One. Blood Diamonds.

“My father used to preach that to push away morals, one must first purchase a bottle of whiskey.” The man standing on the podium clears his throat, gripping the sides of a tear-stained paper. “I never knew what he meant but I would imagine that that was the reason why he never purchased any form of alcohol.”

The death of another great man. Lieutenant Jeon Jun Ho who died on the frontlines, shot down by a foolish teenager who wielded a pistol. Jungkook knew his father died with good name and lived honourably. Yet, he did not know the man who stood at the podium, who claimed he was the Chief Lieutenant’s son as well.

The child of a cop and a e didn’t deserve any place in the Lieutenant’s life. Even after his death, Jungkook knew that making his existence known,  would only dirty his birth father’s reputation. He was only grateful that he had had his fair share of quality time with his estranged father before he passed.

At least, it was enough time for Jungkook to know that the Lieutenant kept a personal collection of emptied whiskey bottles tucked away in the back of his office. Enough time for Jungkook to help his father empty the last one.

Many nights were spent in debating on whether to jail the only son of a sickly mother. Or to stop a minor’s ion services needed to save her family from debt. Many nights were spent in blurring the lines between wrong and right. Bottles of Whiskey were highly essential.

Jungkook had no intention to get to know his half-brothers nor their mother.

“He knew it all along.”

Jungkook turned to see a familiar face; a colleague who was now promoted as the new Lieutenant. Park Minseok. He quickly tucked away the bottle of whiskey into his coat pocket.

“Knew what?” Jungkook asked.

“That you were his son.”Minseok continued, “He was proud to call you his son.”

Jungkook looked away, “Was he proud enough to tell the truth to his wife?”

The older man huffed a short chuckle. “She already knows. Your name was stated in his will.”

So he was bringing the secret to his grave, Jungkook thought. Yet for a short moment, Jungkook felt proud for ruining his father’s reputation. To shame him in return for the childhood scars he had received due to his mother’s abuse. She died of drug overdose when Jungkook entered college with a scholarship. He’d been couch surfing from friend to friend since then before finding a job and his way back to his estranged father in Busan.

“I heard you’re resigning?”

Jungkook gave a curt nod. The funeral had already ended. Family members had placed their white roses on top of the casket. Jungkook watched as they began to lower the casket and finally put his father’s soul to rest.

“Why? We need a smart guy like you. You and I both know that the new recruits are idiots.” The Captain pressed on, “If you take back the resignation, I can guarantee you a promotion.”

Jungkook’s thin lips tilted into a smirk. He ducked his head down and as he walked past the older man, he merely murmured softly. “I don’t have a reason to be there anymore.”

As he walked back to his car, Jungkook decided that a road trip was due. He had no reason to stay in Busan anymore and travelling alone was a better idea than being tied down to one place. He had the money saved up and a car. He could rent out his apartment to get a little bit more income.

His mind lingered on his half siblings; all of whom were years younger than him. He wondered if they knew of his existence and how they would react. His thoughts began to fade however once he reached home. A photograph had been left on the doormat of his home. Jungkook frowned as he picked it up.

In red marker, it read “Find him. Or I will kill you.”

Jungkook knew exactly which case the anonymous writer was referring to. The Blood Diamonds case. He examined the photograph closer as he entered his home. Jungkook was far from alarmed; Busan was a infested with gangs crawling around like rats. A threat to his life was nothing new. The photograph was of a young teenage girl with wavy platinum blonde hair. Slim nose. High cheekbones. A small mole under her left eye. She was a nice thing to look at although she had almost no traits to make her stand out. He flipped the picture to find the girl’s name written at the back;  Ahn Hwasa.

The Blood Diamonds case was a highschool massacre. Ahn Hwasa being the only student who survived. 6 students died of drug overdose however, diamonds had been encased into commercial drugs that the teens had taken at a party. The diamonds were recovered in an autopsy but had mysteriously disappeared overnight. The case was then closed once the diamonds and all evidence di
