Han Sanghyuk

Two Best Friends

I do not own the music or video.

Roobi was so happy about seeing her aunt again and being able to see her mom all smiles for the whole day, she forgot one important "thing".

Roobi’s family drove into a big neighborhood with huge, elegant houses.

“Wow!” Hyunsoo, Roobi’s younger brother, exclaimed. “The houses are so big!”

Roobi’s eyes widened in amazement. What a beautiful neighborhood. They drove past luxurious houses, which shined and sparkled, and stopped at a light blue one, which gave off a warm and welcoming vibe. "Han’s Residence" was engraved on the gates. They parked outside and got off. Roobi’s mom rung the bell.

“Who is it?” A man’s voice answered.

“Junsu? It’s me, Yoojung!” Roobi’s mom answered back.

“Honey, Yoojung’s family is here!” The man shouted excitedly and the gates opened.

Roobi and her family walked in and marveled at the big garden which consisted of many different kinds of flowers. Roses, sunflowers, and daisies all stood proudly in place, facing the bright sunlight. In the corner, there was a huge apple tree with a set of swings. Her aunt came out to greet them.

“Yoojung!” She exclaimed excitedly. “Omo, Hyunsik oppa!” She grabbed Roobi's father's hand and shook it.

Soon her husband came out as well. “Yoojung! Hyunsik!” He came and gave them each a hug.

“It’s so good to see you again Junsu!” Roobi’s dad grinned.

The man turned to Roobi and her brother. “This must be Roobi and Hyunsoo!”

“Hello!” Roobi and Hyunsoo bowed.

He chuckled and invited them in. “Come in! The food is getting cold!”

They all walked in while chatting. The interior of the house was just as amazing as the outside. The first thing Roobi noticed when she walked in was the wooden floors. The furniture and decorations were all simple. There was a bookcase filled with books and trophies. A few pictures were hung on the walls. The living room had a little fireplace, a small TV, a white couch, and a wooden coffee table. There was a huge window in the back with plants aligned on the window sill. The simplicity of the house gave off not only an elegant feel but also a cozy feel. They were guided into the dining room. A big table sat it the middle of the room and tons of dishes sat on the table, waiting to be eaten. Roobi her lips. Seeing all that food only made her more hungry. They all sat down. Roobi was just about to dig in until her aunt exclaimed.

“Omo! I almost forgot!” She chuckled. She turned her head and called out, “Han Sanghyuk!”

*Han Sanghyuk?* Just as she was gathering her thoughts, a tall, handsome boy walks in.

“Sanghyuk?” Roobi’s parents questioned.

“Hello.” He greeted Roobi’s parents with a huge grin. Roobi’s parents smiled back at him. He looked around and his eyes landed on Roobi.

*Hyuk..* How could she forget. Her childhood best friend. Han Sanghyuk.

He didn’t say a word. Roobi stared back at him in silence.

*Why isn’t he saying anything? Does he not recognize me? Does he even remember me?* She thought.

His eyes suddenly lit up and he ran to Roobi, pinching her cheeks immediately. “Roobi!” He grinned. Roobi grinned back widely, until she felt a sting on her cheek.

“Ow!” She yelped.

Hyuk was pinching her way too hard.

“You can let go now..” She whispered through her teeth. Instead of letting go, he only pinched harder.

“I missed you so much, Roobi!” He said in a exaggerated tone. He let go and Roobi’s cheek glowed red.

She shot him a death glare. He hasn’t changed one bit. The whole family started to talk about old memories.

“Remember when Roobi tripped and pulled on the table cloth?”

“And then the cake flew and..and..” They bursted out laughing.

It was Hyuk’s 7th birthday. Little kids ran rampant across the backyard.

“Slow down kids!” Hyuk’s mom said, trying to deliver the tray of noodles to the table. She placed the tray down and went back into the kitchen.

“You can’t catch me!” Roobi giggled and ran away from Hyuk. She picked up speed. Hyuk was losing her.

“Yah! Get back here!”

Roobi laughed and ran even faster. She was so focused that she didn’t see the cat that casually sat in front of her.

“Whoa!” She quickly jumped over the cat and lost balance. She flung her arms out for support and grabbed a table cloth. The cloth slipped and the cake went flying up.

“I’ve got you now, Lee Roobi!” Hyuk grinned as he neared her. Suddenly the cake appeared in his sight. As if time slowed down, he blinked as the cake slowly approached his face, inching closer and closer. He put one hand up to cover his face. Splat. The cake hit him and he fell backwards. Cake splattered all over his face and shirt. He wiped the frosting off his eyes and wailed.

“Mommy!!!” Tears fell endlessly as he cried out loud.

All the kids stopped and stared at him.

“Omo! Sanghyuk!” His mom came and wiped the cake off his face. He still continued to cry.

Roobi's laugh grew louder by the second. "Ahahaha!!!!" She clutched her stomach.

