Rare encounter (TaengSic)

Bag of Candies

A huff escaped the young adult’s lips as she stared up at the gray sky above her head. Her lips formed a frown and she let her eyes wander down the road. She shifted anxiously in her stance, her eyebrows furrowed and she hugged the jacket tighter around her body.

It better not start raining.

Just as the thought had crossed her mind she felt a small water drop on her nose. Her head titled back, her eyes gazing up at the sky that had let down its tears. Her shoulders slumped and her eyes closed as all kinds of curses went through her mind.

“Where is the damn bus?!”

Just as the words had left she heard the sound of an engine and wheels. Her head turned hopefully the way the bus was supposed to come from, a sigh of relief escaped her lips as she saw the vehicle.

Thank God! She thought and didn’t wait another second to step on the bus after it had stopped. Her hair had already managed to get wet after her few seconds outside. She tried to tame her locks before they tangled as she went through the crammed bus in hope of finding a seat.

Her eyes caught the sight of a vacant seat in the back. She quickly made her way there only to stop in her tracks when she noticed a backpack occupying it. Her shoulders slumped once again and her eyes left the item and looked at its owner who was sitting on the seat beside it.

A brunette female, looking to be around the same age as her, sat there. Her head leaning against the window, eyes closed and ear buds inside her ears.

She felt a bit bad about waking up the serene looking girl but she knew she had too if she wanted this seat. Her shoulders slumped in defeat and she reached her hand out, carefully poking the girl’s shoulder.

No reaction came and she feared this female was just as a heavy sleeper as she was. She bit her lower lip and glanced around the bus one more time. Still not spotting any empty seats she turned back to the girl, poking her shoulder again, a little bit harder this time.

The girl raised her head up and turned towards her. When her eyes landed on her they widened a bit and one of her hands removed one of the ear buds from her ear. She could only smile in relief now when the girl was awake.

“Um…is it okay if I sit here?” She asked and pointed at the seat where the girl’s backpack was.

“Ah, sure, sure. Sorry.” The girl quickly removed her backpack and placed it on her lap. She only smiled politely at her and took the now empty seat next to her. A sigh escaped her lips and she leaned her head against the headrest. Her eyes went to the girl next to her, both ear buds were in her ears now, and her eyes were focused outside the window. A small smile tugged at her lips by the sight and her eyes went forward again, focusing on the back of the seat in front of her.

---

The bus drove over a bump in the road, a little two fast which made some of the passengers tense in their seats to not awkwardly bump into the stranger next to them. The brunette female felt her shoulder bump against the bus’s window, her arms tightened around her backpack to not let it fall down from her lap.

A weight landing on her other shoulder made her head snap towards the direction, only to have her eyes land on a mass of brown hair. She blinked as realized the female who had taken the seat next to her had fallen asleep, and had ended up with her head leaning against her shoulder.

Her eyes blinked a bit surprised and she leaned a bit forward to take a better look at the girl’s face. Eyes closed, and her face relaxed and serene. She didn’t have the heart to wake her up. Not when she seemed to be sleeping so peacefully even though the bus ride was kind of bumpy.

A small smile appeared on her lips as she recalled when the girl had woken her up and she had gotten really startled. For a second she had believed she had talked in her sleep, but that hadn’t been the case. She laughed lightly, but stopped instantly when she felt the girl shift beside her. The head on her shoulder just nuzzled closer, the girl’s arm was pressing against hers and she could get a clear waft of the girl’s shampoo. It smelled like fruits. It was fresh, and very nice.

She must have taken a shower before she went out. She thought.

She smiled. Her head carefully leaned her against the other girl’s, hoping the girl wouldn’t mind that she used her head as a pillow for the rest of the ride. Her smile remained on her lips, and she slowly let her eyes drift close, feeling sleep slowly come back to her again.

---

The bus drove over another bump, making one of the sleeping female’s stir in her sleep. Her eyes slowly opened, her mind slowly processing where she was and in what position she was in. When it finally did her eyes widened and she distanced herself from the female who’s shoulder she had been leaning against.

She noticed the other girl had also been sleeping, and her sudden movements had caused for the girl to also wake up. A little displeased expression was on the girl’s face when she now opened her eyes, being awoken by her for the second time now.

She could only look apologetically at her.

“I’m sorry.” Jessica whispered to the girl who rubbed the sleep away from her eyes. A yawn was her answer and it gave her some time to tend to her appearance as well.

For how long had she been sleeping? Where was she? On the bus, yes, but exactly where?!

“Good morning.” A groggy voice interrupted her frantic thoughts and made her turn towards the occupant of the seat next to hers. She blinked at the tired smile that was beamed her way.

“Slept well?” The girl asked and leaned her head against the headrest as she gazed at her. Jessica felt a blush creep to her cheeks by the question. She embarrassed turned away but nodded her head in answer.

