Crooked

READ THE AUTHOR NOTE AT THE END. IT IS SUPER FAKING IMPORTANT.

~

The bats screeched overhead. I my lips, eyeing the creatures in awe. They were free. Flying away with no intention of ever returning. Besides, who would? This place—this dark, dank, wet, horrible place is a human jail, but specifically for demons and those in need for confinement. Either due to their statuses, or something not quite right in their mental state of minds.

For me?

...It was both.

My status? Something people would call… The Pet of Hades. As in the God of the Underworld, the person who worked together with Lucifer himself. Then there was my damn mentality. Human terms would call it bipolar. Demons labeled it as unstable. Now, now, wait a minute. Hold on, don’t think that’s it. When something like us use a word like that, they mean something that could ruin a continent. A thing that could destroy a large mass of both societies. So, if that’s the case… Why do humans say I’m bipolar? A better suited label for me is possibly the walking doom. Or, or someone who has no control.

My other two souls agree quite well with it—that’s why I lead.

A drop landed on my snout, causing it to wiggle at the cold liquid. My eyes slowly moved upward, ignoring the jagged, rocky walls to see only darkness above. Only a second later, another one came down, landing on my paw this time. There was a small sigh that left my lips, one of irritation and annoyance.

The bats, they hadn’t done their job. Useless beings…

My brother to the left woke up, sharp nose twitching with his dull eyes blinking sleepily. I nosed his neck, assuring him of our current position. He growled, laying back down with orbs fluttering shut. With a small grunt, I shifted away from the younger and my muzzle.

“Young demon of Hades… can you hear me?” Its voice was weak, worthless, and nearly nothing. I turned and lowered my gaze to a small hybrid that was easily confirmed as a kitten hybrid. At least she spoke with respect, otherwise, I’d ask my brother to my right to kill her. Not that he’d go against my words, of course.

“I hear you, lowly thing. What is it you need from something like I?” There was no need to keep eye contact, I knew I was scaring the lithe child. Her own eyes were full of life, glowing in fear and a sliver of submission. She scooted closer, chains latched to her calves and wrists binding her to only come so near. The kitten mewled in pain, glaring at the cuffs before clearing adult-like.

“I have never seen your dominating being before, may you come in the dim light of which the magma emits?” She waited for an answer while I stared at the darkness from the ceiling. More droplets were pouring down, no longer in sync to where I could count without trying. The child pawed at my right shoulder, which made me twist it in order for her disgusting hands to release me.

“No. You’ll see me soon enough. Only in a matter of time.” She didn’t question any further, instead, scurrying to her shackles and merely playing with them. Not that I took any interest, that hybrid was anything but interesting.

The same stench that I’ve grown used too. Today, it was much stronger. More as if the stench took on a solid form and allowed itself to ruin our senses with the horrifying smell. Of rotting flesh and dried blood, even with a hint of regurgitation in the air. It made my stomach coil. Not even the Underworld—which was infested with the dead, was ever this bad.

Oh how I miss my home…

But, the smell was my fault. No, not since the beginning. No, no, no. Rather, how pungent it was of now. Not that I could help it. There was this guard… I did not like him. He was a young lizard, his scent giving away just how fresh he was. In other words, a new recruit. This, that child, somehow, for whatever reason, came to the conclusion that he was superior over me.

The sole reason I could make out that was sensible was that the man was a moron.

No. no, he is but—it was likely from me being bound down by these shackles.

Now, believe me when I say I do not start a fight right when I become annoyed—not all the time. So, when he came up to that stupid thought, I ignored how insolent he was being in my presence. For example, throwing what they would feed my brothers and me, where I had to hold the youngest of us back when he rose up. Or, another time when he was supposed to loosen our cuffs, the man tightened them instead.

Oh, how I hated him.

Yesterday, I had done something about it.

Although, it took time to plan it out.

One, I had to get him when no guards were around. Two, he had to still believe that he was above me. Three, the idiot had to be carrying the keys. Lastly, he should have his assortment of whips with him as well.

And it took exactly ten days for all of those conditions to be met in a single night.

He was easily tricked, I tell you. Not exactly smart, but very naive.

I just used a nearby prisoner for my plan. After I killed the jailed, weak, elder hybrid, we the brother who murdered him clean and whipped his body to the rocks with my tail. Then, blood splattered across the walls, and on all of us still bound. They all screamed in horror, trying to flee from me while I pretended to be sleeping. Since here, I was known to be a deep one.