Hyuk shot her a glare and quickly changed the topic.

“Oh yeah, remember that time when Roobi got in trouble and had to stay after class?”

At his words, Roobi immediately stopped laughing and her face turned red with embarrassment.

“Roobi, hurry or we’ll be late!” Her mom shouted outside.

Roobi dashed down the stairs and out the door. She jumped into the car and they drove off.

In class, the kids were playing rock, paper, scissors, until the teacher came in.

“Sit down kids.” The kids scrambled to their seats.

“Okay, pass up yesterday's homework.” Roobi quickly reached into her backpack and pulled out a piece of paper. Without carefully looking, she passed it up.

The teacher flipped through the papers and stopped at one. He pulled it out and took another look at it.

“Lee Roobi.” He called.

Roobi raised her head, surprised.

“I need to see you for a moment.”

Roobi got up from her seat and went to the teacher’s desk. He took out her paper and showed her it.

Roobi looked at it and gasped. There was a poorly drawn person on it. MR. BYUN was written on the side and the words ‘FATTY’ were written with an arrow that pointed to the person.

“What is that?” She asked, surprised.

“That’s what I wanted to ask you.” He pointed to the right corner of the paper. Roobi’s name was written there.

“WHAT?” She exclaimed. “THAT’S NOT MINE!”

“Lying is not good, Roobi. I’ll see you after class.” He excused her.

“But..but..”

The teacher gave her a look and she walked back to her desk.

*Han Sanghyuk..* She thought, angrily. She could recognize that messy handwriting anywhere. She glared at him and he innocently shrugged his shoulders. For the rest of the day, Roobi couldn’t stop worrying. Suddenly a paper slipped in front of her. She opened it and read it.

I heard that all the students who see Mr. Byun after class get eaten. Thats why his stomach is so big.

Next to the text was a drawing of a man holding up a girl’s head with his mouth open. She turned around and saw Hyuk grin at her.

*Why that little..*

Maybe it was because she was gullible or she was too worried, but at the back of her head she couldn’t help but be afraid. The bell rang and students ran out. Roobi tried to make a dash for it but the teacher caught her.

“Just a minute, Lee Roobi.” She stopped in her tracks and turned around. The teacher got up, holding a fork and knife. He approached her.

*It can’t be..* Without another thought, Roobi rushed out the door.

“Lee Roobi!” The teacher called after her. Roobi ran for her life, however she tripped over herself and fell. The teacher came out and rushed over to her.

“Are you okay, Lee Roobi?” He tried to help her up.

“I’m so sorry! Please! Please don’t eat me!” She wailed. The other students gave her weird looks and some cracked up. One particular laugh rang out loudly. Roobi looked up while tears continued to fall. Hyuk was laughing so hard his face turned bright red. At that moment, Roobi suddenly realized it. Hyuk lied to her. He pranked her.

“HAN SANGHYUK!” She screamed at the top of her lungs.

Roobi was too embarrassed to say anything. The room was roaring with laughter. “Ahaha! I still remember her face when she came home that day. She looked like she was about to explode!” Her dad commented, making everyone laugh even harder.

Afterwards, they shared more stories, caught up with each other’s lives, and laughed until their stomach hurt. Roobi and Hyuk communicated through face expressions and actions the whole time. Hyuk made a face at her. She would glare at him and kick him under the table. After everyone finished eating, they all made their way to the living room. The four adults talked about work and recent news. Roobi followed Hyuk to his room. His room was filled with tons of toys and action figures. She looked around. Hyuk sat on his bed and started to look Roobi up and down.

“Someone’s all grown up now.” He joked.

She scoffed and sat on his mini futon. “So.. how’s life?” Roobi tried to start a conversation.

“It’s been great, ever since I saw you again that is.”

“Ugh.” She still couldn’t help but smile. He’s still the same playful Hyuk from ten years ago. Her eyes wandered around his room. She looked at all his posters and pictures. Then, her eyes landed on a package on his desk. He followed her gaze.

“Oh, that’s my uniform. Seoul High.” He commented.

“Ah..” She mumbled. Then it hit her. “S-SEOUL HIGH??”

“Yeah.. what’s wrong?”

“S-Seoul High.. that’s where I go…”

“Really? That’s great then! That means I get to see you everyday from now on!” He exclaimed, with a mischievous grin on his face.

Even if he was her childhood best friend, she knew how much of a trouble maker he was. She still couldn’t wrap her head around the fact that she actually survived elementary school with him around. He drove the teachers crazy, he drove his classmates crazy, he even drove his friends crazy sometimes.

“Roobi! Time to go home! It’s getting late!” Roobi snapped out of her thoughts and made her way to the door.

“See you tomorrow Roobi!” Hyuk cutely waved at her with a big grin.

She gave an uneasy smile, waved her hand weakly, and left.
