Chapter Eleven

Playing With Fire

Recap

In a moment of shock, Hailey dropped the phone from her hands. She quickly tried to pick it up, but Sungyeol was one step ahead of her. Hailey’s eyes widened. If Sungyeol saw who was calling, everything would be over.

She would be exposed!

“Why isn’t she picking up?” Jongup said eagerly.

“I’m sorry but please, don’t use your phone at the hospital.” A nurse commented.

“This is important though.” He muttered to himself and didn’t realize the nurse had overheard him.

The nurse shook her head and sighed, “Well, please turn your phone off after the call”

Jongup nodded. Hailey was still refusing to pick up. “Come on Hailey.”

His call was directed to her voicemail and Jongup closed his eyes in disappointment. He walked over to Daehyun and shook his shoulders gently. “Daehyun-ah, It’s me Jongup! Daehyun-ah,”

Daehyun gave him a blank look. “I’m sorry, but I don’t… I don’t know who you are.”

Jongup ran his hands through his hair. “This can’t be happening.”

A doctor walked in and Jongup immediately rushed over to him. “Doctor. What happened? It seems he can’t remember anyone.”

The doctor gave him a sorrowful look, “The impact of the hit to his head was quite strong. It has affected the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. This can result to the disturbance and inability to recall information.”

Jongup blinked a few times, letting the doctor’s words absorb and sink in. “So you’re saying that…”

The doctor sighed and took off his glasses. “He has amnesia.”

“Ah I’ll take that.” Hailey said abruptly and leaped forward with her eyes fixed on her target. Her phone.

She managed to cover the surface of the phone with one hand and snatch it away, leaving Sungyeol dumbfounded. She quickly cancelled her call and turned the phone off. Hiding the phone behind her, she let out a nervous laugh.

“So those advertising companies sure are annoying aren’t they?” Hailey said trying to act but was clearly failing.

“Right.” Sungyeol said disbelievingly. “Pass me your phone.”

“Why…? It’s not like it’s very important or anything.”

Sungyeol gave Hailey an icy glare. As cold as his gaze was, Hailey couldn’t help but be mesmerized. The effect of his eyes hasn’t changed since the first time she met him. Hailey gulped. She surreptitiously switched her phone with the ‘safe’ phone which was conveniently located in her back jean pocket. Thank goodness I keep both on me.

She shyly handed it over and Sungyeol immediately took it away from her. He unlocked the screen. Hailey watched closely, examining every twitch in his facial expressions. His face was still when suddenly his eyes widened, lips parted, revealing the darkness inside his mouth, and his eyebrows shoot up. He was definitely in a state of shock.

No! Hailey thought, What if I didn’t switch it correctly? Panic overwhelmed her entire body.

“You!”

Hailey jumped slightly at his sudden outburst. Hailey bit her lip. “It’s not what it looks like. I swear.”

Sungyeol started pointing to her and then back to the direction of the phone continuously. Hailey was now completely frightened. Fear slipping out of every single pore on her skin.

“I’m sor – “

“This is genius!” Sungyeol suddenly cried, a slight smile forming on his face.

“What?” Hailey said and ran over to see what caused the cold Sungyeol to smile. Her eyes widened when she saw the background picture. It was one of those distorted effects that warped your faces. Hailey stared in amazement; it was one she had taken with Jongup a few years back.

Realisation then hit her. Jongup! She took a worrying glace at the picture once again. It was hardly recognisable as his face was pushed and twisted. Hailey mentally exhaled a sigh of relief.

“Is that really you on the left?” Sungyeol asked.

“It’s just an app.” Hailey said and grabbed her phone back. She was glad that was over. “You must be tired. We should both get some rest.” She suggested and all Sungyeol could do was nod and snicker. Talk about sudden mood change. Hailey thought to herself as she rolled her eyes discreetly.

Sungyeol had walked over to turn the light off. Hailey waited until he slid himself underneath his blankets before she tried to find a good hiding spot for her second phone, in the end she hid it under her pillow, hoping it would be the safest spot… for now.

Morning had arrived way too quickly. It was time to wake up but Sungyeol and Hailey were still sleeping in their rooms. Fighting the sunlight, Hailey grabbed her blanket and pulled it over her head. She was just about to fall asleep again when she heard heavy footsteps coming towards the room. She slowly pulled the blanket down and her eyes fluttered open, peering over her bed. At that moment, the door flew open and Sunggyu came rushing in panting.

“We. FBI. Go. NOW!” He said in between breaths.

Hailey didn’t quite understand what he was on about. He didn’t exactly speak in complete sentences.

“HURRY UP! GET UP YOU TWO!” He yelled. Now being impatient and pulling the sheets off Sungyeol. Sungyeol let out a groan.

“What is it?” He said sleepily.

Sunggyu bent down and semi-shouted in his face. “The FBI is here!”

Sungyeol immediately sat up. Jumped out of bed and turned to look at Hailey who was totally confused and unaware of the situation.

“Get up. Follow Sunggyu and make sure you don’t leave the premises.” Sungyeol ordered as he put on a black leather jacket.