My two brothers quickly nuzzled into my neck, burrowing their noses in fur and letting out content sighs. For us, this was a way to let out some anger, and it was indeed worth it. With our eyes closed, all we had to do is wait.

It didn’t even take a minute for him, the guard of these quarters, to shakily unlock the cell with the loud screeching of everyone but us. Then, our plan began.

My youngest brother to my right opened one eye, giving vision for both my other brother and I to see. One was a go. Three was a go. Four was a go. Two, it’s naturally a go. We smiled in unison, but quickly wiped it off our faces and ordered our little sibling to act with us once again.

“I-It was him! T-That monster! R-Right in front of us!” I could only register the voice as one from a mere child. Without a doubt, the others were too frightened from being who I am, to answer truthfully. Instead, they kept their mouths shut, knowing what is good for them.

There was a click of boots, then a sharp snap beside my paw. I didn’t flinch, since a toy like that didn’t scare me. He demanded for us to stand, to spit out the truth or we’d be whipped severely. We slowly ‘awoken’ from out peaceful sleep to somehow find our fur soaking in blood. My right brother whined, distaste clear in his eyes while the brother to the left stared blankly at the ground. Me? I yawned loudly, my teeth and staring at the freshman with bleary eyes.

“Come again?” My second brother asked with faux confusion, tilting his head for more effect. “Were you the ones who did this? The little one said so.” Our eyes glared at the child who involuntarily shivered. A remark was at the tip of my tongue, but I swallowed it down when the guard was dead serious—for once.

“As if. We were sleeping.” My third brother grumbled, yawning with a devious grin following up. The second sibling turned his head in the direction where the voices came from, blinking slowly. “Why don’t you ask the rest of them? If I had done it, then they would tell you, right?” I had to hold back a smirk after seeing him scowl. He turned to the imprisoned demons, silently asking for an answer.

As expected, they all stayed mute, their view trained entirely on the red juice that looked like a blanket on the floor. I was amused. These were demons. Demons. And they were afraid of another who was of higher rank, not even daring to try and speak the truth of what they had witnessed. It was degrading of their kind to do that. I suppose their lives matter more than their pride.

“It would seem they have nothing to say. Does that suffice enough to prove our innocence?” My second sibling said steadily as he rested his head against the gravel flooring. He looked put off, showing that it wasn’t to his liking. “I’m afraid it does. I apologize.” I produced a fake smile, “It’s quite alright. May you… loosen our chains? They are having us struggle to breathe.”

He nodded, putting away his spiked whip in a pocket.

We grinned in unison.

We bowed our heads, feeling his fingers tangle in our sticky fur as they fiddled with the collars. There was a short click on my neck. The idiot left it to slide off me, falling on the ground as he moved to my brothers. While the new recruit was busy with them, I glanced at the two siblings, nodding briefly which they grunted in return.

“And the last one….” He whispered, seeking out my youngest brother and messing with his choker. “D…nnn.” I instantly side glanced my left sibling, aiding him immediately after noticing the chain wrapped around his neck wouldn’t come off all the way. “I got it, don’t worry.” It soothed him, allowing me to break it off with a bite.

“Bro. Are we a go or not?” It seemed that the guard was done. We rose to our feet, towering over the oblivious man and our lips in hunger. “We are a go.” My third brother began laughing sadistically, lowering his head to come to the freshman’s side. While the other copied to the opposing side, I loomed over him with a bright smile.

“Oh, finally… Finally, I get to put you through your worst nightmares.” The youngest sang evilly, catching the guard’s attention once he knew it was directed to him, and only him. “W-W-Wha!? Y-You t-three t-t-tricked me!” He stuttered fearfully, fumbling for his whips and struggled to pull it out. I chuckled darkly, absolutely adoring the terrified expression he held.

“You’re a fool for believing us. A complete fool. We are demons, did you honestly think we wouldn’t have some sort of motive? –You are a disgrace to all pitiful demons who stay below us. Forever and ever…” I said with narrowed eyes, using my left paw to pin him to the dirt floor. He let out a broken cry, flailing his thin arms against my leg to somehow lift it.

“We should hurry. These dungeons… they are too small for us. I feel the stalactites scraping my shoulders…” The second brother murmured with a slight pout. And I couldn’t help but coo at the sight. “Yeah! Yeah! Yeah! Uh-huh! Uh-huh! We hafta be leaning down so we don’t end up caving in!” After sharing a nod, my youngest sibling drifted down to smile in front of the panting guard.