A tired laugh made her glance at the girl in the seat next to her. The smile on the girl’s lips made her fully turn towards her, a bit captivated, and she stared, a bit too long she realized when she noticed the girl was looking at her too, only smiling when she turned away embarrassed after being caught.

Her eyes wandered around the bus. Most people had gone off and they were the few ones left. She tried to locate herself by looking outside the windows, realizing she had to get off on the next stop she frantically looked for the stop button, finding it she reached out towards it, but instead of feeling the cold plastic of the button under her fingers, she felt she was pushing against something warm, bony and skin like.

She realized her fingers were pushing down a pair of other fingers and she quickly pulled away her hand. Her eyes went to the girl next to her, only getting an assuring smile in return, even though she had woken up the girl two times now, used her shoulder as a pillow, and pushed her fingers, in the span of less than an hour.

Jessica sighed and titled her head to the side. How many awkward situations could you get into with one person in one day?

---

It was raining when she stepped off the bus. A frown appeared on her lips and she ped her backpack, taking out the umbrella she had taken with her, in case it would start to rain. She opened it, put it above her head to protect her from the rain and smiled at the sound of pitter-patting against the fabric.

Taeyeon turned around, her smile fading at the blonde who had her jacket above her head, trying her best to protect her hair from the rain. She noticed the girl was heading the same way she was and she walked up towards her, putting the umbrella over her head and continued to walk with her until the girl noticed her.

A pair of brown orbs met her, slightly wide in surprise and she smiled when the girl lowered her jacket from her head.

“I thought that after the bus ride maybe we could stick together a while longer.” Taeyeon jokingly said. A blush appeared on the other girl’s cheeks. A warm feeling of happiness filled her by the sight and smiled at the girl who had embarrassedly turned away from her.

“Are you heading this way?” The girl asked and pointed the way she had been walking.

Taeyeon chuckled at the coincidence.

“For a fact, I am.” She said. The girl blinked surprised and looked the way she was supposed to head before she turned back to Taeyeon.

“So,” Taeyeon looked the way they were supposed to walk before she glanced back at the girl. “do you wanna walk under my umbrella?”

The smile on the girl’s lips made her also break out into a wide smile, the girl began to giggle and she couldn’t help but join in the joyous sound. Once they had calmed down they turned towards each other, with smiles on their faces.

“Sure, when you’re offering it like that, how can I say no?” The girl said. Taeyeon only smiled in return and when she turned she continued to have her eyes on the other girl even as they walked.

“I’m Taeyeon, by the way.” Taeyeon introduced herself after a few seconds of silence. The girl smiled and turned towards her.

“I’m Jessica.”

Taeyeon felt she smiled so wide her teeth were showing, Jessica too smiled at her, a small blush appearing on her cheeks and she turned her head forward, her eyes focused on the street and Taeyeon followed Jessica to where she was heading.

---

“Hey Jessica!” Her feet halted in their tracks and she spun around towards the brunette who was jogging towards her. She looked questioning at the female she had remembered seeing asleep in bed when she had left for work two minutes ago.

“You…forgot…this.” Taeyeon panted when she stopped in front of her. Jessica looked down at the item being held in front of her, a smile appeared on her lips when she saw the umbrella Taeyeon was holding towards her.

“Thank you.” Jessica took the umbrella from the girl’s hand. Taeyeon smiled at her and she couldn’t help but grin. Her hand reached out towards the collar of the sweater Taeyeon was wearing and pulled the girl closer towards her, crashing her lips against hers.

Taeyeon was tense at first, but the longer she kissed the girl the more Taeyeon relaxed and soon Jessica felt a pair of familiar arms circle around her waist. She smiled against the lips and she had to pull away from the kiss before it got too deep, and she got too immersed in it and forgot to catch the bus.

“I have to go.” Jessica said, her hand on Taeyeon’s shoulder to keep the girl from leaning in and capturing her lips again. Taeyeon nodded her head understanding and loosened her arms around Jessica’s form.

“Okay, go. Don’t sleep on stranger’s shoulders.” Taeyeon said with a grin. Jessica smiled and stole a peck from the girl’s lips before she began walking towards the bus stop.

“Don’t worry. I only sleep on your shoulders.” Jessica assured. Taeyeon continued to grin and waved at her. A smile graced Jessica’s lips and she turned around, her eyes landed on Taeyeon’s umbrella she had in her hand.

Ever since the day she had accidentally fallen sleep beside Taeyeon on the bus and used her shoulder as a pillow Jessica hadn’t slept on the bus. Mostly because she felt she didn’t need to find any more Taeyeons in her life than the one she had now.

And she also felt that Taeyeon had been a really rare encounter, and she wouldn’t be as fortunate as she had been that day when she had ended up sitting beside Taeyeon on the bus, being allowed to sleep on her shoulder, and walk under her umbrella.

And after that, getting even more than just a shoulder to lean on, and an umbrella to walk under.
