We're A Broken Family...

Crooked

"Mama?"

“What is it, darling?”

“When can I leave? Or, or… go outside the gates? I see Noona always flying out…why can’t I?” Momma sunk to her knees, wrapping her arms around me with green-ish and purple-like feathers attached to the human limbs. “Baby… you can’t. You just can’t. Please understand…”

“But you never tells me why!” I screamed, my own feathers ruffled in anger. Momma only patted my head, whispering ‘please, just don’t. Don’t leave.’ My head hurt, I felt a headache coming on as I continued thinking about the reasons why.

“Listen to Mommy, you cannot go outside, alright?” She said in an overly-cutesy way, thinking I’d be swayed. That annoying tone only bothers me now. “Look at me, and say you understand, young man.” Now it was stern, more parent-like. She broke the hug to glare at me, clearly irritated.

“I got it…” I grumbled coldly, not looking into her beady eyes as I spoke. “Louder, and you have to look at me.” Momma snapped, grabbing my chin and forcibly creating eye-contact.

“I. Got. IT.” I spat out each word, emphasizing as well, much to her annoyance. “Good. Now, stay here while I go to the market.” She hissed, turning to leave me in the large home.

“IT’S NOT LIKE I CAN GO ANYWHERE.” I shouted, seeing her stop moving and whip her head back to me. “I swear to God—“

“Mom, we are the Gods.”

“No. We are deities.”

“Same thing.”

  •

I was a stupid kid back then. That was the first warning that was given to me. She said ‘I swear to God.’ People like us don’t say that. We are the ones who are just like them, so why speak of one? There are many, all types of Gods, and yet… she spoke of one. When she’s the one who’d lash me when I’d accidently speak of only one, and not name them specifically.

…I was such a smart- back then.

  •

“Noooooonaaaa~” She ignored me, still staring at the mirror and putting on stuff villagers would wear on their faces. Make-down or something. I think it made her an ugly witch. When she opened a bottle with a loud pop, I pouted.

“Noooooonnnnnaaa~” Again, ignored. Anger began to bubble inside, something my Momma would call a ‘-fit’, whatever that is. “NOONA!” My sister jumped, slamming the awful smelling stuff and turning to glare at me sharply.

“What the do you want, little idiot?” She snarled, baring her fangs at me in challenge. “…What’s a ?” Noona slapped a hand over her artificially pink lips with wide eyes. “D-Don’t say it! Not in front of Mother either!” I pouted, crossing my arms and flicking my tail.

“Why?” I actually knew why. She was doing something bad, which I found out the day she began doing it. “I-It’s not a good word. And leave me alone!” Her violet feathers were ruffled, seeming as if it was a dress on her.

“Is it because… you don’t want Momma to know you’ve been ing with a villager?”

"KIM--"

“I may be ten, but I’m not some idiot. There’s a reason I was chosen to be a deity.” She shut her lips, a thin frown now forming with black stuff becoming smudged on her eyes. “H-How did you even find out?” Noona asked weakly, raising from her love seat and sitting beside me on the bed.

“You brought him to our sky home.” had dried once I said that. “You were awake?” I nodded childishly, “Yep! I’m always awake! Momma calls me nocturnal, you know.” My sister went silent, clasping her hands tightly with long, painted nails scraping skin.

"So..."

“Oh, I heard everything.” I purred, smirking darkly when she began to sweat, utterly ruining her efforts on looking like a witch. Noona bit her lip, water forming in her eyes when she realized I wasn’t joking around. “E-Every—“

“Yeah, I heard you like a wonton whor—“

“YAH!” She slapped me across the face, the tears flowing down her cheeks with make-down mingled in. I quieted, nibbling on my lip when the tangy taste of blood rose in my mouth. “N-Noona…” I hiccupped, holding my bruising cheek with my own tears in my eyes.

“What?!” She looked at her hand when seeing my watery eyes, shaking when seeing her hand and falling to her knees. Noona used her powers to hurt me. That is forbidden with siblings.

“I-I’m bleeding… i-it hurts!!” I screamed, tears staining my face as I scrambled off the bed. She grabbed my wrist and jerked me back, the force made me let out another pained cry. “STOP HURTING ME!” I wailed, using my claws to rake down her arm and break free when she howled in agony.

“I’m sorry!” She cried, holding her bleeding arm and running after me down the stairs. Daddy was at the door, black wings sleek and elegant, one of a kind that any person could spot. “D-Daddy!” He turned instantly upon hearing my tone, dropping his items and rushing to my side.

“W-What happened?! Who hurt you?!” He asked worriedly, rubbing my purple wrist soothingly and massaging my unhurt cheek with soft touches. “S-Sissy! M-My face bleeding! Daddy, it hurts!” I whimpered, coughing when the liquid overflowed from my mouth.

“Dad! I didn’t mean to!” She butted in, hissing when her scratches would burn from the air. Daddy was torn, looking at the two of us, not knowing who to believe. “Tell me what happened, and both of you better not lie.” We nodded, letting him lead us to the kitchen where we sat down.

“Son, you start.”

