Chapter III

Cold, Heat & Love

Jinri turned her head back and forth in confusion. She was standing in the middle of a green field filled with white and red roses. No wild weeds or signs of unwanted growth. Luscious green trees stood firmly a few steps away from her and the clear lake where the reflection of the sun perfectly shines and the warm heat enveloping her body. It was simply, breathtaking. Jinri smelled a strange scent of what seemed to be like a mixture of burning coal and alcohol. She turned behind her and saw  large buildings  with smoke pipes emitting the grey gas to the dark skies that shrouded the cold area. Jinri stared in fear as she looked at the contradicting scenes unfolded infront of her. She became unbearably confused and broke down on the ground hugging her knees. She heard a few voices, two to be exact, and looked up. She saw Luhan and Krystal walking up to her while talking simultaneously, “You are in a place between dreams and reality. You can neither suffer nor enjoy the scenes infront of you. You shall stay in place, dormant, for the rest of your life.” Jinri tried walking up to them but she couldn’t move. Luhan came to her and stared at her directly in the eye. Red. His eyes were blood red and his skin felt cold and looked pale. He opened his jaw to reveal two sharp fangs. He leaned closer to Jinri’s neck and she froze unable to do anything and made soft whimpers. He opened his jaws wider and she felt his teeth on her pale skin. The next thing she knew...

Jinri jerked up from her bed and beads of sweat rolled down her forehead. She turned her head from left to right and sighed in relief but her thoughts kept replaying the last scene of her dream. Vampire. She thought silently but soon shrugged off her outrageous thoughts. I should put down the myth books. She sighed inwardly to herself and got off from her bed. She looked at the clock on her bedside table and realized that it was still five in the morning. She layed down again to get some more sleep before she had to prepare for school but she couldn’t. She puffed her cheeks still wondering what to do.

After long minutes of thinking, she decided to just read another book. She first reached for the book she didn’t finish two nights ago but retracted her hand and decided to pick one about a more subtle topic, mummys.

Jinri loved to read books about mythological creatures  and strange beings. But, the thing is, she never believed any of them actually excisted. Judging from her collection books, people would take her to be the super-sticious type but in truth, she didn’t give a hoot about any weird happenings outside the books. She often shrugged them off to be mere coinsidences eventhough the signs and proof were as close to the description of the books.

The stranger thing is, these so called real life mysteries always gets solved in the end and a scientific explenation was availible. Jinri dreaded it. She wanted to believe, she wanted to see the world from a different perspective. But she couldn’t, there always has to be an explenation.

All through the reactions to myths and legends throughout her life, there was one mystery yet to be solved. Luhan. She didn’t understand what she was feeling. She only saw the boy once yet she felt a strong connection between them. Was it admiration? Affection? Love? Jinri couldn’t tell, beacuse her mind was filled with assumptions.

Looking away from the book which she was never really reading, she glanced at the clock and saw that it was already six. She decided to just go down to the kitchen and prepare a decent breakfast for her dad and pack lunch for herself.

She washed her face before making quick strides down the steps and into the kitchen. She boiled the hot water in the coffee machine and poured in the coffee mix then left it alone for her dad to take himself. She walked over to the fridge and opened the door only to be utterly dissapointed. Beer, Leftovers, Lasagna gone bad, more beer, milk..She gazed through the foods in her dad’s fridge until she found something she could work with, eggs and leftover ham. She took out some of the milk and began mixing the eggs with it. She sliced up the ham and put them over the frying pan. She took out another frying pan and two of the stoves. She put in the butter and eggs and began to scramble them. She was done in no less than fifteen minutes and placed the eggs and ham on two plates and put them on the dining table.

As if on cue, Yonghan came out of the short hall way and smiled to Jinri. “Good morning” he said in a raspy sleepy voice. “mornin’ dad” She said calmly before taking the pot of coffee and poured it on the cup next to her father and pecked him on the cheek once. She went back to the kitchen and searched for some bread and lettuce. She almost jumped for joy when she found a tub of mayo along with the bread and made herself a sandwhich for school. She wrapped it in cling foil and placed it in a brown paper bag with her usual apple.