Hailey did as she was told and walked after Sunggyu out of the room. Sunggyu lead them to the large hall again, but this time, countless tables and chairs were placed for the members to sit in groups. It looked like guests sitting down at a wedding hall–minus the wedding, the decorations, and the formal wear.

Hailey took a seat beside Sunggyu and scanned the room. Min wasn’t there and neither was Sungyeol.

The FBI flashed his badge in front of Sungyeol. “I’m Yongguk, the commander in chief and we are suspecting your gang to have illegally obtained drugs hiding inside. Let us through.”

Sungyeol looked at the police in front of him and smirked. He whipped his dark hair out of his eyes and glanced over at Min standing next to him.

“We have a search warrant, so move.”

Min nodded her head slightly towards Sunggyeol and he stepped to one side. Yongguk walked straight past him and managed the bump his shoulder so he would get out of his way. This caused Sungyeol to rise with anger but he held it in. Not wanting to cause trouble.

Sungyeol and Min waited until the group of about seven policemen entered and then followed closely behind.

“Ok guys, look through thoroughly! Make sure you check every crack.” Yongguk’s deep voice boomed. “You, AC773, come with me.”

Sungyeol watched as a female with short hair looked up and responded.

“Yes, Sir.” She saluted and quickly rushed over, “It’s Chunhei,” she muttered to herself.

Sungyeol observed the other FBI with his arms crossed over his chest. They sure were handling their furniture and belongings roughly.

“Are the others gathered together?” Min whispered and Sungyeol had to lower his head to hear her.

“Yeah, they should be.” He replied.

Yongguk and Chunhei made their way out of the building and spotted a roof peeking over some trees.

“I think we should go check that out.” Yongguk suggested.

“Do you think it belongs to Fire though?” Chunhei asked.

“AC773, do you know how many secret hiding spots a gang could have?”

Chunhei was about to answer with a smartass comment but she decided maybe that wasn’t a good idea, and kept silent. They pushed their way through branches and grape vines, finally reaching the sliding door entrance to the building.

Inside the building, Sunggyu could hear the snapping of branches, he immediately stood up and held his finger to his mouth. Everyone stopped talking and became silent. Hailey couldn’t help but be amazed at how cooperative and organized everyone was, as if they’ve had plenty of practice in the past.

Hailey watched as a member from each table took out a packet of cards and began to play. Was this some kind of diversion? She asked herself as Sunggyu sat back down and joined in.

“Is anybody in there?” Chunhei called from outside as she banged her fists on the door.

“AC773, don’t be stupid. Do you think they’re going to respond?” Yongguk dictated as he placed his hand on the handle. “We’re going in.”

He quickly slid the door open and his eyes widened.

The members inside immediately stood up. Their eyes fixed on the two intruders.

Yongguk cleared his throat and held his badge above his head. “FBI, we’re here to search this place. So if I were you, I would co-operate and make things easier.”

Yongguk and Chunhei were clearly outnumbered. There were only two of them and about a hundred gangsters, prepared to defend their territory. Surprisingly, there wasn’t much controversy and the gang members all moved to one side.

“Search all you want. We have nothing to hide.” A voice called out from the crowd, followed by everyone responding with a spirited “Yeah!”

Yongguk raised an eyebrow. “Good.” He turned to Chunhei and nodded. “Let’s go AC773.”

Chunhei followed behind and scanned the hall. There were so many members! She didn’t expect to see this much.

Hailey peered over the heads of others to see just who was crazy enough to enter into a room with a hundred of their enemies and one exit. There would be no escape if the gang members decided to jump them. She finally got a glimpse of them. The male was sturdy, his facial features fitting for a scary leader. Hailey moved her gaze to the female next to him. Hailey immediately looked away to hide her face when she realised who she had just recognized.

“What is she doing here?” She said quietly and immediately turned around so she could go deeper into the crowd.

“You and you, spread out!” Yongguk demanded and separated his hands to gesture the direction of movement.

The group split in two and unfortunately, it revealed Hailey who was quickly walking with her back facing the FBI.

“You, the one walking. Stop. Turn around.” Yongguk commanded.

Hailey didn’t realise the comment was directed at her and continued her actions.

“I said stop!”

A member nudged Hailey and tilted his head forward. Hailey pointed to herself and the member nodded. She gulped. Chunhei was standing right there! She immediately changed her thought about the FBI being stupid. She was the stupid one. If Chunhei recognised her, not only would that be extremely troublesome but since everyone in Fire was in the room, even the police wouldn’t be able to save her.

She bit her lip. Everything that happens in the next few minutes might be– her very last.

Chapter 17: Oh, wow. This was just so sweet! I loved it! But now that Fire is there, what's going to happen? Will Jongup throw Sungyeol out to them? Hailey wouldn't let that happen. And what do you mean it was the last time they would be together? I sense sad foreshadowing -the kind that leads to someone dying. I don't want anyone to die! Well, except maybe Min...
Anyway, loved the chapter! Welcome back! I look forward to more :)
