Ch. 3

Husband or stranger?

Yesung doesn’t know how long he is standing in the middle of the cold room. They weren’t happy with his answers so they dumped a bucket of cold water on him and told that he has to stand in the room. He tried to sit down after his legs started to hurt, but they knew and beat him until he stood up again. His soaked clothes are freezing in the deep basement and Yesung is shivering. He doesn’t understand it. His husband isn’t a traitor, this must be a mistake. Yes, this has a reasonable explanation for sure. He only needs to wait for Siwon.

Unfortunately, when the men came again, they didn’t announc that this whole thing was only a terrible mistake. No. Yunho is just smoking a cigarette and stares on the trembling man. Yesung is pale and dark circles are decorating his face. One night without sleep, which he spent in the wet clothes took away a big piece of his beauty. Pity: Yunho thinks and got up.

“Last night your husband ran away like a rat. The question is - why did he leave you here?”

Yunho stares on trembling Yesung who shakes his head no.

“My husband .... he isn’t a spy. He is a soldier.”

Suddenly Yunho jumps on him and grabs his hair. Yunho roughly tugs on the hair and arched Yesung’s head back. A red tip of the cigarette is hovering a tiny bit above Yesung’s left eye and he tries to break free. He can feel the hot air and screams in fear.

“What information did Siwon give to South?”

Yesung shakes his head no and looks in Yunho’s cruel eyes. Siwon and him were friends during studying in the capital city. Yunho knows that Siwon isn’t a traitor. They are staring on each other and then Yunho swiftly pressed the burning cigarette above Yesung’s left eyebrow. The prisoner yells in pain and his small hands fly to his face. Yunho threw him aside and fixed his uniform.

“Bring the cage.”

The two soldiers quickly left and Yesung is shaking in fear. A cage? Soon the soldiers are back with small, metal cage and put it on the ground. Yesung begs them and yells that he isn’t a spy, but they still crammed him inside the too small cage. The bars are painfully digging in his body and interrupted circulation of blood to his limbs. Yesung cries in pain while parts of his body swell up. They leave him alone for several hours and then came back. Yunho is smoking again and Yesung fears that maybe this time he will really press the cigaret in his eye.

“Pull him out.”

Yunho sat down on a chair and watches the soldiers who pulled Yesung out of the cage and abruptly straightened his limbs. Yesung screams in excruciating pain and lost consciousness for a few minutes until a bucket of cold water is poured out on him.

“So, did you know that your husband is a spy?”

Yesung shakes his head no and out of nowhere they tied a rag over his face. They kick him to lay him down and Yunho grabs another bucket with water. He is calmly pouring the water on Yesung’s covered face and listens to the panicked noises and gagging. After a few seconds he stopped and moved the rag away. He sees that Yesung is crying, but doesn’t think that he has had enough so he put it back. The waterboarding continues until Yesung passed out and when he woke up again, he is hanging from the ceiling. His ankles are tied together with a rope which is tied to a hook in the ceiling and Yesung feels like his brain is being crushed by the weight of his blood which is rushing to his head. He is watching Yunho who is walking around the room and closed his eyes. How could he? How could Siwon leave him when he knows the punishment for traitors?

Siwon decided to try to run away from the hospital again. His wounds are feeling better so he can move faster and finally get out of here to save Yesung. However, he didn’t know that the hospital is secured so well. The floor where is his room is empty, but there is an elevator and that ruined his escape. You need a card to call the elevator and Siwon didn’t find another way how to get out.

“You don’t understand it! I need to go back and save Yesung!”

Siwon is yelling on two guards who are blocking the door of his room and he is starting to look like a trapped animal.

“Siwon, you can’t go back!”

Shindong yelled on Siwon who is still desperately trying to get over his defense to save Yesung. Siwon is exhausted, hungry and sick, but he still fights to get out of this house until he collapsed on the floor. He failed. He selfishly ran away and thoughts about Yesung being tortured or dead are filling his head.

“You promised to get him here too!”

Shindong rubs his face because he knows what he promised. He is Siwon’s commander here on south and he wanted to get Yesung over the border. Their deal contained a promise that if Siwon is arrested, then Shindong will get Yesung in South Korea. Unfortunately, when the mission during which they get Siwon in South Korea went wrong, they didn’t have different option than to leave Yesung there. Shindong sent another spies to get to him, but police was faster. The truth is that he has no idea where is he right now. He wishes to bring him back to Siwon so bad, however he isn’t even sure if Yesung is still alive.

Chapter 25: I'm SPEECHLESS
I don't know how to start ... I ate the whole story as fast as I could, the thing is ... I couldn't stop reading even though I cried since the first chapter.
All the pain Yesung suffered is beyond my imagination ... I still can't believe those things happen in real life and how people who survived the worst of horrors have to live with the memories forever. It's a living nightmare.
I have this bitter taste after reading about the consequences on his mental health... and his physique ... it breaks my heart.
I have read scientific articles about PTSD in victims and they NEVER recover, the trauma is too huge, the damage is too deep that nobody who went through it can heal entirely. It's so sad.
About the story I love the fact that Donghae character is so full of life (like him irl) his resilience is admirable. I cried the times he comforted Yesung, like an older brother would do. He was sweet and strong in the worst moments, he melted my heart.
And for Siwon I can only feel sympathy ... the poor man always wanted to do things right ... he was unlucky to live in a ty country with a crazy leader.
I'm sure I'm going to read this story again sometime, it let a big impact on me. Thank you author-nim :)
