The Sleepover

Tangled

Oh.

My.

God.

I’m going to Taeyeon’s house.

Oh my gosh.

I’m actually going to Taeyeon’s house!

This is unbelievable… who would have thought that this night would end up like this, because I for sure did not. All I wanted to do was talk to her about Hyoyeon training at SM and now I’m goi-

Oh my gosh!!

I’m spending the night at her house… her house! I-

“Watch out, the door is kinda heavy,” she warned. “Don’t let it slam.”

Omo.

“Uh, ne~,” I replied as she held the door open long enough for me to grab it. I made sure to carefully shut the door behind me and- oh wow…

Her house was a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be.

As we walked to her house, which was only thirty or so feet behind her neighbor’s, I could already tell it was one of the smaller ones on the street. Just the two on either side of it were both a lot bigger in comparison. Then what really surprised me was that the already small two story building that we entered was then again made even smaller by separating the two floors.  I guess one family lived on the first floor and by the looks of Taeyeon heading up the set of stairs I bet it was safe to say that that’s where she lived.

It didn’t really matter to me how big her house was, but I was pretty confused.

Earlier when Jessica told me that the school Taeyeon and her friends attend is the same one her little sister attends, and that it’s a pretty upscale private school, I got the impression that her house would be nothing less than a mansion.

Oh well! I guess there must just be two schools with that name. Jessica doesn’t know what she’s talking about half the time anyway.

I followed Taeyeon up the short set of stairs and waited for her to unlock the next door but my brain was in serious overdrive now. I might have been drowsing off five minutes ago, but I don’t think I could have been more awake in this moment.

What was her house going to be like?

Omo, scratch that. What was her room going to be like?

Was it going to be messy? Super clean? Pink?

Okay, that one made me laugh.

It’s not like I knew Taeyeon that well or anything but I just could not picture that girl falling asleep in a bright pink room every night.

Wah! Regardless, I was excited. I wanted to know more about her and I couldn’t think of a better way to learn than being in the place she calls home. They say a person's home is a reflection of their soul and I couldn’t wait to see what hers was like. She opened the door, but stopped mid-way to turn and look at me again.

“My mom’s probably asleep so try not to make a lot of noise, okay?” I nodded instantly.

The last thing I wanted to do was wake up her mom at this hour the first time I visit. Oh my gosh, talk about bad first impressions…

She nodded back at me and then opened the door wide open. I thanked her for holding it for me and then excitedly took a few steps inside.

Heol… my eyes shot from wall to wall trying to take in everything and I couldn’t shake just how warm this place felt. The sofa looked perfectly worn in, the refrigerator was covered in various papers and drawings, and there were pictures all over just like I had seen in countless TV shows and movies.

It was so weird in the best possible way.

I didn’t get to look for long though unfortunately, Taeyeon was motioning for me to follow her toward a set of two doors. She pointed out that the one on the right was the bathroom and-

“And this is mine and Hyo’s room,” she said softly while opening the door.

Omo.

This is it. I’m going in her room.

My heart started beating faster and faster and I really don’t think I’ve ever been this curious about anything before in my life.

Kim Taeyeon, who are you and what are you doing to me?

_________________________________________

The room was nothing spectacular, actually it was pretty small but just like the rest of her house it felt undeniably warm.

It wasn’t super clean or messy… or pink unfortunately. Actually the walls were an off white almost vanilla color and the floor was light brown wood. They had one of those bunk beds where the bottom bunk was a bigger size than the top and- omo.

I had to laugh.

While I could see more pictures spread lovingly throughout the room on the shelves and such, there was one that I’ve definitely seen a few thousand times before.

Taeyeon looked at me almost instantly at the sound of my laugh and I could only point at the medium sized poster of me hanging on the celling over top of the bunk bed. I had no idea what to say.

“That’s Hyoyeon’s bunk,” she said defensively.

“How cute,” I laughed. Actually I didn’t know what was cuter; Taeyeon making sure that I knew it wasn’t her poster or Hyoyeon having the poster in the first place.

I think the poster of BoA I had hanging in my room when I was her age was just about the same size.