She sat herself down on the table and ate breakfast with her dad.

“How’s school?” Yonghan asked while taking a bite of his eggs.

“Fine.” Jinri replied nonchalantly as she sliced her ham

“Meet anyone new?”

“Yeah. I did.”

“Did you meet that boy..uhh..What’s his name?” Yonghan asked in confusion with himself

“Kai?” Jinri asked suggestively

“Right. Kai. He was really excited to see you again.”

“So I’ve heard..I met his and Kris’ friends”

“Oh, well that’s good. Did you meet Kris’ sister?”

“Amber?” Jinri asked and got a nod in response

“Why do you ask?” She said looking up while sipping her coffee

“Nothing, it’s just that she was away when you were here before.”

“I’ve been wondering about that..How come I’ve never seen her before. I’ve been to Kris’ house loads of times.”

“Manner school. Her parents said she needed to learn how to be ‘proper’.” Yonghan replied as-a-matter-of-factly

“Ah. That explains everything. Though I don’t think manner school helped that much.” Jinri said slightly rolling her eyes in amusement

“I know that. Alot of parents came to the school with complaints about their daughters’ sudden “attitude change” when Amber graduated..and it’s not the good kind of change.” Yonghan said trying to stiffle a laugh but failed miserably in a matter of seconds with Jinri following suit.

Looking back at the clock in the living room wall, Jinri decided to get ready for school. She did her usual morning routine and left for the bus stop. She made it just in time when the bus arrived and entered. The bus was empty again like yesterday and she still sat herself in the same seat and admired the view of the town outside while listening to music. The bus stopped in its usual stop and Jinri got off the bus and saw Kai, Kris, Victoria and Amber by the front door chatting with each other mindlessly.

Jinri approached them and said a soft ‘hi’ while waving slightly. They said their respective responses and went back to their conversation. Jinri talked with Kai and Kris about their old memories and how they used to play with each other practically everyday when she visited. Looking at all of this, Amber felt a slight pang of jealousy fluttering in her stomach. She was jealous at the fact that Kai seemed to be much happier with Jinri than he was with her.

It was a known fact to everyone in their little gang except for Jinri and Kai that Amber had a thing for Kai. Eventhough she would never admit it, Kris knows that what Amber feels is something more than just a petty crush. He would sometimes act all weird around Kai and Amber that she would punch him in the stomach or when she’s in a really bad mood, kick his private parts, hard. But Kai is too dense to realize the reason for Kris’ strange behaviour. Though Amber has consistently beat, scratched, slapped and bad mouth Kris, he would never stop bugging those two since he considers it his mission to get those two together.

The bell for first period rung and they all went to their seperate schedules. Apparently, in this school, students switch between two schedules everyday so Jinri didn’t have first period with Kris but had Spanish class with Kai for her second to last period. Her first period today was Chemistry but it was held in a different room. She finally reached the class after a good five minutes of searching. She scanned the classroom before her eyes landed on a certain red-head staring out into the window. She was then approached by the teacher who told her to pair up with Krystal for the rest of the term. Great.

She sat herself down on the chair next to Krystal’s and the red-head turned her head to face Jinri and grinned a little. It made Jinri feel a little weird. She extended her hand towards Jinri and introduced herself.

“Hi. I’m Krystal” she said waiting for Jinri to take her hand

“Hi. Jinri, but I liked to be called Sulli.” Jinri said sounding a little distant and cold. She flinched when she touched Krystal’s hand feeling how cold it was. She looked at Krystal with concern and Krystal just smiled at her smugly. Rude. Jinri thought.

“Is there a problem?” Krystal asked and Jinri shook her head.

“No no..” She trailed off. Jerk. She thought again silently to herself.

The teacher in the front explained to them some equations and formulas and told them to do the following chemicals listed with their respected partners. Jinri opened her book but Krystal had already started to pour a solution into the other.

“Wait! What are you doing?” Jinri asked concerned

“What? I’m just doing the experiments..” She trailed off still measuring the amount.

