Ch. 7

Husband or stranger?

The camp is busier today. Prisoners work like everyday, but the soldiers are cleaning up the whole camp. Every mess and dead body must disappear because Park Leeteuk, an inspector of labor camps is going to arrive. Major Park often travels around the country and visits the labor camps because the leader wants to know how well are the prisoners working and how are the camps fulfilling their task and norms. Park Leeteuk knew Siwon and he is shocked when he is walking in front of the lines of prisoners and recognized Yesung.

Yesung is staring at the ground under his bare feet and hopes that no one will notice him. If a guard turns their attention to a prisoner it never means anything good. Usually it means that the prisoner is dragged away to be beaten up just for fun. Yesung sees that a pair of leather brown shoes stopped right in front of him and gulped. This isn’t good.

Leeteuk can clearly see that Yesung’s spine must be damaged. Due to the hard work in coal mine Yesung developed scoliosis and his spine is starting to bend in a weird direction. Leeteuk remembered how jealous he felt when Siwon married the beautiful young man and now only the shadow of old Yesung is standing in front of him. Leeteuk knows that he shouldn’t feel sorry for Yesung, after all he betrayed their county and leader. But still, Leeteuk wants to help him somehow.

Leeteuk walked to the commander and told him to bring the prisoner in camp headquarters. The fat man widely smiled and bowed to the major. Leeteuk knows about the habit of using prisoners as slaves, but what can he do? These camps aren’t supposed to be nice. Leeteuk waits in an office and watches the prisoners leaving the huge yard and going back to work. Two guards bring Yesung who still stares at the floor. He recognized Leeteuk as soon as he got out of the car, but he doesn’t know why he wants to speak with him. Maybe that Leeteuk is just happy from seeing Yesung like this. They are standing there for a few silent minutes until Leeteuk gently grabs Yesung’s small chin in his hand and raised his head up. Yesung casts his eyes away, but can’t stop tears from escaping his eyes. Only Leeteuk can answer his question. Did Siwon really betray their country?

“Is it true?”

Leeteuk can’t stand the sad eyes which are watching him with a tiny bit of hope. They have evidences, moreover Siwon ran away so it is clear that he was a spy. Leeteuk silently nodded and Yesung bursts into tears. He was hoping that this whole thing is a mistake, he believed that Siwon will appear and save him from this place. The hope is crushed and Yesung can’t believe that he is going to die here completely alone.

“Leeteuk, you need to save my dad and Jongjin. They did nothing wrong.”

The major sighed because he has already thought about it. He can at least it, but he doesn’t want to promise it to Yesung in case that it won’t work. The guards take Yesung away and Leeteuk goes to speak with the commander. The old fatso thinks that the young major enjoyed with the prisoner, but the major doesn’t have time for this.

“His father and brother aren’t so rotten like him. I decide to send them to a re-education camp and if they really love our leader then they will be soon useful citizens of our great country again.”

The commander says nothing and only bowed to him. If major Park says that the two can leave, then they are going to leave. There is a truck and the guards are pushing selected prisoners to walk faster. This truck is heading in a re-education camp where the prisoners will spend a few months or years to get back on the right track of good citizen. The country doesn’t have enough doctors, scientists and other important people so Leeteuk’s mission is to select these people in the labor camps and he will take them in re-education camp.

Yesung is smiling while watching his father and brother getting in the truck. His smile fades away when his brother started to cry and started to argue with their father.

“Yesung! We can’t leave without you!”

Their father holds his younger son who is hysterically crying while watching his hyung waving to him. The truck is leaving and Yesung is waving to them until a guard kicked him and yelled to move. The truck soon disappeared together with major Park and Yesung feels so strong when he knows that his father and brother are safe.

Chapter 25: I'm SPEECHLESS
I don't know how to start ... I ate the whole story as fast as I could, the thing is ... I couldn't stop reading even though I cried since the first chapter.
All the pain Yesung suffered is beyond my imagination ... I still can't believe those things happen in real life and how people who survived the worst of horrors have to live with the memories forever. It's a living nightmare.
I have this bitter taste after reading about the consequences on his mental health... and his physique ... it breaks my heart.
I have read scientific articles about PTSD in victims and they NEVER recover, the trauma is too huge, the damage is too deep that nobody who went through it can heal entirely. It's so sad.
About the story I love the fact that Donghae character is so full of life (like him irl) his resilience is admirable. I cried the times he comforted Yesung, like an older brother would do. He was sweet and strong in the worst moments, he melted my heart.
And for Siwon I can only feel sympathy ... the poor man always wanted to do things right ... he was unlucky to live in a ty country with a crazy leader.
I'm sure I'm going to read this story again sometime, it let a big impact on me. Thank you author-nim :)
