Chapter 14 - A Taste of Freedom

Contract to Their Hearts

Lay and Kris left the SM building with a smile on their face at 10am the next day. They had succeeded in getting a whole week of paid time off from work and their wages had come through.

Kris dragged Lay through the streets to their favourite coffee shop and they each bought an iced mocha.

“These are just daebak.” Lay said happily, as they walked through the streets without a care in the world. They wandered through shopping malls and street markets for hours, trying on clothes even if they couldn’t afford them and having a fun time messing around. Lay found a unicorn statuette on a stall and couldn’t help but buy it. “It’ll look good in the dorm.” He said cheerfully.  Kris just rolled his eyes playfully but continued smiling. Lay would never stop liking those bloody unicorns would he?

They both stopped outside a jewellery store and gazed through the glass. Both of them suddenly spoke at the same time. “That one is nice.” They said, pointing at the same ring. They laughed and carried on walking around the streets until their stomachs growled hungrily.

“Ddeokbokki time!” Kris said buying them both food from a nearby stall.

“Ah! It’s hot.” Lay pouted and Kris couldn’t help but laugh at his expression.  They found a bench to sit on as they ate their food and watched the people walking by. Even after all of the weeks that had passed, Kris still found himself double taking every time he saw somebody with black hair. Tao had really imprinted himself on Kris’s brain.

Kris finished his food before Lay and then had a thought. “Stay here, I’ll be back in a minute.” Kris said before jumping up and walking swiftly off. Lay looked after him confused but decided to wait. He waited some more. Five, ten, fifteen minutes passed before Kris returned.

“Where have you been?” Lay asked suspiciously. “I started to think that you weren’t coming back.”

“Of course I’d come back for you.” Kris said, pulling Lay up from the bench by his wrists. “Come on!”

“What?” Lay asked, being pulled along by Kris. “Kris where are we going?”

“You’ll see.” He replied.

A few moments later they were stood outside of an ice skating rink and Kris gave in the entry tickets that he must just have bought.  They swapped their shoes for skates and put their belongings in lockers before they went up onto the ice.

“Have you been ice skating before?” Kris asked.

“Nope.” Lay said nervously, testing his feet on the ice.

“Well that makes two of us!” Kris joked, suddenly slipping but regaining balance before he could fall.

They slowly made their way around the ice rink, slipping and laughing as they went. After a while they became more used to the ice and started to build up a faster pace.  Lay moved his feet one after the other and used his natural balance as a dancer so as not to fall. He moved faster and faster, but then noticed the edge of the rink coming closer and closer. How do you slow down on ice? How do you turn? He had no idea what to do so put his arms out to reduce the impact, he closed his eyes and a moment later felt himself coming to an abrupt stop.

However he was pressed against something warm. Something warm that could breath. He opened his eyes and found Kris’s arms around him, stopping him from crashing and warming up his cold skin.

“Thanks.” Lay murmured, blushing.

“No problem.” Kris said, slowly releasing Lay so that they were now standing facing each other.  Theirs eyes met and Kris thought his heart had stopped right then.  Kris tried to gather up the confidence and energy to speak in that moment, but when he finally opened his mouth to speak Lay beat him to it.

“Um…”Lay cleared his throat and broke eye contact, looking down. “Kris… I was just wondering um…” He looked back up into Kris’s eyes and said. “Maybe you’d like to be my boyfriend?”

Kris’s heart definitely stopped this time. His mouth fell open for a second before remembering he needed to speak. “Yes.” He whispered out, then he too cleared his throat. “Yes, I would.” Kris replied.

He suddenly reached into his pocket and pulled out two rings. They were the same as the ring that both had admired through the shop window.

Kris reached for Lay’s hand with the hand that wasn’t holding the rings and put one on Lay’s finger before putting the other on his own.

Lay admired his hand for a moment before turning to Kris. “Thank you! For the ring and for saying yes.” He quickly left a light kiss on Kris’s cheek before skating off at a quick speed. Kris was left stunned for a moment before he smiled widely and started to race after Lay.

“Are you running away from me?” He called out, trying to catch up with Lay. However having giraffe legs is not a desired quality for an ice skater and he found himself slipping and sliding all about the place while trying to catch Lay.  A small child wondered into his path and he turned to the side, trying to avoid him and ended up tripping over the front of his own skate, falling straight down onto the ice.

He could hear Lay’s laughs from nearby and looked up. Lay was skating slowly over to him and he helped Kris up before starting to skate off again.

“Hey not so quick!” Kris called out, reaching for Lay’s arm and successfully finding purchase. He spun Lay around and the two of them collided, falling down again. Kris landed on his back and Lay landed on top of Kris’s chest, their faces just inches apart.