Jinri stared at the beaker Krystal was working on and was surprised that the mixture reacted correctly.

“You forgot your gloves.” Jinri said waving the elastic material around.

“Don’t need them..cause..I am..done.” Krystal said while carefully pouring the remaining chemicals needed in the mixture.

Jinri looked at the beaker carefully and saw that a drop of the solution spilled on Krystal’s thumb.

“You spilled some.” Jinri said pointing to her own thumb

“Oh..No biggie” Krystal just wiped off the solution with the sleeve of her dress and gave the solution for Jinri to inspect. Instead of looking at the beaker, she stared at Krystal’s thumb and how it didn’t even sore or burn or rash. It was still as snow-white as before and she showed no sign of pain or even a slight flinch or a wince. She stayed perfectly calm and waited patiently for Jinri to finish.

“That was concentrated sodium chloride..doesn’t it hurt?” Jinri asked still looking at Krystal in complete and utter shock.

Krystal looked at her thumb and shrugged indifferently. “It was just NaCl. It doesn’t do much harm.”

“Yeah..But still you were completely unharmed! There should at least be a small bruise or blister..” Sulli said a little loudly then everyone started staring

“Look..are we just going to talk about my thumb or are we going to submit this experiment. Cause I’d love to pass in my overall assesment for the term.” Krystal said sounding a little cold and rude.

“Well so-rry for being concerned.” Jinri said sarcastically while rolling her eyes.

“Well you’re wasting your time..You hardly even know me.” Krystal said turning from Jinri and refaced the board while picking at her nails and staring at them.

Jinri just kept silent after that not wanting to get into a cat fight in her second day of school. She just checked the beaker and submitted it to the teacher. When the bell rung, she didn’t even want to spare Krystal a passing glance and just trugged off to second period.

The rest of the day went by pretty quickly for Jinri and the next thing she knew, it was her final lesson for the day, P.E. She went to the outer fields where all the sports field and equipment were. She went into the girl’s changing room and changed to her sports uniform. A grey shirt and blue short sweat pants. She pulled her hair back to a high pony tail and joined the rest of the class. Today, they were going to have a baton pass relay race and they were partnered up.

The teacher, or more accurately, the coach called out the names until Jinri’s name was called out and she lift her head up to listen.

“Choi Jinri will be paired with Xi Luhan,” The coach blew the whistle to attract attention before continuing. “Now go to your partners and decide who’ll run first.”

Jinri saw Luhan (who she didn’t realize was in PE with her) walking over to her and she felt her heart rate increase in a rate which she thought wasn’t even normal. Jinri couldn’t help but stare at Luhan’s features and admired them deeply. She was cut off from her thoughts when she heard a loud “Duck!” screamed at her and before she could turn her head around, she saw Luhan stand right next to her holding his hand up. Jinri looked up to Luhan’s hand and saw that he was holding a baton, the one that could’ve hit her in the head. Luhan tossed the baton back at the person who threw it and turned to Jinri. He put on a soft smile and reached out his hand towards Jinri.

“Hi..I’m Luhan. You must be Jinri.” Luhan said shaking her hand after she hesitantly grabbed his

Jinri winced once again. Ice cold. “Sulli. I liked to be called Sulli.”

“You must know my sister Krystal. She has first period with you.” Luhan continued after letting go of Jinri’s hand

“Ah right. You’re her brother.” Jinri said sounding a bit colder than she intended

“Please forgive me for my sister’s repulsive behaviour. She’s actually nice once you get to know her.” Luhan giggled then smiled sheepishly.

“I guess..” Jinri said but was cut off when the coach blew on his whistle and screamed, “Take your positions.”

“You go run first then I’ll run last.” Luhan said and Sulli looked at him a bit concerned “Trust me.” He continued and something about the way he said it made Jinri’s stomach do uncontrollable flips.

The two of them took their positions and Jinri ran as fast as she could when the whistle was blown. Jinri thought herself to be a pretty fast runner but was proven wrong when she passed the baton to Luhan and he ran at almost in an inhumane speed. It was still quite possible for the human body to do that but not any average human. They usually need to train hard and long to achieve that speed but judging from Luhan’s slightly skinny structure, Jinri doubted he trained that hard. That made her curiosity arouse and she just couldn’t help but gape.