“Mind giving us the keys? We’d appreciate it.” He only groaned, glaring at us and even daring to spit at my short-tempered sibling. Floppy ears twitched, a sharp look of anger and disgust taking over, “You….you sonofa—“

“It hurts…”

“Both of you, shut up.” I snarled, snorting a moment later when they silenced automatically. “Give us the ring, trash.” After a noticeable gulp, he weakly motioned to his legs. “Keep an eye on this trash. I’m raising my foot.” The duo grunted, swiftly biting his arms in case he was somehow able to move after the crushing brought by my limbs.

The weakling screamed in agony, fighting against their grip as I searched for the ringlet. Those horrible screeches continued once I caught sight of the rusty loop. The item was clipped to his pant pocket, clinking softly whenever he’d attempt to flail his legs. But, they were nothing but broken bones.

With my long tongue, I snatched the keys and ripped the jeans in the process. With a single hole, blood and shards of white oozed out ever so slowly from the newly formed gap. “Release him. The man cannot move any longer.” They did as told, but smiling wickedly when they decided to rip off his arms with an ear-shattering howl occurred a second later.

Then, theeen they dropped the torn limbs and waited for my command.

"…Strap him to the ceiling. On the stalactites, then tie him with the whip he carries for punishment.”

“N-No! Don’t do this! S-S-Stop! I have a family!”

“So do we. You’re going to die anyway, with all of the blood loss, wouldn’t you say… brother?”

“Indeed. Hurry. Hyung wants us to get this done.”

“C’mon! We need to start stage two.”

  •

And that is where we are now. At the moment, we were waiting for nightfall. That is when the Gates of the Underworld are open. Our only chance of making it home safely and without being seen. The other two were restless, mainly the third, but they were a little jumpy. They just wanted to see Hades again, and maybe hear him play the piano. He has nimble fingers—that god.

...Ouch. That was very much two-sided. Please, understand what I am trying to get across.

“How many more hours?” My brother to the left asked softly, not making any effort to look at me. “Few more minutes.” That made the youngest giddy. “Really, really, really?? Yay! We can finally leave! Let’s go see Daddy!” We smiled gently at the other, resting our paws on the hidden keys while the other prisoners were beyond too frightened to speak.

“What do we do about the… leakage?” The second asked carefully, motioning to the body dripping from the ceiling. “Nothing. We just wait, and walk on out. Don’t worry about it.” He didn’t seemed satisfied with the response, but nodded nonetheless.

  •

It was now night.

Still, not a single person in the chambers was asleep. Again, it was amusing to us. “Now we begin.” They nodded, rising up with me and stretching with a yawn. “Keys?” My second brother asked tiredly, which I showed when I lifted my paw. “Let’s go! Let’s go! Let’s go! Uh-huh, uh-huh!” I nipped at the third’s scruff to shut him up.

"So...”

“Do we go to our hybrid form?”

“True hybrid.”

“Shut up, hyung! I was speaking to my other brother!”

“Yah! I’ll whip your —“

"Hyyyuuuuunnnnngg~"

“Yes. We go to our true hybrid form. They don’t know of it, so it’ll be quite easy to sneak past them.”

They quieted, nodding as we transformed back. Damn brothers always bicker… My attire was still fresh, not a speck of dirt on the silk. Buttoning the cuffs, I used my tail to grab the ringlet and walk to the front door. It was dimly lit, a proven point that every guard was either asleep, or off duty.

“Y-You are… I recognize that human form!” The kitten hybrid said with a squeal, hands over her lips in shock. A brow raised. There shouldn’t be a single person who could remember this, a child no less. “You shouldn’t be able to, brat.” I spit, moving towards her and slamming her body into the wall. She whined, blindly trying to hit me.

“How do you know this form? How do you remember this form? Answer me!” I roared, my two other souls slipping out my heart and floating beside me. They were laughing, bouncing around childishly. The kitten cried pathetically, taken over by fear completely. My hand released her in disgust, turning away with a sharp glare directed to everyone else.

“You.” I pointed at the blue soul, then motioned to the sobbing child. “Kill her. She’s useless. And you, unlock the door.” The white spirit lifted the ring of keys off my tail, flying to the lock and sliding in keys one by one.

“H-Have mercy on m-my child! P-P-Please!” My head turned to the female that suddenly declared the cat as her daughter. “Why should I?” I barked, fixing the collar of my button-up with a snarl. “S-She’s innocent! Kiara d-d-d-doesn’t know anything! N-Nothing!” The blue soul huffed, but growled when I held up my hand.

