Scene 12

$1,000,000 USD Love!

Kai sprinted to Moonji’s room, his thoughts racing alongside his pounding footsteps. Concern was etched across his face as he approached her bed. The soft, dim glow of Moonji’s room cast long shadows. Kai's gaze was laced with guilt as he approached her.

“Moonji, did you get into an accident?” Kai’s voice was laced with both worry and confusion as he moved closer to the bed, his brows furrowing. Moonji, her face still partially obscured by the thick blanket cocooning her, responded with a mix of defiance and vulnerability. “Why do you care?"

Kai’s heart ached as he watched her cling to the blanket, her body language guarded. He couldn’t help but feel the complexity of their relationship at this moment. Her words stung, but he knew they were laced with her hurt.

"Could you go away? I don’t want to look at you,” she mumbled, her voice muffled by the fabric.

Kai, struggling to balance his frustration and concern, made a swift decision. He reached out and pulled the blanket away from her, revealing the sight that had
triggered his alarm. Moonji’s left ankle was tightly bandaged, the skin around it displaying vivid shades of red and blue, swollen from the injury. Another sigh of guilt spaced his lips.

"What happened to you?” Kai’s voice softened as he tried to touch her injured ankle, concern carved on his features. However, Moonji’s sharp intake of breath and her
immediate reaction made him recoil.

“Ouch! Don’t touch!” she pushed him away, her eyes still filled with traces of resentment.

“Why didn’t you tell me that you’re hurt?” Kai’s voice was sincere, his gaze focused on her seriously injured leg. The tension between them had begun to dissolve as he realized the gravity of her pain.

"Because you were so busy not caring about me and hating me,” Moonji pushed him away once more, her words laced with lingering hurt.  He was about to say something, but Moonji asked him another question.“Why did you leave me?”

“I... just wanted to make you wait for me as long as I waited for you. I am definitely about to go back to pick you up, but...,” Kai muttered in guilt as he looked at Moonji’s injured leg.

“I’ve waited for you more than an hour at your car...” Moonji sighed as she knew this banter would never end. It will always be her fault at the end of the conversation. She shut as she had nothing more to say. Whatever words that come out of is meaningless. She is just like an object owned by him. Would anyone listen to the toys that they bought? No, right.

Kai’s apology hung in the air, a bridge they both hesitated to cross. The room remained silent as both of them looked down, avoiding looking at each other in the eyes. He shifted his focus, opting for a more practical question:  “Are you hungry, or have you had dinner yet?” Kai’s demeanour softened as he removed the multitude of hairpins from Moonji’s wig.

“I don’t want to eat,” Moonji replied, her voice regressing to a childlike tone. Shrugging the emotional injury she just had, she needs to get over it and show her cheerful side like she always does.

“Why?” Kai couldn’t help but smile as he continued to remove the countless hairpins on her head.

“I’m heartbroken,” Moonji confessed, a subtle vulnerability seeping through her words.  Kai burst into laughter at her choice of words. “You should say my leg is broken, not heartbroken, you airhead.”

A playful back-and-forth ensued, their banter a temporary respite from the heaviness of the situation. “Oh, my God! Why did you put on a ton of hairpins on this wig?” Kai teased, gently shaking Moonji’s head.

Moonji, her voice playfully indignant, swatted his hand away. “Stop it! Leave my wig alone! What are you doing?” she asked, a glimmer of humour in her eyes. You wanted to sleep with a wig on your head?” She knew that Kai was not someone who was good with his words. Hence, his actions speak louder than his words. His being nice to her, reflected how much he felt guilty about it.

"Wig causes your scalp to be smelly. Hope you know that," Kai laughed, washing his hands with soap. He continued teasing, "The smell sticks to my hand. Can't you smell it?" He playfully sniffed his own hands, relishing in Moonji's reaction.