She gasped slightly when Luhan’s cold hand touched her chin and pried her open jaws closed and giggled. “Don’t want to catch flies do you?” Luhan said while handing her the baton. She stared at the fact that Luhan didn’t even look breathless and he wasn’t even sweating. Jinri found it hard to speak but luckily she didn’t have to cause the coach congratulated them and got a guaranteed pass for their sports examinations.

Luhan turned to look at Jinri and smiled. “Well that was fun. You run fast.”

“It was nothing compared to you..” Jinri said blushing slightly from the compliment. Jinri focused on a particular area on Luhan’s face. Yellow. Luhan’s eyes were yellow and they were glowing.

“A-are you wearing lenses?” Jinri asked while gesturing to her own eyes in circles.

Luhan quickly shut his eyes with his hands. “Uh..yeah..i gotta go.” He said before walking away to the boy’s locker room.

Weird. Jinri thought.

The bell then rung and Jinri went back to the locker rooms to change. She was in the middle of packing her clothes when she was suddenly thrown harshly against the lockers and was held up by the collar of her shirt. She saw three girls infront of her. One had wavy light brown hair with a sharp jawline and slightly chizzeled nose. The other two had the same hair color of brown but had strips of colored extensions. One of them had round cheeks and the other one looked like she could kill anything at the moment.

The one holding her to the lockers glared at her before speaking. “Listen hear you brat..I don’t give a damn who you are but if you ever lay a hand on my Luhan again. I will end your life.” Jinri just ducked her head trying to kick the girl away when she suddenly heard a clang. Like, something banged to the lockers. The girl and Jinri turned back and saw the other two laying seemingly lifeless against the lockers. They heard something like a crack and turned their heads to the right and saw Krystal cracking her knuckles and sending the girl a warning glare.

“I’ll give you three seconds to back off.” Krystal said firmly

“Tch. Or what?” The girl scoffed

It all happened to fast. Krystal grabbed the girl by one of her arms and flipped her through the air until she landed on the ground and scowled in pain.

“That. Or maybe I should lift you from here.” Krystal said grabbing the girl’s thick locks and tugging on it harshly.

“NO! NO! NO! Okay..okay..I’ll back off.” The girl said almost tearing up and squeaked in pain.

“Then again..handling your sorry excuse of friends there ruined my nail polish..” Krystal said smirking then harshly jabbed on the girl’s gut with two fingers and getting off of her. Then as if to add insult to injury – as Krystal intended – she said with a scoff, “And just so you know..my brother isn’t interested in pricks like you.”

Krystal turned to Jinri who just stood there mortified. “Are you okay?” Krystal asked fixing up her ruined collar. She just nodded in response not trusting herself to speak. “C’mon. Lets go.” Krystal continued and took Jinri’s bag handing it to her. They were about to exit when Krystal coughed lightly to get her attention. “uhh..You’re welcome?” she said raising an eyebrow and crossing her arms. Jinri smiled softly and muttered a soft thank you. With a pleased smile, Krystal walked behind Jinri and caught up to her.

“Who were they?” Jinri finally asked

“Luna, Sooyoung and Hyoyeon. The school’s most popular girls. I just call them plastic and bratty.” Krystal said slightly giggling

“What do they want with me?” Jinri asked

“They’re just jealous..you got closer to my brother in a period than they did in three years.” Krystal smiled

Jinri nodded in understandment and saw Luhan waiting by his locker probably for Krystal.

“I should go..I’ll see you later Sulli.” Krystal said walking towards Luhan. Luhan gave Sulli a knowing smile and linked arms with Krystal and walked off. Jinri blushed a bit and walked to the parking lot where her dad was already waiting for her. They didn’t talk much in the car since Jinri was too tired after today’s events.

She prepared herself to sleep that night tossing and turning thinking about the two mysterious siblings that are Krystal and Luhan.
