Quote and Unquote: First Date

Yuri 1/2

It was a chilly morning and Yunho was sipping his coffee while walking hurriedly from the parking. When he reached the outdoor skating stadium, Yuri was already sitting on one of the benches warming her hands with her breath. He stopped for a moment and enjoyed the scene. Aside from his mother and her sister, he hasn’t seen any women in his life this early. Many people would dare not. Girls would usually take long hours fixing themselves in front of the mirror just to be presentable in front of him. But Seobang is different. The Seobang in his sight has no make-up yet her face exudes so much beauty. She is such a natural. Yuri must have sense Yunho's presence because she stood up and started yelling! "Yah! You’re late! Not because you’re an idol you have an excuse not to come on time." Yunho quickened his pace that the coffee started dripping in his hand.

"Were you able to change the ice skates into another color?" Yuri asked. "Yeah. Here," he replied as he reached the box to Yuri. Yuri took the black skates and put it over her socks. "Are you sure you know how to skate on ice?" Yunho asked doubtedly. Yuri scratched her head and smiled sheepishly at him, "Actually it'll be my first time today." "Bwo? You volunteered when you really dont know how?" Yunho raised his voice. "Ok. If you don’t need my help I'll just go home and sleep." Yuri stood up and slung her bag on her shoulder. Yunho held her wrist and smiled, "Yadongsshi, it's too early to be so hot-tempered. You see, I was just kidding," Yunho replied cheekily. He pulled Yuri to sit beside him and took off her bag. He opened his own bag and took the box of roller skates.  He took one of them and started explaining "Basically, ice skates are very similar to roller blades. The wheels are linear same as the blades of the ice skates. The location of the brakes are both in front. The only difference is that in ice skates slightest footwork would move you from one place to another. However it's more dangerous too since there's too little or no friction at all. Get it?" Yuri just found out that Yunho has this dorky that she didn’t realize how mesmerized she was while he was talking. "Yadongsshi, did I make it clear or do I have to repeat myself?" Yunho spoke in a louder voice. "Ah ne ne ne. Let's try!" she stammered.

Yunho stood up first and offered his hand to Yuri. Yuri scoffed at him and said, "What do you lend that hand for? What do you think of me, disabled? Keep that hand to yourself, Jung Yunho!" "Aigoo! Your pride is sky's the limit. Araso. I’ll go ahead." Yunho replied as he walked his way towards the ice. When he reached there he faced Yuri and watched her stagger. She fell several times but none of those times she asked for help. "Yadongsshi, I don’t want a partner with black and blue backside. It will show if you wear skirt, you know! They may deduct points from us because of it. Besides, I don’t want a reputation of not knowing how to take care of my skating partners," Yunho teased. "Do you think I want a blabber mouth for a partner? And who told you I'd wear skirt! When hell freezes over."

Yunho was right. Ice skating and roller blading is quite similar. After just a few rounds on ice, Yunho was already teaching Yuri spins and jumps. The two were so engrossed with their practice that they didn't notice that people started crowding the rink already. "I think we can call it a day. Just teach me the choreography tomorrow in the studio so on Wednesday we can see how feasible it is on ice," Yuri said as she glided towards the exit gate of the rink. "Why are you such in a hurry? We don’t have dance rehearsals today. Unless you’re not telling me you have a date," Yunho said as he followed behind her. Yuri glared at him, "Do I look like the type who goes on a date? I want to leave because your fan girls might attack me. I still want to see the sunrise tomorrow."  Grrrr.. Unexpectedly, Yuri's tummy lurched in hunger. "Liar! Come, ill treat you for lunch." Yunho started walking towards the parking when he realized Yuri wasn’t following him.

"Yadongsshi, why do you walk so fast? The restaurants are on that side how come you’re going the other way?" Yunho asked as he widen his steps to catch up with Yuri. "Many people will recognize you in the restaurants so I’m thinking of taking you where no one will. Stay about 20 paces distance from me. Araso?" Yuri half-lied. She can really bear attacks from fan girls because she can still pretend as Seobang. The real reason why she doesn’t like to go there was because she might bump into her any members of her family. She doesn’t want any drama especially in front of her boss.

Yuri and Yunho reached a crowded and busy street. People were walking everywhere.  Shops and hawkers were here and there. Yunho put on his shades in the fear of being caught in a stampede of fans. "Dont worry, they won’t recognize you here. Can’t you see they are busy making a living," Yuri said. "Who knows? I’m Jung Yunho. One of the most wanted idol among middle-aged women." he boasted. Yuri scoffed as she opened the tent with her hand. They entered a cramped food stall and sat on a table for two. Yunho studied the menu. "Is these for real? It's been a long time since I have eaten in a place like this. I never knew meat is still cheap in places like this" Yunho said with amusement. He ordered several dishes enough to fill up another table besides theirs. Yuri took of her cap revealing her messy yet still y hair. She closed her eyes and whispered "Thank you for the food." Through his big sunglasses, Yunho enjoyed watching her every move uncensored. He liked the way she took big bites but chew them with finesse. He liked the way she wiped her sweat on the forehead as she ate heaty food. He liked the way she attacks the food as f it was her last meal. Yuri drank a glass of water and say, "Yah! wAren't ywou hwungrwy? You know wi am vwery capable wof finishing wall thwese. And could wyou please take woff your shades. wit's very disrespwectful" she said as was still stuffed with food. Yunho took it off and beamed at her. Aigoo! You're eyes and your smile are too bright that it can melt me. "I changed my mind. You look better with it on. Your face is very distracting." she stated a blunt fact