I already figured it wasn’t Taeyeon’s though; she didn’t have to get so defensive. I mean she obviously slept on the bottom since it was bigger and why would a person who’s not a fan of me at all have my poster over their bed? It just didn’t-

Oh my gosh, what if it was hers though? What if she secretly-

“Yeah, you can sleep on my bed if you want,” she offered, interrupting my delusional thoughts. “I wouldn’t want to stare at myself while I’m falling asleep either.”

I nodded.

Right, it’s Hyoyeon’s bunk, not Taeyeon’s.

Damn my wishful thinking…

“Thank you.” She grinned.

“Don’t thank me, you wouldn’t want to sleep up there anyway,” she chuckled. “Hyoyeon eats sometimes when she sleeps so who knows how many crumbs are up there.” I smiled at the thought of little Hyoyeon sleep eating and- “Yeah, I’m gonna change the sheets now that I’m thinking about it,” Taeyeon said hilariously. I laughed.

“That might be a smart move.” She hummed and went to the top bunk.

Quickly stripping the covers and wrapping them up, she then moved down the tiny ladder and started to do the same thing to her bed. I-

Omo, wait!

“Oh you don’t have to do that,” I said after she pulled one corner up. “I can sleep on these, it’ll be fine.”

I understood the need to get rid of the crumbs in Hyoyeon’s bunk, but I’m sure Taeyeon didn’t eat in her sleep too. She was already letting me stay here like this, she didn’t need to over exert herself!

“Ani,” she said while shaking her head. “I don’t eat in my sleep or anything, but it will still make me feel better.” She laughed. “You’re my guest and it’s been awhile since they were changed, so I think it’s about time for a fresh set anyway… it is kinda my fault you’re stuck here anyway so...”

I internally swooned at the words ‘my guest’ but I don’t think I would necessarily call this ‘stuck’. I was thoroughly enjoying being in Taeyeon’s house… and I don’t think she should be blaming herself for all this in the first place either since it was all totally my fault.

I started this whole chain of reactions after hitting Taeyeon with the door earlier. Ugh, if only I hadn’t been so excited to talk to her…

“Hey, don’t say that,” I tried to assure. “You were just trying to get us away from the paparazzi Taeyeon, and it worked. Thank you for that.” She chuckled.

“Yeah, but still, my house isn’t like the Hilton or wherever you usually stay so I know it isn’t much.” I grinned.

She was sweet.

“Aniyo, don’t worry about that. It’s really charming,” I said honestly.

I wish half the hotels I stayed in felt like this place. I don’t think I’d ever want to leave them.

“Right~,” she held out sarcastically. “Whatever, I’m gonna throw these in the wash. If you want to change or something just uh, go ahead… I’ll wait.”

Uh…

“Huh? Change? Change for what?”

What in the world was she-

“For bed,” she asked questioningly. “Unless you’re one of those weird people who can sleep in jeans…”

“Oh!”

Duh~ Tiffany come on…

“No-uh-I didn’t bring anything to change into so I’m fine. Thank you though.” She stared at me with her arms full of blankets for another few seconds before letting her head drop in front of her.

What the-

“Fine,” she sighed. “Wear something of mine, it gets really cold in here after a while, okay?”

“Uhm, okay. I-“

“Pants are in the dresser, shirts are in the closet. Let me know when you’re finished,” she said quickly before walking out the door. I heard her mumbling something about the words ‘shorts’ and ‘winter’ on her way out and smiled.

I don’t think I’d need pants or another sweatshirt at all. The thought of Taeyeon being concerned about me made me feel all the warmth I needed. I don’t know what it was but my stomach felt bubbly, my head felt spin-y, and my heart felt, well… thumpy.

I know those aren’t the best words of expression, or real words at all, but my brain just couldn’t process enough to come up with the proper words for this right now.

I too thought the stylists’ idea to put me in these shorts after my concert was pretty stupid since it was still pretty chilly out, but since I also thought I would be going straight into into my comfy warm bed at home right afterward I didn’t really feel the need to argue.

Now I don’t think I could thank her enough though. Her stupidity caused me to see that Taeyeon actually cared about me. If she really didn’t like me she could’ve easily let me freeze all night or something, but she didn’t! She told me to wear her clothes instead.

I know it clearly isn’t a sign of love or even that we’re best friends now or something, but it definitely showed me that Taeyeon didn’t dislike me as much as I thought she did.

