Just the Beginning

Behind the Mask

After having so many guns pointed at him for accidentally walking into the middle of a drug deal being made or accidentally walking into a store when someone was robbing it he was used to it, so he wasn't so sure why this time it surprised him. Maybe it was the intensity of the man's eyes that was on the other end of the gun, maybe it was the fact that it was pointed at his heart, or maybe it was the badge that hung around his neck and the bullet proof vest that he wore that had the letters F.B.I. printed in large, bold letters across it.

He held his hands over his head as he eyes watched as the other agents take care of the drug dealers that had gathered in the abandoned warehouse. He wasn't exactly sure how he ended up in that place, but most of the places he ended up in were places that he had no clue how he got there. His mind wandered a lot and all of the dangerous situations that he found himself in were due to that absent-minded nature. What he found himself in now was no exception.

His heart almost stopped when a new voice called for the man who pointed a gun at him, his ears not registering the voice but his heartbeat slowed as the other man lowered his gun and looked in a different direction. He kept his hands in the air just in case the other man changed his mind and pointed the gun at him once more.

"Seung," a familiar voice traveled to his ears, "Sorry about him, Jun Hyung just transfered over to our division." Doo Joon came walking towards him with an amused look on his face, "You can drop your hands now, Seung." His cheeks flushed a bit in embarrassment as his hand fell to his side.

"Sorry, but I've never actually had a gun pointed at my chest by a cop," Hyun Seung said as he let his eyes rest on Doo Joon, "Let alone one who looked like he wanted to kill me."

"He wouldn't without my say so," Doo Joon assured him, "He's apparently one of the best but got sent to my squad for some reason or another."

"That's a very vague reason for him being sent over to your squad," Hyun Seung said as Jun Hyung walked away, "For all you know he has attitude problems or something like that." Doo Joon just shrugged his shoulders before turning to watch as his men finish up their job.

Once all the commotion was over and the officers had taken care of all the drug dealers in the warehouse were taken away Hyun Seung found himself, once again, being drove home by Doo Joon. They didn't speak much in the car but that wasn't rare, their rides together rarely included words. They had been in this kind of situation so many times before that they sank into a compatible and comfortable silence whenever they were alone together. None of the awkwardness that was suspected from a cop and a civilian relationship such as theirs was present. They somehow never had an awkward moment, even when surrounded by the silence.

Once they stopped in front of Hyun Seung's apartment complex they said their goodbyes and he watched as Doo Joon's car faded off into the distance. Once he was sure the other was gone he went inside of the building and headed straight for his mailbox, pulling his key from the bag that hung loosely at his side and pulling out the mail that he hadn't checked for weeks. He quickly flipped through the standard bills and random coupon offerings that he usually got in the mail before his hand froze while holding an envelope. His eyes widened in shock and surprise though anyone watching him wouldn't understand his reason.

The envelope that he held in his hands looked like any other envelope, his name was handwritten on the top along with his address. The only thing that a normal person would have found strange is that the sender didn't write their address or name down on the envelope but Hyun Seung didn't need it to know who the letter was from. He quickly looked up and around the empty lobby, he couldn't help but to wonder if the person who sent the letter was watching him now.

Everything around him felt the same but, now with the envelope in his hand, he no longer felt safe. He stuffed the mail into his bag before quickly heading towards the elevator, pressing the button repeatedly; willing it to arrive faster. Once it did he quickly entered and pressed the button for the fourth floor several times before the doors finally closed and the elevator started to move. He squeezed the strap of his bag with both of his hands, twisting it in his hands as his eyes watched the numbers rise.

Once on his floor he quickly rushed out and towards his door, it was located on the furthest end of the hallway. In his haste he somehow managed to pull his key from his bag and open his door. He still had enough reasoning in his mind to close the door quietly behind him instead of slamming it like he originally had planned, he didn't want the neighbors complaining. With the single envelope that he had in his bag, he had enough on his plate.

He clicked the lock closed before quickly turning around and heading towards the living room, turning on every light as he walked. He dropped his bag on the small couch before searching his apartment, tossing everything. He needed to find out how the sender of the letter, that still sat in his bag, found out where he lived. They had cut off all ties with each other after Hyun Seung found out the truth, he had to sneak out in the middle of the night in order to escape the other's grasp. It had been three years since he had gotten away, three years without any hint that the other had found him. He wondered why today was the day that everything had to change.

He found nothing after tossing his apartment, but that simple fact didn't calm his nerves. He quickly went to the kitchen and grabbed a medium sized glass bowl and a lighter from one of the drawers before heading back to his living room. He placed the bowl on his small coffee table with the lighter next to it before turning his attention to his bag. He quickly pulled out all the mail and placed it on his bag. Shifting through the clutter of paper until he found the envelope once more. He was hesitant to touch it, the irrational part of his mind told him that if he touched it the sender would find out more about his life. He stared at it for a few minutes before rational thought took over.

Picking up the envelope, he stared at it for a few seconds with a frown on his face before placing it the bowl. He didn't even send it a second glance as he picked up the lighter, it took him a few tries to get a flame but once he did he put the flame to the envelope and watched as it was slowly engulfed in the flames.

Pulling his knees up to his chest, he watched as the flames died and left nothing but ash as a reminder of the letter. Sleep tugged at his subconscious and the rational part of him told him to sleep, that nothing bad was going to happen, but the irrational part told him that he was being watched, that sleeping was no longer an option. Though he had wanted to follow the rational part of his mind he had ended up following his irrational thoughts. Just sitting alone in his brightly lit living room while staring at the ashes.