I told him exactly what happened, word for word and even the insults I made to my sister. He nodded, soaking up the information before motioning to Noona. She held up her hand, “No, it’s exactly as he said it.”

Daddy went silent. Eerie silence that made me shift uncomfortably in my chair. He got up, loomed over me for a second before slapping the back of my head. I whined, using my uninjured hand to rub the burning spot with a frown. Then Daddy moved to Noona and did the same thing, but harder.

“First, you taunted her. Then, she reacted unlike our traditions. You reacted back in self-defense. That’s how I see it. And—I need to speak with you privately.” He growled to Sis, who bowed her head in shame and shuffled to his side.

Momma came home later that day, wearing a Villager’s necklace that was easily known as a gift. Sure, we get those once in a while, but not every-god-damn-day. That was my second mistake. And not telling my Father.

  •

I peeked out my window, checking the surroundings before opening it with a click. Then slipping out of my locked room and onto the backyard. “They’ll never know~ Being grounded has its perks after all.” I sang with a smirk, leaning over the edge of our backyard to see the vast amount of land thousands of feet under us.

A sudden gust of air pushed me away, which ended with me colliding onto the home. It sent a shockwave of pain, but I easily got over it and tip-toed to the edge. The long drop made me gulp, willing away any ill thoughts and shake my head.

I’ll be fine. I have wings after all!

I spread said limbs feeling the soft wind against my feathers. “I can do this… I can do this…” At least I think I can… Maybe this was a bad idea…. Those thoughts were cut off when a shrill voice grabbed my attention, as well as scaring me.

“YAH! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?!” It was my sister.

Oh how I wish I didn’t have one…

I flinched, tripping on my own feet and falling off the edge. “Oh SHIIIIIT!!!” My wings weren’t ready, my whole self wasn’t ready. Her own fearful screaming started fading, turning into nothing but the air slicing through me.

I’m going to die.

I’m going to die.

I’m going to die.

…ing hate my sister.

I looked at my wings, forcing them to spread out while fighting against the wind and flipped myself over in one go. Now in the correct position and slowing down drastically. “O-Okay… I’m good, I’m good…” I chanted to myself, blinking away unknown tears and weakly flapping.

Maybe like a rift. A bump. I was up for a second, then back to my last position. After a moment or two, my eyes trailed back down to the sea, noting how far up we still were.

I have to dive down, then stop myself. –Well .

So, I pushed my arms into my chest and went head-on into the clear blue.

  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

I couldn’t force my arms out.

I couldn’t fix anything.

I needed to do it now!

The wind is too strong.

It’s pushing against me.

Like someone pinning me down.

I…can’t move!

The ground is getting close.

If I don’t stop soon… I’ll slam right into the village!

Nobody can see me.

Nobody can…

Unless I have given them my blessing…

Nobody

I-I’m going… to die alone…

W-W-Why didn’t I listen?

Why didn’t I stay at home?

Someone...

Someone...

Someone please….

Someone help me!

Tears leaked out of my eyes, blocking my sight as I cried. Arms bound to my sides, unable to be moved. The earth was only a few feet away. Bile rose in the back of my throat.

There wasn’t anyone near. Nobody close. I was truly alone. I could imagine it. My death. The cracking of a skull, blood splatter on the ground. Maybe my own body would break into pieces. Who knows?

I’m about to find out though…

Who would save me?

Noona isn’t fast enough…

Mother is not at home.

Dad… I don’t know where he was…

Mother is probably adventuring around again, as she always told me.

Dad said he’d always help us.

Even Mother, though I knew he hated her.

Dad… save me.

Please… save me.

I’m begging you!

Please!

“DADDY HELP ME!!!!”

Something grabbed the back of my shirt.

My nose was touching the soil, inhaling life and spirits around me.

“W-W-W-Who…”

A soothing voice calmed me. “Shhh… it’s okay. You’re okay… I’ve got you…” It murmured, lifting me to drop me on the ground, panting softly behind me. I turned, tears streaming down my cheeks when seeing my Father in his Deity form, eyeing me with concern.

“D-Daddy!” I wailed, hugging his serpent self and crying on his shoulder. He let me, nosing my hair and away salty tears with a snake-like tongue. “You’re okay… See? You’re perfectly fine. Trust your Dad on this one.”

“D-Dad…h-h-how did you…?”

He sailed behind me, biting on my shirt collar and slowly pulling me into the air once again. “There’s a reason I was known as a Shadow. Being fast has its perks.” Was all Father told me.

Father rode the wind, flapping his long wings slowly, making his way up the currents. “Daddy…” He grunted, moving as if he wasn’t flying, rather walking on the air itself. “I-I’m sorry…”

“It’s alright. Just… if you’re going to try and leave, let me help you.” I choked on my tears, sobbing loudly the rest of the way back home.

  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

“YOU DAMN CHILD!” Mother slapped me across the face, a purple bruise already rising from my pale skin. Not that I cared. What I was more concerned on was the musk of another man on her flesh.

It wasn’t Father’s, so whose was it?”

…That was my next mistake.

