When Wendy Son received the invitation in the mail, she thought it was a joke.

It was sloppily pasted together with construction paper, the address and details written in large bold letters with a Sharpie. Wendy could’ve sworn her five year old sister could have done better.

She didn’t want to go, but her friend Bae Irene had convinced her. Irene thought it was the funniest thing ever, and told Wendy she had to go and find the crackhead who sent her this.

Pushing thoughts like “how did they get my address?” and “will I get murdered tonight?” out of her head, dressed in a loud, cartoon-ish red dress with a blue apron and matching thigh highs, Wendy made her way up the walk, pushing the door open after knocking, only to no answer.

Upon entering, the place already had loud music, the perfect setting and atmosphere for a party, but was completely dead.

Wendy Son was the only person standing in the middle of the room.

“Hello?” she called out. “Anybody home? I, uh, I got this invitation…” she paused and began fishing through the pockets in her dress Kim Yerim had stitched in for her, unfolding the invitation.

Before she could continue on, a girl in a blue, frilly dress appeared, holding a tray. There were several glasses upon the tray, each filled a little under halfway with some strange, glowing liquid.

“H-hi.” Wendy stuttered. “Am-am I at the wrong place?”

“Have a drink, love.” the girl said, pushing the tray forward.

“What is it?” Wendy asked, skeptically. There were many things Wendy Son would do, but straight up drinking radioactive waste was not one of them.

“It won’t hurt you, love. Just drink it.”

Wendy didn’t know why her hand darted out, wrapping around one of the glasses and sipping from it.

Immediately, she felt light. A little funny, a little fuzzy, a little dizzy.

“Who are you?” Wendy asked.

“Park Sooyoung. But you can call me Joy, love.”

“Joy, alright.” Wendy muttered, glancing down at the glass.

Before she could press anymore questions against Joy, Joy grabbed her hand, pulling her to the side.

She dropped the glass, and four boys burst through the door, all carrying a fifth. They set him down, and they filtered into the room.

Joy stepped out, offering them drinks, and in the blink of an eye there were many other people there, one of the men dancing on the couch, another making out in the corner with some other girl.

“Joy?” Wendy called out, and the girl appeared back at her side.

“Am I crazy, or did-“

“Of course you’re crazy,” Joy cooed. “You came here, didn’t you? We’re all a little crazy here.”

“Oh.” Wendy muttered. That’s not the answer she was expecting.

“Who are you supposed to be?”

“What?”

“Your costume,” Joy elaborated, lifting up the end of Wendy’s dress. Wendy swatted at her hand, preventing her from lifting her skirt up. “Who are you supposed to be?”

“I’m not sure,” Wendy admitted. “My friend gave it to me.”

Despite urging her to go, Irene did not want to go herself. “I value my life.” she had said, tying Wendy’s hair into two, twisty braids that stuck out from either side of her head.

“You remind me of Gretel. From Hansel and Gretel. Or a maid.”

“Thank you? I think?”

“I like you, Wendy Son.”

“How you do you know my name?”

Now that was freaky. Perhaps it was the radioactive drink talking, but Wendy couldn’t recall telling the girl her name.

“I know what everyone’s doing,” Joy said, and the twitched violently. “ALL the time!”

“Okay!” Wendy squeaked in fear, backing up a few steps. She could feel her ‘fight or flight’ instinct firing up, and Wendy had always been a flier.

“I need your help with something.” Joy said, much calmer and relaxed now.

“Okay.” Wendy squeaked again, hesitant to trust or follow this girl.

She did so anyways, trailing her into the bathroom.

The bathroom was a small, rectangular room, with nothing but a sink with a mirror hanging above it.

“We’re going to play a game,” Joy said, opening the cupboard under the sink to reveal a completely empty compartment. “Have you ever bobbed for apples?” Wendy nodded. “We’re going to do that, but a little different. You grab anything that comes into the sink, okay? With your hand.”

Demoting this girl to delusional, Wendy complied, allowing the girl to shove her down into the sink. Being locked in there was better than being out in the party, where the guests had currently entertained themselves by throwing knives at one of the four men and hitting another over the head with a metal bat.

Wendy heard the water run, and then Joy’s footsteps as she left the bathroom.

Whatever Joy had given her must’ve been some pretty strong stuff, because Wendy swore she was beginning to hallucinate- she swore the tub of the sink had slowly faded from opaque to transparent, and she watched as a man stumbled in.

She recognized him as one of the five men from before, and remembering the game, she reached up, grabbing ahold of his nose.

