Chapter 1: Memories

Ambiguous Relationship

Yang mama: Rainie, I’ll be working for the Yan’s family from now on so you will have to come here with me after school. Is that ok?”

Rainie nodded without saying a word; she was never a shy girl but the huge house in front of her was very intimidating.

As soon as Yang mama and Rainie stepped in the door a little boy ran up to them: hey, do you want to play with me in the yard?

Rainie quickly hid behind her mother and eyed the boy with suspicion. He didn’t move or say another word. He just stood there with his arms out-stretched, waiting for her to respond.

Yang mama : Rainie, this is Aaron. Mommy will be his nanny from now on.

Rainie: oh…ok, I guess I’ll play with you.

Aaron’s little lips curled up and his big round eyes became the shape of a crescent moon. Rainie like the way he smiled at her, she smiled too. She had no idea that this will be the smile she will cherish for the rest of her life.

Aaron whispered before he ran off: wooo… you look really cute when you smile.

Soon they became best friends and they would routinely play together everyday. After Aaron became too old for a nanny, he insists that Yang mama become their house keeper. Then one day, Rainie and Yang mama arrived at the house as usual but to her surprise, Aaron was not there to greet her.

Rainie wondered through the house looking for him and finally found him hiding in his room. He was hiding in the corner with his head buried underneath piles of pillow.

Rainie: Aaron, is everything ok?

Aaron looked up; without a word he grabbed her hand and dashed out the door.

Yang mama saw them from the corner of her eyes: where are you kids going? It’s almost dinner time?

Aaron tightened his grip. If he had the choice, he would never let her go.

Rainie felt his grip tighten on her hand: Aaron, where are you taking me?

He didn’t stop until they were at the feet of Yang Ming Mountain: Somewhere there's someone who dreams of your smile, and finds in your presence that life is worth while.
So when you are lonely, remember its true somebody somewhere is thinking of you. Aaron recited slowly to both Rainie and himself.

Rainie: Aaron, why are you acting so strange today? I have no idea what you are talking about?

Aaron smiled; he didn’t expect her to understand: It’s ok, you will one day. Just remember what I said and promise me that you’ll always remember me.

Rainie nodded reluctantly.

Arron continued, still trying to catch his breath: Rainie, I must go now but I want you to have this

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a beautiful necklace. It was made of white crystals with a four leaf clover imbedded in the middle.

Aaron put the bracelet in her hand: “do you know why four leaf clovers are so special?”

Rainie shook her head.

They took a seat on the curb before Aaron continued: the first leaf of the clover symbolizes wish, the second one is hope, and the third one is happiness.

Rainie: then what about the 4th?

Aaron paused and looked up at her: the 4th leaf represents true love. Therefore if you are lucky enough to find it then you will be blessed with true love.

Rainie examined the bracelet carefully: so you are giving your true love to me?

Aaron stood up so she wouldn’t see how his face just turned bright red: yes, I want you to keep it because I am not gonna give it to anyone else.

It has been almost ten years since the day he give her the bracelet; the day before he moved to U.S. with his family. She applied to “Hua Gang” School for the Entertainment Industry because of their promise to attend the school together. She became a singer because he said he liked her voice. For 6 years, she struggled in the business but she refused to quit. This is her way of telling him that she still remembers their promise; she still remembers him.

The boy that taught her how to grow up

The boy that taught her how to love

He was in her life a long time ago and then disappeared

But she refuses to believe that he was an angel

He's just an ordinary boy that belongs to this ordinary world

Therefore she will wait for him knowing that one day he will return

The boy that will return and teach her everything he learned

Author’s note: I know Yan Ya Lun is not Aaron’s real name but to keep things simple I am using that from the beginning. So this will explain why Rainie does not know him as Ya Lun later. Hope you enjoy the reading, please comment =)
