Luhan's Secret
The MaskJust how many more promises did Luhan had to break with Jinah? For the past week, he noticed how cold she was acting towards him. He had a feeling that it had something to do with him lying to her when he met Yeon Ah. He didn’t want to lie to her, but that was the only solution he could think of that time.
Jinah: Are you busy today? I want you to accompany me somewhere. I want you to meet someone important.
Luhan: I’m sorry, but I have an appointment. Maybe next time?
Luhan sighed as he sent her the text. He didn’t want to bring her in the cemetery and ask him why he was visiting a grave of someone who wasn’t related to him. The guilt never failed to eat him every single day. It had been ten years since the accident happened.
Luhan was in Korea that time. His parents brought him with them to attend their close friend’s wedding at the province. He was so bored at the wedding ceremony that he borrowed the old man’s car. The old man owned the place where they were staying. He was really nice. He lived alone since his wife died a long time ago due to her old age.
Despite his young age, he already knew how to drive. His father even taught Luhan himself how to drive, however, he wasn’t that good at driving yet. He thought there would be no cars in that part of the province since it was almost deserted. However, he was wrong, because he didn’t realize that another car was approaching since he was on his phone. He took a sharp turn to avoid the other car, and he successfully did, but the other car hit the tree. He didn’t know what happened after that since he passed out from shock. When he woke up in the hospital, he found out that the people inside that car died.
‘I killed two people…’
Luhan came back to his senses when he tripped over a rock that made him almost drop the flowers he was holding. His hands were shaking, although he tried hard not to shake. The place was quiet, and there was no one in the cemetery. He walked more and more until he reached their tombstones.
Ahn Jiseok.
Ahn Nahyun.
He carefully put down the flowers and bowed as a sign of respect. However, he didn’t get up from his knees. He kept his head low, and let the past play in my memory again.
There was no witness. Only his parents and the old man knew about the accident. They begged him to keep it as a secret which he actually did. There was a time where he wanted to tell the police what he knew, but something grave happened before he could even spill it out; he died of a heart attack. It was a relief for Luhan and his family, but it had always bugged their conscience. They had the car sent to the junkyard, and from that, there were no more traces of any evidence. Now, it was only him and his parents who knew about this.
Luhan’s family and him decided not to know anything about the couple, afraid that whatever they would find out might burden them more. They didn’t want to know whether the other people left a family behind or if they were bad people. Running from a crime scene was wrong and never had he imagined that he would be such a coward to face the consequences of his actions. He didn’t want to be sent to a boys’ home and get jailed for life or worse, face death sentence. He didn’t know the possible consequences. Still, he was scared to death.
“I know that asking for forgiveness is not enough. My reckless action had caused your death. I should be facing the consequences of what I did and not running away. I should be punished, yet here I am, living freely. I’m a wicked person, evil, no conscience and whatever you could think of.” I laughed bitterly and continued talking, “Did you leave anyone behind? Should I find out and make it up to that person instead? Or is it people, and not just a single person?” He sighed, losing himself in his own sea of misery.
‘10 years… I’ve been hiding for 10 years…’
“Did you leave a child behind? Or children? If so, I can’t imagine how