Morning had come before sleep had the chance to take him under. He let his legs slowly fall from the position that he held them in the whole night, his muscles screaming in protest from the simple movement. He sat there for a few minutes as he let the blood flow return to normal in his legs, rubbing the tiredness from his eyes with the back of his hands. It took a few minutes for him to finally stand from the couch, stumbling a bit from the movement on his tired limbs.

xXxXxXx

A few days had passed and Hyun Seung hadn't received anymore letters or had any random dangerous situations, he more aware of his surroundings then he had ever been before. The past few days where so much more different then his normal routine, he was one to randomly hang out with his friends but for the past few days he's been a loner. His friends called him but he never answered, the irrational part of his mind convincing him that they had something to do with the envelope that showed up in the mail, even though no one he knew now knew anything about his past.

He was standing behind the counter at the coffee shop while a customer ordered the usual black coffee with a muffin. When he was at work that was the only time that he actually talked to people, even though he rather avoid the socializing. He had rather be lost in his own thoughts without the voices of others throwing his thoughts into a worse mess then it already was in, he was annoyed with the whole situation.

It was finally time for his hour long break when a mailman walked up to the counter. He just cocked his eyebrow at the man as he dug through his bag looking for something.

"Jang Hyun Seung?" He nodded and the man pulled a paper from his bag and handed to him, tipping his head at Hyun Seung before leaving. He stared at the man's back for a couple of seconds before turning his eyes down to the single piece of paper in his hand. He flipped it around in the palm of his hand as he headed back into the break room, nothing was written on the outside. He frowned at that, how did the mailman know that the letter was for him if there was no information on the outside. He frowned as he pulled the flaps of the paper up so he could see the inside.

You know buring my message before reading it was something you shouldn't have done. The familiar handwriting stared up at him and he had to grab a hold of a nearby chair to keep him from letting his legs fall from under him. The irrational part of his mind wasn't as irrational as he originally thought, the other was watching him. The hand that held the paper shook a bit as he stared at the single sentence. At that moment he knew that he couldn't handle this alone.

He kept the paper in his hand as he pulled his cell phone from his pocket and dialed a number that used to be used so much that, in the past, it was the first number on his speed dial. With a shaky hand he held the phone to his ear, his heart dropping a bit with every ring that passed without an answer.

After the third ring someone had finally picked up and the sound of the voice made all the stress that Hyun Seung had been holding just wash away. "He found me," he said to the man on the other line.

"Hyun Seung," the other man's voice was barely above a whisper with disbelief, "You're still alive?"

"Alive and well, Dong Woon," he said and for the first time in days he smiled, "But I'm really not sure how long I'll be this way."

"Did something happen?"

"He found me," he repeated his first words and was greeted with silence after a sharp intake of breath. Hyun Seung waited for Dong Woon to think of the simple words that he had said and the wait felt like hours, even though in reality it was only a few minutes.

"Has he approached you," Dong Woon asked.

"No," Hyun Seung sounded shaky even to his own ears, "He's started sending me letters a few days ago. I didn't open the first one, I just burned it in the fire so I could forget about it and a second one came today saying that I shouldn't have burned the letter without reading it...he's watching me."

"We all thought he had killed you for knowing too much," Dong Woon said with a sigh, "We thought that you were dead for these pass three years and that's why he had been laying low. Now I know it's because he was looking for you."

"So you know nothing new since the time I left?"

"Nothing," another sigh traveled through the line, "Everybody but Yo Seob and I had completely given up on the case. Does anyone around you know about the situation?"

"No. I started my life over with a clean slate and haven't really made any friends that I would trust that bit of information with, though I do have some friends in the F.B.I. for reasons to complicated to explain over the phone..."

"Have you informed them," Dong Woon cut him off.

"No," Hyun Seung's voice became lower with each word, "I thought that I had successfully put that behind me a month after my escape."

"How did you get out of that place without being caught?"

"Several days of planning and learning the shifts of the guards..."

"And you didn't inform us at the C.I.A. because?"

"He had all sorts of people under his payroll," Hyun Seung pouted as if Dong Woon could see him through the phone, "I didn't want to take the chance that he found out my plans before I got to do anything. He would have done something that's worst then death..."

"Then why not just tell Yo Seob or me," he asked after a few moments of silence.

"I didn't know if he was tapping the phones or not," he said quietly, "And I didn't trust you guys one hundred percent back then..." Another sigh was heard through the line but no words were said for several seconds.

"Where do you live now? Yo Seob and I will go over there and do what we can to help."

"Will the C.I.A. let you do that," Hyun Seung asked after telling Dong Woon his new address and how to get there.

"Most likely not, but there's an easy way to take care of that."

"How?"

"We say that we had a break of the case thanks to the F.B.I. and we're heading out to help them."

"So you're going to lie to them?"

"What they don't know won't hurt them," Hyun Seung could hear Dong Woon's smile through the phone, "Anyways after protecting you for so many years and then thinking you died to only find out your alive so many years later, your protection is much more important then the boring things we have to take care of here at the C.I.A."

"How long will it take you to get here?"

"A couple of days at the most," Dong Woon said, "Just remember to keep your guard up."

"I will," Hyun Seung said and then they hung up with each other. He let his eyes rest on the paper in front of his hand for a second before he looked at the time on his phone. His hour break already passed. He sighed as he stood and put his phone back in his pocket, he didn't get to relax as he had originally planned to.

As he walked out of the break room he folded the paper and placed it in his pocket with his phone, he planned on burning it when he got home.
