Prologue
The Dark KingdomOnce upon a time there was a Kingdom that was ruled by a generous King and Queen, their perfect children, and they had shining knights that were loyal only to the crown and to the people of the country. It was a place of kindness, generosity, lawfulness, and happiness. Darkellyun, though, is not that place.
It could have been, maybe, had the former King still ruled. He’d been far from perfect; not very politically minded, to be honest, but he’d had a big heart and truly loved his country. He tried to do his best for the people that he ruled, and that, in the end, was the cause of his downfall. Several weeks prior to the fall, he passed a law that caused the nobility of Darkellyun to start being taxed alongside the commoners; he was just trying to make the world a fair place. He lacked the skill of intrigue, though, and when a faction of the nobility rose up against him in revolt because of the new law, he had no forewarning.
Their wrath crashed down on him and his family in the middle of the night, assassins sent to kill them under the cover of darkness, sent to slaughter any supporters he had. His queen had been found in her bedchambers, the bed soaked with blood, her lifeless body laying there; the King outside of her door with a sword in his hand, dead despite his attempts to save her.