“Shut up. Madame, state your name.” I hissed, eyes locked onto the white spirit who finally opened the door. “M-My name? W-W-Why is that of— A loud snarl left my lips, “Who said you could ask questions? Answer, or I’ll kill the child.” That seemed to be enough to get the lady to follow orders. “K-Krystal… I do not know my birth givers, so I have no last name.”

I snorted, flicking my wrist to the glowing spirit near the child, “Kill her.” The mother let out a shriek, “Y-You said that i-if I told you my name—“

“Maybe you don’t understand…” I began, beginning to become irritated by our plan having so many obstacles in our path. “I asked your name only to confirm that you were not an actual Madame. If you were, I would have let go of the child. Seeing that you don’t even have a last name, is enough proof for me. Her and your souls are nothing but trash, worthless. So, I can do as I please with them. She pissed me off, so I say she dies. Kill her, now.“ Without hesitation, the child-like being slipped inside her body. It took only seconds to see the little one struggle to breathe, frost growing on her palms, throughout the whole figure.

The literal definition of a human snowflake.

“Stop playing. Come back already.” I snapped, rolling my eyes when the playful spirit decided to hide in her frozen body. Giving him a few seconds, I let out an irritated growl, storming to the dead body and impaling the stomach with my bare fist. “Get out. We only have only so many hours.” He didn’t want to, apparently.

“Enough. I am in no mood for this.” Still, nothing. By now, I was utterly fed up with the idiot and took it into my own hands. Using my other hand, I slit the throat, ignoring the horrified shrieks and dug my hand down the neck. “This is no longer funny. Tell me where you are.”

“Nooooo~” He sang, his annoying voice echoing in the hollow body. Most likely hollow as my hands ripped out her intestines just to search. “Brother… stop playing. We need to return to Hades.” The white soul murmured, moving down to see any signs of the blue one.

I ripped out the spinal cord, clawing down frail arms and catching a pale tail of the color sky. “Got you.” Using both hands, I quickly dug a hole in the child’s body and grabbed the small spirt with my bloody nails. He squirmed, whining in anger as the red oozed over him. “Brat. Let’s go.”

They were both forcibly put back inside my body.

“Y-You monster…. How could anyone look up to you?!” The mother screamed, tears running down her wrinkled face. “It’s their own idiocy. Now, be quiet or I’ll snap your neck!” I threatened, kicking open the cell door and firstly finding a sink to wash my hands.

“I HOPE YOU BURN IN HELL!”

Ugh, hybrids…

“For you information, I practically live there.”

  •

"Brother?"

“Hmm?”

“… You’ve seen Mama, right?”

“…. ….. ….Yeah. Why?”

“Cause. I wanna know what she looks like.”

“…Think of Aphrodite. But with black hair and tattoos. And curvier.”

“She was pretty then?”

“Very.”

He went silent, eyes downcast with a hint of glossiness. “You wanted to meet her, didn’t you?” My other brother smiled sadly at the third, reaching over and ruffling dark locks. “But you didn’t see her either, right?”

“I did. But, I was pretty young back then, so I can’t remember.”

“Both of you, it would be wise not to dwell on the past. They only bring us dread.”

“Only after Daddy took us, everything got better.”

"Yeah..."

I opened my eyes, inhaling the scents of dewdrops and low-class demons around us. With a small, aggravated sigh, I continued walking through the dense forest. My two brothers didn’t utter a word. No, they only kept to themselves. Probably noticing that I was not in the mood for anything.

Every once in a while, we’d come across stale traces of travelers or possible adventurers, but they were long gone by then. Even so, the mere faint smell made my insides coil. Just being near made me want to rip someone’s head off. Being trapped for over five years really took a toll on me, surely if I react this negatively.

As the leader, I took most of the result of it, not my brothers. They acted a bit more… roughly, but it was close enough to their once normality.

Time passed, and still moving to the portal. Honestly, if I was in the demon form, it’d be much easier to find it before sunrise. Seriously it would! I’m the size of a mountain! –I think. Or maybe that’s an over exaggeration….

“Time?”

“Two in the morning, bro.”

“Dammit.”

Another angry sigh.

After around another hour or so, I saw the first dead tree with a corpse of a leopard laying upon a branch. Finally, a hint. “Yaaaaaayyyy!” The third squealed, hugging the second and knocking him over in the process. “Yah! Stop fooling around! We still have almost another hour until we get there!” They both pouted.