Before she knew it, the man wrenched back, his nose still tightly in her palm.

The man flew back, fumbling around on his face for his nose, and Wendy screamed, thrashing about in the cupboard of the sink.

She kicked against the cupboard doors, but they seemed locked from the outside.

Wendy calmed quickly after from her shock, breathing heavily.

Almost immediately after, the doors opened, revealing a smiling Joy.

“Having fun?”

“What the ?” Wendy cried, and Joy grabbed her nose-free hand, pulling her out of the sink. She took the nose from her, and led her off again to yet another room.

“If you thought that was fun, your night is about to get 10 times better.”

“I didn’t think that was very fun at all. Traumatizing, yes, but not fun.”

Joy laughed, lowering herself onto a bed littered with photos. She shoved them aside, pulling Wendy to the bed with her, handing her a pair of scissors.

“I want you to cut these out for me.”

“Are you sure?” Wendy asked, risking a glance behind her shoulder out into the party. “Shouldn’t we be helping that guy? I mean, he’s puking confetti.”

“He’s fine,” Joy told her, and for some odd reason Wendy really did feel comforted and sure of her words. “Just do this, and I’ll be right back.”

Wendy did as she was told, and Joy got up, grabbing a cake Wendy hadn’t noticed before. As she walked out of the room, the candles ignited.

Wendy had come to the conclusion that this was some weird, crazy fever dream, because again, she swore she saw some guy’s head catch on fire.

Before long, Joy re-entered the room, a man trailing behind her. He looked like one of the five men, but Wendy couldn’t place which one- he looked as if he had a little bit of each one.

“Wendy, this is the perfect boy.” Joy said, and then grabbed her hand again, pulling her out of the bedroom and back into the main room.

The five guys were gone, and Joy pulled Wendy close to her, starting to dance with her.

“I feel like I should get going.” Wendy pressed, desperate to leave whatever drug-induced hellhole she had walked into.

“Nonsense,” Joy said, still swaying with Wendy to the music. “You’ll stay here forever. With me.”

“I really should get going.” Wendy said, trying to pull away.

Anger flickered in Joy’s eyes, but her expression stayed that same sweet smile. She moved forward, shoving Wendy hard in the shoulders.

She fell back, her head slamming against the floor, and when she opened her eyes next, she was laying in bed back at Irene’s place.

Wendy was changed out of the red dress and wearing a more casual, striped shirt, but her hair was still being twisted into the braids by Irene, who sat beside her, her hair in her hands.

“What happened?” Wendy asked, glancing around as best as she could without moving her head. She saw her phone in her hands, and the effects of the drink must still be laced within her, as again, she hallucinated a glitch in the screen, the message ‘marriage is a slow death’ flashing across it.

“What do you mean?” Irene asked, leaning over and peering curiously at her. “We’re getting you ready for that Halloween party again.”

“Again?” Wendy demanded, panic rising within her.

“Remember the one you went to last year? Where you met Joy?”

Last year? What the hell was going on…

“Y-yeah.” Wendy muttered, playing along. This had to be some strange joke Irene was playing on her.

“All done.” Irene said, releasing Wendy’s hair.

She got up, and Wendy followed her down the stairs.

Wendy was plagued by yet another hallucination, as by the time she reached the bottom of the stairs, she was standing in Joy’s living room again.

Joy, dressed like a bride, complete with a bouquet and veil, stood in the middle of the room, that plasticy smile across her face again.

“Hiya, baby,” she said, holding the bouquet out. “You like them?”

Wendy moved forward, leaning in to smell the flowers. When she moved back, she found herself sitting in a pile of clothes, the dress she was wearing similar to the blue one Joy was wearing the night she first met.

Standing in front of her was Joy, wearing a white dress with gold accents hanging from it.

As always, Joy gripped her hand, pulling her up and away, and Joy ran into a closet, Wendy following with her.

On the other side of the closet was a stage, and Wendy found herself being the only person seated in the audience, applauding.

The five guys (one missing a nose, another missing a mouth, the third missing his eyes, and the fourth being without his head completely) stood in the centre taking their bows, and then stumbled around, trying to find their places again.

Irene rushed forward, along with Yeri, and another girl Wendy recognized. Whether she was her friend or from the party, she didn’t know, but they also took their bows.

Finally, Joy took centre stage, taking her bows, and then the others came forward, and all nine took one large bow together.

The red curtains shut, hiding the nine from view, and Wendy stood there, her applause the only sound heard.