  •
  •
  •
  •
  •

She would never come home anymore.

She was always out.

Always adventuring, apparently.

Noona and I noticed it.

We saw how Daddy would stay at home.

How he would no longer visit the village.

He would stay with us, putting on a fake smile.

Which we returned.

I heard Noona crying one day.

She hugged me tight and kept apologizing to me.

“M-Momma… i-is cheating!”

I think I was supposed to cry with her.

But I didn’t.

Instead, I said this…

“I know.”

And left to my Daddy’s room, hugging him and sleeping with him that night. I think he knew too. His eyes were red and puffy. And he was never in his human form, always in the Deity form and sleeping his days away.

I...

I remember when I punched her in the face.

It was when Dad died.

The reason?

…A broken heart. A ing broken heart.

We saw her again one last time, after abandoning us.

After leaving us to die.

Leaving us to fit her selfish needs.

And… she—she…

I couldn’t help but laugh at her.

Right in front of her, tears running down my face.

A bright smile when seeing her sad face directed to me.

She came back with a man.

A man I didn’t know of.

Then… it all made sense.

Why she never came home.

Why she never stayed with us.

Why she had that necklace.

Why she never cared for us.

Why...

Why she abandoned us, for good.

She made a new home.

She found a new man.

She found a new family.

No—scratch that…

She made a new family.

And left us.

For a new beginning.

And… I couldn’t help but laugh.

“Y-You…!” I grinned, pointing at my Mother. She smiled at me in pity, reaching out for me. My body jerked away, still laughing loudly. “And her new man… amirite?” The villager was silent, hiding his two kids behind him.

“Yah, yah, yah! Show me my new siblings! Noona, come ‘ere! Look at what this brought!” Noona laughed with me, makeup ruined and looking like . “We got some little brothers! See?” I cooed over the one with curly locks, pinching his cheeks with a genuine smile.

“If only I could’ve met you sooner, little brother.” He stared at me with big, innocent eyes. The other one was with Noona, being a kind soul and wiping away her black tears.

“Hey, … do you mind leaving? Like you’ve done for the past ten years? And this time… don’t you dare try and come back.” I growled, pushing her away and patting the child’s head before standing tall. “And take your man too, while you’re at it.” Noona pressed a trembling kiss on the other kid, letting him wave bye to her and scurry to his father.

“Don’t speak to your mother like that.” The new man snapped, slapping me in the face. It echoed like a gun shot. Noona was by my side, fussing over me before glaring at him. “Don’t hit my brother!”

“Ha…” I sniffed, spitting out blood right in his face and smiling wide. “She’s not my mother. I’ve never had a mother.”

“Darling…” She whispered, touching my cheek and pressing her thumb against it. My eyes flared, scaring the woman and making her step back. “Don’t touch me with those hands! You killed Dad! Wanna know his symptoms? THEY WERE OF A BROKEN HEART!! Surprised? Don’t be. ‘Cause he ing loved your cheating-!”

“Momma… you killed someone?” One of her sons asked with wide eyes. “No!” She hissed, glaring at me. “This isn’t your home. We aren’t your family. He isn’t your family! So why are you here?!”

“…I just wanted to see him… and speak to him…”

“About what?”

“A divorce.”

She never did a divorce.

After all these years.

When they could have just talked…

And she be out of our lives…

Forever.

“YOU RUINED OUR LIVES!” I screeched, landing a sharp jab to her jaw and seeing her fall to the ground with wide eyes. “I hope Lucifer takes your soul and devours it!” Noona pointed to the glass stairway, screaming for them to leave. “Leave our broken family. You aren’t a part of it. Not anymore.”

I grabbed the new man’s collar and threw him off our home, down the stairs. Mother followed with a pained gasp, leaving her children who stared at us innocently. “Heya. Follow your momma and father.” I murmured sweetly, seeing them nod and run to the stairs, giggling as they walked on ‘air’ in their minds. “Did you…?” Noona began, wiping her tears with a hand.

“Yeah. I erased their memories. It’s best if they don’t remember us.”

“Mhm… S-So…were you serious?”

I nodded, stuffing my hands into my pockets and looming over the staircase where they walked. “I’ve wanted to leave for a while. Besides, I’ll remember my last family member. Noona… I’ll never forget you, okay?” She pulled me into a hug, pressing soft kisses on my cheeks with new tears.

“Better visit me, okay?” She whispered, placing one last kiss on my lips. I smiled, turning away from her and spreading my wings, all four. “I promise. I-I love you, Noona.”

“Love you too…”

I soared into the sky, diving down to follow the trail of the stairway and smiling when seeing my Mother’s shocked face. Right before I slammed her head onto the glass, leaving the heartbroken family to mourn over the new death.

“A life for a life, you told me.”

Maybe now…

I...

Can finally forget her…

Like how she did to us…

“A child of the Deities was forgotten. . .”

By the way... Erm...I based the look of them... on the Deity Kukuklkan. I'll see if I can post an image, if it'll show up, you know? Comment, and tell me what I need to work on, so I can get better as I continue. Bye.
