Chapter 11

Their dinner was awkward, to say the least. Key had no idea what to say to Jonghyun, while Jonghyun didn’t know what to say to Key. Taemin and Minho were trying to figure out how to break the ice between the two. For a long while the only sound that was audible was the soft clatter of silverware against the plates.

“Oh, that reminds me, did you decide on where you’re going to stay?” Key asked Jonghyun. The vampire blinked, unsure of how to answer him, and unsure of how this silence reminded Key of Jonghyun’s housing situation. Minho looked at Jonghyun questioningly,

“You aren’t going to stay here?” He wondered. Jonghyun flushed and replied,

“I-I mean, I could stay here, but I don’t want to be a burden.” This made Minho chuckle,

“Since when?” Jonghyun gave Minho an irriated look.

“Well sorry for thinking of my protected-“

“What did you say?” Key spoke, interrupting Jonghyun.

“Protected?” Jonghyun repeated with a questioning tone. Key sighed and said,

“I gave you a chance, but I don’t think you’ve proven yourself worthy, especially to refer to me as your protected.” Jonghyun was now confused.

“What?” Key picked up his plate and said, “You’re going to need to prove to me that you’re worthy of being my guardian.” Jonghyun could not believe his ears. His eyes followed Key into the kitchen and his body began to follow too,

“Jonghyun, don’t do anything stupid!” Minho warned, but the older went into the kitchen,

“Who the hell do you think you are?” He demanded. Key turned to him, “Am I not good enough for you or something?” Jonghyun questioned. Key was taken by surprise,

“That’s not what I meant.” He said. “Really? Is a guardian that easy to replace by your standards? This is why I hate humans, you’re weak, pathetic, and useless creatures that think you own the place.” Key arched a brow, “If humans are that bad for you, why did you ask me to be your protected?” Jonghyun turned silent; he couldn’t reveal that this was a bet. Key took the silence as a form of surrender and left the kitchen. He moved up the stairs to his room after saying goodnight to Minho and Taemin.

Minho rubbed his temples in frustration and annoyance, “You just had to say something, didn’t you.” He stated. A little annoyed, Jonghyun looked at Minho confused and still fuming, “I don’t get, what did I do?” He asked. Taemin looked at Jonghyun and said,

“Key hyung doesn’t trust you, and he has every reason not to.” Jonghyun arched a brow,

“Really, and he trusts you two like he trusts his own mother.” He said sarcastically. Minho chimed in then, “that’s not the point, Jonghyun. Key has never had a guardian. The real guardian, aka you, did not show up when he was supposed to so he feels like he can’t trust you because of that.” Jonghyun sighed and sat down on the couch,

“So what do I do?” Taemin looked at Jonghyun who was pondering up ideas,

“Show him that he can trust you.” He said before taking the rest of the dishware into the kitchen. Minho sat down next to the vampire and replied,

“He’s right, Jonghyun. You have to show Key that he can trust you. Besides, if he can’t trust you, then the bond between can’t form.” Jonghyun looked at Minho rather curiously,

“The bond?” Minho nodded,

“Yeah, the bond between your protected and you. It’s through this bond that you connect with your protected so that if they ever need help they’ll call out for you and you’ll be there.” Minho explained. He sounded a lot calmer and wiser as if he were a philosopher of some kind.

“Well, for now, try and find a place to sleep.” Minho said with a sigh. Jonghyun looked around the house, he didn’t like it, it was too stuffy for him,

“I’ll take the roof.” He said getting up from the couch and heading to the door. Minho was confused, “the roof?!” Jonghyun nodded, “yeah, its fresh air and the closest thing to freedom, for the time being. Well, good night, don’t let the bed bugs bite.”

Once he left the house, Jonghyun leapt up to the roof, almost cat like. He tried to make himself comfortable on the triangular shaped roof and once he did so, he looked up at the stars,

“Even the stars are far away from here, back home they were so close you could practically reach out and touch them.” He decided that he would hurry and finish this so he could get back home and watch those stars. His eyes drifted shut and he fell asleep.
