Chapter 10

Guardian

Chapter 10

Jonghyun helped Key carry the groceries home, that evening. They didn’t really talk to one another, Jonghyun was silent and Key assumed that Jonghyun didn’t want to talk at the moment. Honestly, though, Key was too shocked, too surprised by all of this. Key never expected to receive a guardian after all of these years, he had convinced himself that he would remain alone, but a vampire came to him and asked, no, told him that he was his guardian. It was a bit bizarre if not unusual.

Guardians, no matter what sort creature they were, had to come to their protected. It was unusual and unheard of for a guardian to come out and ask a human if they could be their guardian.

“How far away do you live?” Jonghyun wondered. He was starting to sound tired, and Key couldn’t blame him he was carrying all of his groceries.

“I live a little ways away from the market, but we’re almost there. If the bags are too much, then give them to me so you’re not pulling all of the weight.” Key stopped and looked at him. Jonghyun shook his head,

“I’m fine, it’s just we’ve been walking around for a bit, so I was curious.” Key nodded giving him a small smirk that decorated his sarcastic facial expression,

“Uh-huh, sure.” Jonghyun looked at the younger. He felt the younger boy’s hand grabbing the grocery bags from his hand,

“Come on, let’s go.” He said again, leading the way. Jonghyun blinked in confusion,

He took the heaviest bags…he’s not forcing me to carry them? Perhaps, I was wrong about humans…or is he just making me look bad?

Breaking into a jog, Jonghyun caught up with Key as he was turning corner,

“Jonghyun, you don’t mind that I have roommates living with me.” The vampire arched a brow,

“Roommates? Are you expecting me to live with you?” He wondered. Key shrugged,

“I don’t know, it’s up to you, I’m letting you know, that’s all.” Jonghyun was able to hear some disappointment in his voice, but there was still something else in his voice; sadness.

When Jonghyun took a glimpse of Key’s house, he wanted to whine, but he couldn’t. His house wasn’t as large as Jonghyun’s granted Key’s didn’t have a giant tree as part of his house.

“Here we are.” Key said gaining Jonghyun’s attention. Jonghyun followed him inside, the house was quite spacious. The door opened right into the living room where there was a couch facing a fire place and two love seats across from each other, a coffee table placed in the middle of the three seating areas.

“Taemin, Minho, I’m back.” Key announced as he took off his shoes. Jonghyun mirrored Key’s actions and stepped inside the house taking the grocery bags as he stepped inside. Taemin and Minho came into the room the younger smiling, “Hey, welcome back hyung. Let me help you with stuff, oh, who’s this?” The younger wondered looking at Jonghyun with interest, Minho smirked, seeing Jonghyun with Key just look right to him,

“Well, well, if it isn’t Jonghyun.” He continued smiling,
“What made you finally get a protected?” Jonghyun smiled and replied,

“Let’s just say that I was persuaded.” Minho knew that talking about the subject more would make Key suspicious so he stopped the conversation. Key carried the bags into the kitchen and, with Taemin’s help, began to unload the bags.

“Key hyung, who is Jonghyun?” Taemin wondered as he placed the products on the counter. Key sighed and answered,

“He claims to be my guardian.” The younger boy’s eyes widened,

“But you said you didn’t have one, what happened?” Key smiled and replied,

“He told me that he was supposed to be my guardian from the beginning, but he was sleeping at the time and didn’t show up. Now he wants me to give him a chance.” The younger leaned against the counter,

“And you agreed?” Key mirrored Taemin’s position and said,

“I’m giving him a chance, it’s not everyday that a vampire asks to be your guardian and besides, you and Minho are making me soft hearted.” The younger couldn’t help but smile,

“Good that means you’re opening up to us.” Key brought his attention back to Taemin and said,

“It feels weird.” The younger chuckled at the older and continued helping him in the kitchen.

Meanwhile, Jonghyun sat down on the couch, a smile plastered on his face. Minho joined his friend on the couch,

“Jonghyun, listen, I didn’t mean to make this into a bet.” He said so only Jonghyun could hear him. This made the vampire chuckle and reply,

“Too bad, you can’t take it back now.” Minho looked at Jonghyun, completely appalled by his answer,

“Jonghyun, you don’t want to mess with Kibum. I’m sure he wasn’t thrilled to know that you’re the guardian that didn’t show up.” The older shrugged,

“But he did accept me, now all I have to do is be his guardian for a week and you’ll do my hunting.” Jonghyun said smiling happily. He then looked at Minho and added,

“Either way, I win.” Minho sighed and thought,

This is not going to end well, I can feel it.
