiles, thinking he wants a sneaky kiss or perhaps something more. She couldn’t be any more wrong.
‘I don’t like you anymore’ he says
She chokes up. ‘What?’
‘You heard me. I don’t like you anymore.’
‘Are you br-breaking up with me?’
He nods solemnly, his face like stone. She’s never seen him look so cold. It’s as if the kind and compassionate person she’s always known has been taken over.
‘You chose my birthday of all days to break up with me?!’ she screeches into the night
Her guests come out including her best friend, Oh Nari, and her boyfriend. All her friends come out in their couples. Everyone is staring as the girl is crying.
‘Yukwon, you’re an , really’ says your best friend’s boyfriend
Your best friend nudges her boyfriend lightly. ‘Hey, you shouldn’t say that in front of Dahye’
He smirks. ‘Why not? Go ahead. Say what you like. I don’t care about her or how she feels. She isn’t my girlfriend anymore.’
She sobs, not caring about the mascara running down her face. She doesn’t care that all her friends can see her like this. She’s embarrassed but there’s nothing she can do. Her best friend takes her boyfriend’s blazer and puts it around her shoulders. She’s getting wet from standing in the rain and she knows she’ll be ill for weeks but she can’t leave. She stands there, unable to take in the situation.
‘I just don’t like you anymore so let’s separate.’
5 excruciating minutes later, he is walking away from the restaurant her party was being held at. His face is stinging from the slap she’s served to him. He knows he deserves it and he laughs loud enough for her to hear. Her heart hurts more than ever.
She never sees him again. She drives to his house for weeks but he’s moved. He’s withdrawn his place from his university. All records have been destroyed. She doesn’t know where he’s gone. He’s disappeared completely.
In time, she stops looking for him. Nari begs her to be sane again. Her behaviour is scaring her.
'Just forget about him, Dahye. Forgive and forget. Please...'
She stops going to his favourite hang-out spots in the hopes of trying to see him again. She stops chasing after him but she never forgot about him and she most definitely never forgave.