“Oh hello.” Lay chuckled, moving some of Kris’s fringe from his eyes. He started to get up but Kris pulled him down. Kris was evidently out of breath from skating.

“No stay here. It’s warmer this way!”

Lay started to protest, though his smile remained. “But it’s dangerous, we’re getting in people’s _” Kris silenced him with a forceful kiss to Lay’s lips. He carried on until Lay was breathless before letting Lay get up.

“Fine, fine.” Kris said “Let’s go.”

Lay just followed along blushing. They had just shared their first kiss in public. Their first kiss as a couple, and it was in public!

After taking off their skates, collecting their belongings and wondering about for a while they found a Chinese restaurant and ate the food that they had missed so much before going out once again for a walk. They sat in a remote spot by Han River and watched as the sun set in the distance.

As the night’s chilling air started to creep its way over to the boys they slowly moved closer. Kris saw that Lay was shivering and put his arm around his shoulders.

The stars came into view as the night got darker and they looked out for shooting stars.

“What would you wish for if you saw a shooting star?” Lay asked Kris.

“Freedom.” He replied without missing a beat.

“I wish for… eternal happiness. Happiness for the two of us.”  Lay said smiling.

“Do wishes stretch that far? Do you think there’s a limit to what you can wish for with just one star?” Kris asked curiously.

“Well then I’ll wish for it on two shooting stars to make sure.” Lay replied.

They fell back into a content silence and watched the stars once again.

“There was one!” They both said together.

“Make your wish.” Kris said to Lay.

“But you saw it too.” Lay pointed out.

“But you need to see two stars remember.” Kris joked, bumping his shoulder on Lay’s. Lay closed his eyes and wished for their happiness before slowly opening them again. He leant his head forwards and rested it on Kris’s chest, listening to the beating of his heart as he watched the sky for the other shooting star that would complete his wish.

They stayed like that on the bench for half an hour longer until they were too cold and needed to go home.

“I didn’t get to see another star.” Lay pouted.

“It’s fine. Maybe next time…” Kris said, putting his arm around Lay’s shoulders to cheer him up. He dropped his arm after a moment and instead linked his fingers between Lay’s.

As they walked slowly back towards SM Kris observed Lay’s face. He noted how the colour seemed to have returned, that Lay held his waist a lot less and he’d even gained a little more weight, though not a lot. It was still progress in Kris’s eyes.

Throughout the whole walk Kris couldn’t seem to keep his eyes off of Lay’s face for any longer than a minute at a time. He looked up to see SM just a little way away and then looked back to Lay. Did they really have to go back so soon?

They took another step closer to SM. Then another. Then another. Kris couldn’t stop himself any longer and he turned Lay using the hand he was still holding. He spun Lay fully around until his back was against the wall next to SM before leaning forward and pressing their lips together. The kiss was desperate from the start, lips pressing together with heat and passion never before experienced. Then somehow the kiss became even more desperate and tongues sought each other out. Mouths opened, breathing was impossible and small moans started to fill the night air.

Their bodies were pressed together tightly and it would have continued to escalate if the back door to SM hadn’t been opened just a few feet away and Kai stepped out of the back door.  Kris leaned to the side to try and hide their faces from view, not wanting any one in SM to know about their newly founded relationship. Didn’t their contract say something about no relationships?

A few moments later the door closed and Kris relaxed against the wall, finally moving away from Lay. They caught their breath and walked back into SM through the front door.  Kai caught Kris’s gaze as they entered the elevator and winked at him smugly.  The doors closed on them and Kris was left alone again with Lay.

Well, I think we were caught, Kris thought.  It was then that Kris remembered Kai kissing a host the night he barged in on Lay and Tao.

“He caught us didn’t he?” Lay asked, spotting Kai too.

“Yeah but he won’t tell on us unless he wants me to reveal him kissing Mr. Owl-eyes to SM.”  Kris said chuckling. Lay looked surprised at this, but relieved.

They stepped into their dorm and the TV.

“Seems like the drama I want to watch isn’t on until later.” Lay said, flicking through the TV guide.

Kris sighed and leaned backwards into the sofa.

“I think I’m going to shower.” They both said at the same time.

“We need to stop doing that.” Lay said, blushing.

“On the contrary.” Kris said, examining their matching rings with a smirk on his face. “I think it rather helps me to reach decisions.” With that he pulled Lay up from the sofa into his embrace and to his waiting lips. And it was like that that the two of them made their way to the bathroom, kicking the door shut behind them and stripping from their clothes before having a hot, steamy shower.

Holy cow, I suffered so much through this story because it ended up being a battle between my favorite otps taoris/kray, but in the end I was happy that none of them happened and Lay could be happy again with Joonmama >♡< (and I thought it was for the best that Kris didn't end up with Tao nor with Yixing... Yixing would suffer the most