Moonji, her curiosity piqued, immediately pulled out all the hairpins and removed her wig. In pain, she asked, "Kai, could you help me? I need to go to the toilet to wash my makeup off." She moved her body, but a sudden "Ouch!" escaped her lips as her injured ankle throbbed.

Kai, concerned, rushed to her side. "Hey, just stay in bed and don't move," he urged, his expression filled with worry.

Without warning, Kai opened her dresser and grabbed a bottle of makeup remover and some wipes. Moonji, baffled, questioned his actions, "Kai, what are you doing?" Her voice trembled slightly as she watched Kai crawl onto the bed, inching closer.

A mischievous grin played on Kai's lips as he replied, "What do you think? I'm trying to remove this makeup from your face, you cracked head." His laughter erupted, causing Moonji's awkwardness to surface in a clumsy reaction.

Moonji, embarrassed by Kai's teasing, slapped his head playfully and attempted to choke him with her pillow. Kai surrendered, lifting his hands in defeat, which prompted Moonji to go on the offensive with her pillow. Kai sat properly and started to pour a few drops of makeup remover on a cotton pad and rubbed it evenly on Moonji’s face. She was smiling while her eyes were closed, surrendering her face to the hand of Kim Jongin.

Again, Kai gasped in amazement when he looked at her beautiful face. Her smiling face causes Kai to chuckle. “Why are you smiling?” Kai knocked her forehead.

“Because… my boyfriend Kim Jongin-shi is a very good guy, and he had soft hands. Not to forget, he is rich too.” Moonji replied with her high-pitched voice and started to blink her eyes, playfully. Kai can’t help himself but smile more. He took a few pieces of make-up wipes and started to wipe Moonji’s face gently. “My goodness, how thick is your make-up?” He took a couple more pieces of wet tissue and continued to wipe Moonji’s face while babbling about how thick her makeup was.

As he was lost in the make-up removal activity, Moonji moved backwards, halting Kai’s hand from touching her face. “Emm, Kai? The part that was injured is my ankle, not my hands, but why did you do this?” Moonji abruptly opened her two eyes as realisation hit her. “If you clean this make-up using your own hand it is going to be dirty. And you need to go to the toilet to clean your hands. Isn’t it some kind of trouble? You can’t even move your left leg,” Kai muttered as he moved forward. His finger which was only layered by a piece of cotton, gently stoked the girl's lipstick-stained lips. Slowly, the smile that carved their lips faded as their eyes locked, making the atmosphere rather awkward.

"You're done," Kai pushed her face away as he cleared his throat. Moonji hit his hand in annoyance as the man pushed her face suddenly.

When Kai was done fooling around, he left the room and headed to the kitchen. He selected some side dishes from the freezer and prepared kimchi fried rice. He never tried to cook his entire life, but tonight, it will be his first attempt. With the help of the famous chef on YouTube, he successfully made a dish by himself. Returning to Moonji's room, he carried a tray with their dinner. The aroma of the food wafted through the room as Moonji remained engrossed in her book.

"Wow! Dinner!" she exclaimed when the smell reached her senses. Moonji was momentarily distracted by the delightful scent. Kai placed the tray on her lap and encouraged her to start eating. "Thank you~!It's delicious~!" Moonji beamed in happiness as she munched her dinner. To her amazement, his cooking turned out to be excellent.

"Are you joking?" Kai asked, surprised by her reaction to his cooking. It was his first attempt, after all. Moonji responded by feeding him, intrigued by the disbelief in Kai's expression.

"Moonji-ah, could you feed me some more?" He requested, and they continued sharing the meal. He, too in disbelief at his hidden skill. Curious about Kai's culinary experience, she asked, "Is this your first time cooking?"

Kai nodded and couldn't help but keep his eyes on the food. "Kai, you have a talent for cooking. This is amazing!" she complimented as they exchanged bites.

