Leave it to Koreans to still find a reason to be xenophobic about something :/ Okay but the situation is a lot more complicated than that. There are a lot of complicated ethnic things going on with that group of people, and other koryo-saram from the once USSR states, and a lot of Koreans feel like they're traitors for basically completely abandoning their Koreanness. I mean look at Daebak, you can tell that he's clueless about Korean culture sometimes, like how he doesn't bow when he should and messes up honorifics and generally stands like a sore thumb. And that's not even touching on the butchering of the language.
I'm not saying it's okay to give a survival show candidate for his heritage but also you shouldn't judge an entire culture so quickly either. Oh boy here we go. First episode and someone who really deserved to be there is already eliminated, that didn't take long. This is why I hate survival shows. That kid has this amazing voice, he belongs on stage, but because he's not one of the pretty or the funny or the weird ones he's sent home. I will fight someone if Yeonin or Jaemin get eliminated next.
The busking thing was cute, and I suppose useful since I did see some fancams floating around before the episode aired. I can't even condemn Haneul for cheating so hard since it was clever. It was nice to see a bit of everyone's personality and cleverness in how they went about the challenge though. We see so much of them working on groups, it was also nice to just get some insights of how they function alone.
Onto the performances though. Honestly Yeonin didn't do very well, speaking of him. I expected better from him but yeah he was just not really feeling the song I guess and it was obvious. I guess you can be a great technical singer but still give a bad performance if you're not feeling it. Yoonshik did great though, which really surprised me. He didn't stand out to me before but he nailed it. And James, well, he chose his song well it was made for him, as was the choreography. I'm not a huge fan of the fanservicey touching but seeing the comments everywhere I'd say I'm in the minority. The one that surprised me the most is Hugo, he wasn't focus point in the performance but I'd never have pointed to him as someone who could pull off a y concept at all, let alone fo fairly well, so good on him.
Team Haneul's preformance was good though! There was the continuation of Inho vs Cipher, but it seems they've reached some sort of stubborn stalemate. I can kind of respect Inho for sticking to his guns though it hasn't made him very popular. Either way I enjoyed the performance, Daebak created a great dance, and even though it did feel too heavy on the Haneul, they did good. Not sure how to feel about them changing the song, but I get Hanjin's sentiment. This is a survival show and they're doing anything to survive. They could have gone about it a better way but I don't blame them for what they did.
Alex was obviously not cut out for leading, but who blames him I mean the guy is, what, 19 years old? Still they did good, I think. Most of their forgettability was the song, they obviously got the shorted end of the stick (though I think Butterfly could've been forgettable if it weren't for the raps and the choreo). The dance was cute but nothing to write home about, but I enjoye
