"Good afternoon, Alice!" she looked behind her shoulder as she was reaching to grab a textbook of the shelf to see a young boy. Her eyes lit up with excitement at the sight of him, and suddenly, she couldn't contain her need to squeal with joy, even though they were currently in a library.
"Bambam?" Alice said turning around, "Oh my gosh, it's you!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around the boy's neck. He was struggling for air, and the librarian who was just around the corner gave them a mean look. Alice pulled back and the two had to bow their heads.
"It's been a while!" Alice exclaimed after the two exited the library and found a nice bench to sit at.
"Yeah, I guess so! It's been about two months. Three, maybe?" Bambam smiled, very charmingly at that.
Months ago, Alice had been asked to tutor a high school student by one of her professors. That professor had a student who needed catching up on a AP lesson, and that student was Bambam. The professor figured that because of Alice's clean note taking skills and calm demeanor, the tiny language barrier that Bambam had around him would be no problem for Alice to pass. After all, the girl worked best with people younger than her.
Bambam was quiet at first, but after going through the lesson and notes, he began to talk more to Alice. He turned out to be very funny and sweet. He was just quiet because he didn't have many friends. Alice empathized with the young boy and found happiness in teaching him, and even began to understand lessons better after going over them.
"Have you been studying well?" Alice asked, still smiling at the boy. He had gotten taller compared to the last time she saw him.
"Yeah. My Korean has been getting better, right?" the boy chuckled in reply. Alice nodded.
"It has. You're pronunciation is spot on," she added, playfully jabbing the boy in the shoulder. He just laughed and beamed at the girl's praise. "So why were you at the library? Studying again?" she asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
"Yeah, that, and I was getting some books so my mom and dad could learn some phrases,"
"Oh! Are they here right now?" Alice got excited because she knew how long Bambam had been living and studying alone in South Korea. His parents didn't always have the time to fly to the country to visit, so the boy had been living by himself in a dormitory for a couple of years now.
"Yeah! They flew in from Thailand yesterday. You should meet them," Bambam suggested, putting his checked out books into his bag.
"Oh, of course. Maybe sometime this week before they go back home, alright?" Alice nodded her head. Bambam did the same and brought out his cellphone.
"You should have my phone number," he said, tapping through buttons in his contact book, ready to add a new one.
"That sounds like a good idea. I'll give you mine, too," the girl said.
After exchanging numbers, Bambam slipped his cellphone into his pocket and waved to Alice as he began to walk home.
"I'll call you some time!" he exclaimed while walking, and Alice just waved and nodded. She was too in-thought to actually say something in reply.
She remembered her parents, not very well though. She knew she had her mother, father, and older brother, but everything else isn't so clear. Everything hasn't been clear since that accident. After that, she couldn't see her family ever again.
But she moved to her new town to forget all that. Alice shook her head and hit her cheeks a few times, swallowing down a painful memory that she had to store way back in her brain so she wouldn't have to remember that pain ever again. But then she wondered if it was better to try and remember that pain. She shook her head again. There were other