Her cold attitude and obvious indifference toward me had me seriously worrying before, but this…

This definitely changes things… right?

I hoped so at least. I-

KNOCK

Omo! She’s already back? I didn’t even have time to change!

Well, I guess that was kind of my fault since my head was, and still is, going a little nuts.

“Are you finished?”

Crap.

“Uh, no. I haven’t started,” I replied back. The door swung open and Taeyeon popped her head in adorably.

“Why not,” she questioned with a raised brow.

Oh my gosh, how was she so cute?

“I- uhm, was trying to find an outlet,” I lied. “My phone is about to die.”

My phone was at least half charged.

She took a few step in a tilted her head to the side like an adorably confused puppy.

I could’ve squealed.

“There’s one right there though,” she said as she pointed under the desk… right in plain sight. I looked at it and mentally cursed.

“Wow, I can’t believe I didn’t see that one,” I said. I also wasn’t looking though so… “Thanks.”

I quickly pulled my phone charger out and plugged it into the wall even though it didn’t need it. I heard Taeyeon mumble ‘whatever’ again as she put the new sets of sheets on the bed.

I couldn’t even believe myself. This girl is making me seem like a complete idiot.

Pull yourself together Hwang, I told myself firmly. I have to leave a good impression.

“I’ll go change in the bathroom, so uh… just please hurry, okay? I’ve got to wake up really early…,” she trailed off.

Oh my gosh, I’m keeping her awake now too?!

That’s at least strike two already, I need to seriously get it together.

“Oh, I’m so sorry Taeyeon, I promise I’ll hurry.” She nodded.

“It’s okay, I’ll just grab my clothes and leave ya to it,” she said before digging through her dresser drawer. She grabbed a sweatshirt from her closet and then just like she said, she was gone.

Now I needed to really hurry!

__________________________________________

I changed with ease into her super comfortable clothes and felt very pleased with myself. I guess all these years of having to do insanely fast wardrobe changes mid concert really did help with something.

I decided on a pair of long black pajama pants and a bright yellow sweatshirt since there was no pink to be found.

How she could have literally no pink clothing seriously puzzled me, but I guess that’s just her style.

While I was up and close to her dresser though I couldn’t help but look at all the pictures across the top. They were so cute!

The first one that caught my eye was a semi old picture of Taeyeon and Hyoyeon hugging really tightly and I could feel my smile growing.

I don’t think I’ve seen her smile this big once in real life and I- nope. Never mind. The next picture reminded me just where I have seen it before.

It was a picture of Taeyeon and her two friends that came with her tonight. It looked pretty old too and that just showed me how close the three of them must be… and reminded me just how angry I was about that.

Okay, so I don’t know if I could call it anger, but I definitely got a little fired up when I saw Taeyeon and that Yoona girl laughing and smiling at each other the whole time during my backstage fan meeting. Taeyeon didn’t even talk to me once! Oh my gosh, and don’t even get me started on when Yoona fed Taeyeon that snack either I-

No.

Calm down Tiffany you don’t even know anything about the other girl. They’re probably just really good friends.

Exactly, I assured myself. From the looks of it they’ve been friends for a long time just like I have been friends with Sunny ever since I can remember.

Right.  I moved on to the next picture of a very young Hyoyeon squeezing the life out of a teddy bear and-

But what if they’re not only friends, my brain chimed in. I froze.

Oh my gosh… what if they’re dating? What if they’re in-

No.

No, no don’t.

Do not even think like that Tiffany, I told myself.

Just look at the next picture and stop assuming things.

Right.

I took a deep breath and examined the next photo.

It was probably the biggest of the photos in the room and I can understand why. All the other shots were probably from a disposable camera or at least ones that they took themselves while this one was done professionally.

It was of three girls. Taeyeon, Hyoyeon and some other girl that I’m guessing is their older sister. She looked almost exactly like Taeyeon but a lot older. If I had to guess ages, which I’m horrible at doing, I’d guess Taeyeon was about twelve, Hyoyeon five, and this girl… around twenty-two?

Wow their parents sure left big s in between but I guess my oppa is about seven years older than me now that I think about it so never mind that then. I-

“Great, you found the most embarrassing pictures in the whole room,” Taeyeon laughed from behind me. I jumped.