The air changed. It formed to something suffocating. But, my lungs were still used to it, since I had lived through such conditions all my life. So, it didn’t affect me in the slightest. “Purple smog. Poisonous. Kills once inhaled. Death sprites clog your lungs until they rot from the inside.” I mumbled monotonously, remembering what Master Hades taught me about the pathway.

“Passive one: Fast Learner.”

Taking in a deep breath, I felt the beginning of suffocating, then nothing. “If this has appeared, then I am only a mile away from the portal.” The third cheered. The second blinked sleepily. “Let’s go.” My youngest sibling wouldn’t stop singing the whole way there.

  •

“We’re going on a trip—“

"Stop."

“In our favorite rocket ship—“

"Stop."

“Zooming through the sky—“

“Listen to your hyung.”

"Little--"

“BAMBAM SHUT THE UP!”

He finally stopped singing. It had been the tenth song, and all had something to do with Disney. Just thinking of that human crap made my skin crawl. “How are you a demon, no—how are you even our brother?” The second wondered aloud, swiftly dodging a punch in his direction.

“… …A whole new world—“ BamBam began softly, but I cut him off the instant I recognized the movie. “No. Shut up right now before I get your other hyung to hit you.” He bit his lip, but quieted in the process.

“…How much farther?”

“A few more minutes.”

“How about we play a game then? We’ve been all pissed by being locked up, so we should relieve the tension~”

"...No."

“I agree with hyung.”

“But guys—“

“We’re here.” I cut him off, motioning to the dark abyss in front of us. We all looked down, the bottomless pit a reminder of the chambers we only just recently left. “Let’s go.” Before they could say anything, I took a step forward and plunged into darkness.

Other than the wind roaring in my ears, BamBam was screaming in horror.

…Oh how I hate my brothers.

Nahhh, I love them more than anything.

  •

I landed on my feet, smiling widely at the wonderful sight of home.

Most of it was dead. Black grass who never lived to see the day, bare trees that looked like human bones. There was even black roses growing, a sure sign of death. The smog wasn’t with us any longer, now it was just the intense pressure Hades would give off in his realm. Sky, it wasn’t blue-no, it was a midnight color with a white moon in a corner.

I slid to my knees and laid in the refreshing grass, tugging on them and smiling joyfully. “I’m—we’re home.” My tail wagged in excitement as I rolled in the dead blades, in taking a lungful of the dense air. My two brothers didn’t say anything, they couldn’t. They were both crying.

“Hades… I need to see Hades!” I exclaimed, scrambling to my feet and running down the long path to the castle. Said building was at the very center of the Underworld, like what humans would call a haunted mansion but it was quite extravagant on the inside.

We made it faster than anticipated, much to my delight. Before I knocked, I stared at my bare hands for a moment, then rolled my eyes. “, my gloves.” Quickly fishing out said black gloves and putting them on, I pushed open the large wooden doors, not even bothering to knock.

There was a piano playing quietly in the background.

I shivered at the melody, silently shuffling to the right staircase and making my way up. The music became louder. My tail wagged as it became clearer and clearer. Body slowly becoming restless. A sadistic smile growing.

  •

I gently opened a door with vine-like carvings in the steel, sighing in relief when no creak was made. Once it was agape, the beautiful song was loud, echoing in the near empty household. Precise keys played perfectly with nimble fingers.

A softer smile grazed my features, stepping in the room to see him with the piano. His bony fingers pressing against each key without a single wrong, focused solely on the music. There was no book, it was a song made by him that us two could only know. Eyes closed, silent except the melody.

With light steps, I inched closer, but stopped abruptly when it reached the . Emotions ripped through my souls, weighing me down. An intangible thing, just like our past. My throat tightened with shaky breaths. Trembling legs and eyes shut. Tears began to form.

A quiet, nearly inaudible sob left my lips.

He still hadn’t noticed.

I took one weak step before falling to the carpeted floor, whimpers leaving me. Hands covering my eyes as I tried to stop the tears, rubbing them harshly.

“I….”

His playing didn’t falter.

“I’m…. home.”

The notes slowly went to silence. He rose from his seat, tracing the keys before turning to me.

“Welcome home, Daehyun.”

With blurred vision, my eyes caught onto the clear tears falling from his hooded face. Upon realizing, a loud, broken cry escaped from me.

“I’ve missed you.”

“A hound from Hell was released carelessly. . . “