"Let's takes some picture of your first cooking," Moonji suddenly took out her phone and snapped some pictures of her and Kai with their food. Proud of his own achievement, Kai, too, took out his phone and took a few memorable pictures. He was very proud of himself when Moonji complimented his skill with every bite she took. He took the chance to post the picture on his Instagram with the caption 'My first cooking for her'. Notifications began flooding in, making his phone vibrate incessantly. Luckily, he'd only captured Moonji's arm in the photo, sparing her face.

After finishing their meal, Kai cleaned the dishes and returned to Moonji's room with some water. He sat beside her, opened his phone, and discovered that all the EXO members had liked the picture.

"Kai? Did you post that picture on your Instagram?" Moonji's voice held a note of concern, but Kai quickly reassured her by showing the image, emphasizing that only her arm was visible. Nevertheless, he was subjected to Moonji's teasing and playful hits.

"Why are you always insecure with your looks?" He asked shifting the topic of their conversation deeper. Moonji's face lost it smile when she heard his question. In her mind, she was born ugly. Hence, the reason why she was abandoned at an orphanage when she was four. The childhood memories of being abandoned, scarred her for life as she grew up being mock that her parents left her because she looks ugly.

"Because, I was not born pretty?" She let out a bubbly chuckled to her answer. Masking the hurt she felt with a cheerful intonation. Kai didn't say anything as he heard her words. He could tell there is more than meet the eyes but he didn't want to ask more. He then lay on the bed as he look at the white ceiling.

"Just go to your room if you wanted to rest," Moonji said as she look at Kai. Kai shook his head as he look at Moonji who was laying right beside him. Living as a young heir with both working parents traveling around the world collecting wealth. His day passed rather empty with much interaction when he got home. Hence, having a company in this house, arguing, talking or just simply nodding to his words were very much appreciated.

"I'm glad that I bought you for a million dollar. You're a good company. Sometimes, the house felt very empty when I got home," Kai muttered. The atmosphere shifted as he admitted how much he missed them. Moonji moved closer to Kai, offering comfort. Despite his initial resistance, Kai couldn't help but accept her embrace, finding solace in her understanding.

With a contented smile gracing her lips, Moonji gazed at Kai, her eyes warm and empathetic. She inquired softly, "How were your parents?"

Kai's face softened, his eyes betraying the longing he felt for his family. A subtle sadness lingered in his gaze as he responded, "Mom and Dad were fine."

Moonji, keenly attuned to his emotions, sensed the depth of his yearning for his parents. She didn't need words to convey her support. Instead, she gently moved closer, wrapping her arms around him in a comforting embrace.

Kai, initially attempting to evade her touch, found himself powerless against her warmth and compassion. Despite his resistance, Moonji held him securely, her touch reassuring. "Don't touch me," he murmured, but his voice lacked conviction.

Moonji persisted, determined to offer solace to her dear Kai. She held him tenderly, her voice filled with understanding as she whispered, "My lovely Kai misses his parents. It's okay to miss them. I get you." Her fingers traced soothing patterns through his hair, their shared silence speaking volumes. She could grasped a little insight of his life, he must have used to be alone, hence, he can be very lacking in empathy and awkward with his words.

Kai, his guard gradually lowering, fell silent, the weight of his longing finally acknowledged. In the safety of Moonji's embrace, he allowed himself to express the depth of his feelings, knowing that he didn't have to bear the burden of his emotions alone.

The following Saturday morning, Kai struggled to open his heavy eyelids, his surroundings slowly coming into focus. To his surprise, he found himself in a cosy embrace, sleeping beside Moonji. A sense of comfort and warmth enveloped him.

Moonji began to stir, her eyelids fluttering open. She stretched her body, and Kai pretended to remain asleep, observing her with curiosity. She suddenly joked, "What are you doing! Yah! Yah!" Her eyes remained shut as she spoke. She settled back into their embrace, her arms encircling Kai.

