Ch. 4

Husband or stranger?

Yesung broke down during the fifth day of being interrogated. He couldn’t take it any longer, his brain was yelling to stop this somehow so after another beating he turned his tired eyes to Yunho.

“If I say yes, will this stop?”

Yunho nodded and Yesung confessed to all the crimes which Yunho named. He just wants a few minutes without pain and they really leave him alone for a while. Then they picked him up and drag outside where is a military flatbed truck waiting for them. They threw Yesung inside and he hears few gasps. There are already sitting few people who were arrested just like him and Yesung recognized two faces. His brother and father.

As his family members they were also arrested and father can’t recognize his own son. Yesung is beaten up really bad, his left cheek is swollen and blue, so he can’t speak well but still called for his father. The man immediately squeezed past the other people and sat his son up. Jongjin is crying because his brother is hurt and also he doesn’t want to die. He knows what is going to happen. They are heading in a labor camp.

The truck is driving for many hours and then finally stopped. The people are immediately whispering something and hear loud yelling and barking of dogs. The doors opened and few soldiers lift their guns. They jumped out of the truck and stand in a long row. It is raining a bit, the gray sky is making everything even worse. Huge labor camp is unfolding around them. There are many old and gray buildings. High fences are creating few smaller sections inside the camp and soldiers are everywhere. Yelling and crying can be heard and the new prisoners started to shake in fear. A young sergeant stood up in front of the long row of people and started to yell.

“Our great leader is giving you this option to become a better citizen. You are going to work hard for our great country which you betrayed. Be happy for this opportunity!”

He started to yell rules on them and doesn’t forget to mention punishment for breaking any of them. From time to time he hit some of the prisoners with a cane which he is carrying and then led them in a building where are waiting another prisoners with rusty scissors to cut their hair. Yesung’s hair is soon only two centimeters long and they are told to strip off their clothes. Everyone got a disgusting, old and reeking clothes full of holes. Yesung got a pair of shoes together with a few other prisoners but then he saw that Jongjin received none so he gave the almost falling apart shoes to him. Then the sergeant leads them to bunkhouses. There, they have to stand in a row again and a commander of the camp walks in front of them. He is smirking while looking in the scared faces of people who are going to suffer under his hands until they die or his soldiers kill them. The commander is a fat, old man who enjoys being in the head of this labor camp and he is always happy to hear a praise of his cruelty from his superiors. He isn’t going to disappoint their great leader during re-educating these filthy rats. The commander smirked for the last time before he stopped walking and looked around the new prisoner.

“Welcome to Hell.”

Chapter 25: I'm SPEECHLESS
I don't know how to start ... I ate the whole story as fast as I could, the thing is ... I couldn't stop reading even though I cried since the first chapter.
All the pain Yesung suffered is beyond my imagination ... I still can't believe those things happen in real life and how people who survived the worst of horrors have to live with the memories forever. It's a living nightmare.
I have this bitter taste after reading about the consequences on his mental health... and his physique ... it breaks my heart.
I have read scientific articles about PTSD in victims and they NEVER recover, the trauma is too huge, the damage is too deep that nobody who went through it can heal entirely. It's so sad.
About the story I love the fact that Donghae character is so full of life (like him irl) his resilience is admirable. I cried the times he comforted Yesung, like an older brother would do. He was sweet and strong in the worst moments, he melted my heart.
And for Siwon I can only feel sympathy ... the poor man always wanted to do things right ... he was unlucky to live in a ty country with a crazy leader.
I'm sure I'm going to read this story again sometime, it let a big impact on me. Thank you author-nim :)