“Omo,” I said aloud at her voice. I felt like I had been caught doing something I wasn’t supposed to. “R-really?” She hummed.

“These are some of the oldest ones in here,” she smiled. “Oh, I got you a glass of water. I didn’t know if you were thirsty or not but I like to have a glass by my bed just in case so I brought you one too…,” she said quickly before trailing off. “Or not that’s okay too, I can have two. I-“

“Thank you Taeyeon,” I said with a smile while taking the drink.

For some reason it seemed like she had suddenly become nervous and it was seriously the cutest thing I’ve seen all day. It was almost like she had never had a guest over or something and it was adorable.

I took a quick sip of water and glanced at the pictures again… which reminded me.

“I’m sorry for… well, everything tonight,” I apologized. “I really didn’t mean to hit you with the door and keep you away from your sister and friends all night… I’m sure your girlfriend is mad,” I added at the last second.

I don’t know why, but I had to. It was burning me up inside and I really don’t think I would have been able to sleep without knowing the answer… Taeyeon choking on the drink of water she was mid-taking was surely a good sign though.

“Girl-girlfriend,” she asked bewilderedly.

There were fireworks going off in my brain and angels were most definitely singing.

“Isn’t she your girlfriend,” I asked while pointing to the picture of Yoona on the stand. Taeyeon’s eyes darted to the photo and then she instantly burst into laughter.

“No, not at all,” she finally answered through laughs. “Im Yoona is the farthest thing from my girlfriend. She’s more like a sister, Sooyoung too. We’ve all been friends for years.” I nodded... and tried to hide just how happy that answer made me.

“Oh,” I laughed embarrassedly “Sorry~. Your uh-unnie is really pretty though,” I complimented. I needed to get off this topic quick before my smile completely gave it away. “That’s a totally good picture of you three.”

“Huh,” she asked with an even more confused look than last time.

Great.

I watched her eyes look to where my hand was pointing now and then close.

“Oh~. That’s not my sister, it’s my mom.” I could feel my eyes practically pop out of my head and Taeyeon must have noticed. “Yeah, she had me when she was about my age,” Taeyeon explained nonchalantly. “If she heard you say she looked like my unnie though I think you’d probably be her most favorite person in the world,” she laughed. “Hyoyeon points out her wrinkles like every day.”

She- I…

“Really?”

I didn’t know what to say. I had so many questions but I didn’t know where to start.

“Yeah, don’t let Hyo fool you, she’s a brat ninety percent of the time,” Taeyeon laughed. I looked at the picture again and it all became so clear.

That’s~ why it’s done professionally. It’s a family photo!

But wait…

“Where’s your dad,” I asked curiously… and instantly regretted it.

I could see the change in Taeyeon almost immediately and I seriously wanted to crawl in a hole and die.

Her posture stiffened, her grin vanished, and I swear it just got like ten degrees cooler.

I was glad I had the sweatshirt on, but I really could not get over how dumb that was of me.

Oh my god I am so stupid.

Why would I even ask something like that? I should know better.

I didn’t know if it was because I was caught up in my head or just that fact that I wanted to know more about Taeyeon… or maybe just because he obviously wasn’t in the family portrait and I was curious and I- I-

Ugh. Good going.

I knew the answer to my question and Taeyeon didn’t even respond yet.

“Gone,” she said firmly after a few seconds.

This had to be strike 9000.

“I am so sorry,” I said right away. “I don’t know why I asked that. My mom died when I was young too and I shouldn’t have said anything. I should’ve known better. I-“

“It’s fine,” she said cutting me off. “Just forget it… I’m sorry about yours too.”

“I,” I started, but I really, really didn’t know what to say now. “Thank you.” She hummed.

“I’m going to go to sleep,” she said with a clenched jaw. “I’m pretty tired and you must be too.”

“Oh, yeah,” I smiled softly, trying to lighten the now awkward mood. “A little.” She nodded again and then headed toward the bed.

I said ‘goodnight’ a few minutes later after the lights went out and she said it back, but hers was seriously the least sincere ‘goodnight’ I’ve ever heard in my life.

I could’ve cried.

How was I ever going to fix this?