Their plates are already stacked high on one side of the table. Yuri finished sipping her cup of tea and Yunho munched his last bite of samgyupsal. The two heard the thunder roared and big drips of rain started to drum the tent. " Just this morning the weather is so warm, now it's already raining. How unpredictable," Yuri said. "Let's pay so we could go already,” she continued. Out of courtesy, Yunho stood up first and approached the counter. Yunho reached for his wallet and opened it. Cold beads of sweat run down his forehead when he realized he doesn’t have cash. "Ajhumma, do you accept card?" he whispered as if hiding a secret. The lady in the counter glared at him and started breathing deeply as if a bull ready to attack its target. "Bwo? You came here and ordered a lot of food then you’re going to tell me you don’t have cash? How dare you?" the lady rolled a newspaper into a stick and swatted Yunho's forehead and arms. Yunho was shocked by the action that he wasn’t able to dodge. He rubbed his forehead in pain, trying not to look at Yuri in embarrassment. The lady was about to make another swat when Yuri held the newspaper and gently laid it on the counter. She looked tenderly at Yunho and smiled, "Jagiya, I think you forgot that you let me keep your cash because it's too many to fit in your wallet. Ajhumma, how much is it again?" Yuri gave the money to the lady and bowed goodbye to her. She held Yunho's hand and said "Jagiya, let's go. We have lots of places to go to," she squeezed his hand and brought him outside the tent. "Treat your face! How dare you leave your house without money. She could’ve done worst to you or she could’ve called the police then media will feast on you. Do you know how much I’ll blame myself if something happened to you back there?" Rain dripped on Yuri's worried face while Yunho stood speechless looking at her. Yunho was about to say sorry when Yuri broke the eye contact and said, "Now let's really call it a day. That's your way home. Take off your jacket and try to cover yourself." Yuri said as she walked away.

Yunho started walking the opposite way. He turned back and watched her go. It dawned unto him that he cannot let the day end like that. He ran towards Yuri and asked her, “Yadongsshi, do you want to share this jacket and walk with me? I'll give you a ride home." Yunho offered. "Bwo? Do you honestly think that I’m disabled? I can go home by myself," Yuri scolded. "But you don’t have umbrella," Yunho argued. "Jung yunho, if I don’t like rain, I could’ve brought umbrella long time ago!" She walked and searched the ground for something Yunho was clueless of. He was just surprise when a puddle of water hit his face. Yuri burst into laughter which made Yunho furious. Yunho searched for a puddle of water and kicked some to her face too. Yuri didn’t expect Yunho to get back to her. Later, the two are childishly exchanging smashes of dirt and mud. They chase after each other as if they were children enjoying the rain. For a while, they have forgotten who they are and what they are. They just seized the moment.

Yuri hid in an alley, panting. She has mud on her hands just in case Yunho finds her. She leaned by the wall and slid down into a squat as she tried to catch her breath. To her surprise, Yunho leaped on her from out of nowhere. "Gotcha!" Yunho pinned Yuri on the ground. "Ne ne ne. I lost. But don’t make me too ugly with that dirt." she closed her eyes and giggled as she waited for Yunho to wipe her face with mud. Yunho paused and studied her face. Yadongsshi, you are beyond extraordinary. He suddenly felt his heart beat irregularly. He thought the moment was perfecly romantic - it was cold and rainy but most of all they were both happy. Should i kiss her or not? Yunho can’t help himself but inched his face towards Yuri's while his conscience was still on a constant battle whether to kiss her or not.

Yuri was offering her cheeck to Yunho. Her eyes were tightly shut, still anticipating the mud. 10 seconds… Aish! Why is he prolonging my agony? 15 seconds… Shall I just punch him in the stomach and leave? 20 seconds… Is he going to spit at me? Arghh! I can’t take this anymore! Yuri shook her head with the thought of being spit at and decided to face him. When she turned her head to Yunho's direction, her lips slid in his warm wet lips.

Yunho closed his eyes and kissed her while Yuri's eyes widened in surprised. She looked at Yunho's closed eyes and found it sincere.  She cannot describe her feeling - it was like the feeling she got when she purchased and used her first roller blades; it was like watching fireworks; it was like listening to a marching band; it was like on the loop of a roller coaster ride. It was a multitude of emotions all happening simultaneously. She doesn’t know what to do so she just let her instinct do the reacting. She closed her eyes and kissed back. So this is how first kiss feels like.