Kai, resisting the urge to laugh, continued to feign slumber as Moonji's gentle snores filled the room. They had slept in each other's arms the entire night, a thought that had initially startled Kai, but he couldn't deny the comfort it brought. It was weird Kai never been so comfortable around girls including Dasom but why did he feel really comfortable with Moonji? He was wondering about himself. Maybe because that we live in the same house for a month and half.

Moonji yawned and finally woke up, sitting upright. As she placed her legs on the floor, she accidentally created a loud noise. Startled, Kai woke up as well. "Auch!" Moonji was sitting on the floor, clutching her left ankle in pain.

"Where do you want to go? Why didn't you wake me up?" Kai questioned, his brows furrowing with concern as he rushed to her side. Moonji was now attempting to stand up.

With an annoyed tone, Moonji responded, "To the toilet, please!" Kai gently lifted her and carried her to the bathroom. He settled her on the toilet seat, standing outside of the toilet to ensure her privacy.

Once Moonji was finished, Kai asked, "Are you okay?" Moonji assured him that she was, and he carried her back to bed. He tucked her in and joined her, closing his eyes once more. But sleep didn't come as easily for Moonji. Restless, she tried to wake Kai by playfully disturbing his sleep. When he finally stirred, she took the opportunity to engage him in some playful teasing.

"What do you want?" Kai asked, annoyed by her antics, but his irritation only made her more mischievous. Kai was pissed off when Moonji played with his ears. “I want you to hug me” She made a tickly voice and joke around. Kai aggressively hugged her tight and locked her with his leg that froze her completely. Her request was a joke, but she didn't dislike it if Kai hugged her for real. As Moonji was about to shout, she heard was already snoring and his eyes were tightly close. Moonji gave up from escaping and fell asleep again. Defeated, she fell asleep in Kai's comforting arms again.

Amidst the morning light filtering through the curtains, Kai's phone suddenly broke the tranquil atmosphere with its persistent ringing. He stirred from his sleep and reached under his pillow to locate the source of the disturbance. Fumbling slightly, he answered the call, his voice still heavy with sleep. "Hello? Who is this Kai is speaking?"

A chorus of voices greeted him on the other end, and the urgency in their tone was impossible to miss. "Kai! Why didn’t I see your face?" Suho's voice sounded. Kai, befuddled, mumbled, "What? My face?"

Suho, impatient, insisted, "Show me your face now."

Kai's eyes darted around the room, searching for a place with better lighting. His gaze landed on the nearby window, the soft morning glow gently illuminating the surroundings. "What! Where are you guys?"

Chanyeol chimed in, chuckling, "This is a video call, you stupid!"

Kai shifted his gaze to his phone's screen, where he was met with the sight of his fellow EXO members waving excitedly. With a resigned smile, he greeted them, "Hi guys. Why did you call?"

Baekhyun, always one to tease, couldn't resist the opportunity. "Don’t you remember? We are going to a fire camp!"

Suddenly, the memory flooded back into Kai's mind. They had indeed made plans to go camping this week. Just as the realization hit him, Moonji stirred beside him, her head finding its place on Kai's chest. In a reflexive gesture of protection, Kai reached out and pulled the blanket up, covering Moonji's head and face.

"Woooohhhhhhhh!!!!!! Who is that? Is that Moonji?" The excited voices of his friends erupted simultaneously, their faces appearing on the screen. "We can’t see her face because you are too fast covering her face!!"

Kai rolled his eyes, letting out an exasperated sigh. "Could you guys just shut up? She is sleeping here." He glanced at Moonji, who lay curled up beside him. "I am sorry; I can’t go camping. Moonji had an accident yesterday, so she needs me to be here."

Baekhyun and Chanyeol exchanged amused glances, clearly unimpressed with Kai's excuse. "What an excuse," Suho chimed in, shaking his head. "Just say that you two want to cuddle in bed all day long, so please don’t give us such a reason. It is okay; we will delay the camp." Suho waved his goodbye, and the video call ended with laughter and well-wishes from his friends.
