Chapter IX

Cold, Heat & Love

When Jinri first saw the forest that borders Valle Del Sol, she wouldn't even for a second have thought that behind the tall trees, resides a mansion inhabited by creatures that look like humans but are so much more than our species that seems so insignificant compared to their amazing abilities and capabilities.

She stepped out of Krystal's car in complete awe as she kept her eyes focused on the huge main entrance that was made of white double doors that were seemed to be made of carved wood and the parallel panel windows that stuck proudly as if guarding the door. She almost tripped when she didn't notice the black marbled steps that led to the doorway and stumbled the first step. Krystal opened the door and a click was heard. What greeted her the moment she came in was a guy that she'd never seen before swinging from the wall frame and smiling in front of her.

The man, or maybe boy, had sharp features with a perfectly chiseled nose and a mop of dark blonde hair covered his forehead. His eyes were pursed into a thin line caused by his wide smile and flaring cheeks. And he, like the house itself was wearing white.

"Hi! I'm Daehyun. You must be Sulli, Luhan's told me all about you." He greeted cheerfully. Jinri's cheeks flushed a slight shade of pink when she heard about what Luhan had been doing.

"H-he has?" She stuttered questioningly

"Sull, this is our brother Daehyun who was also taken under custody of my parents." Krystal said before the former could say anything more to Jinri. She didn't even get a chance to breathe before she heard an overly cheerful voice from behind her.

"Hi there!" A squeaky little voice greeted. Jinri jumped with shock written all over her face and turned  around. She saw a girl who was much shorter than she was and had a short mess of blonde hair cut into a bob hairdo.

"And this is-" Krystal tried to explain before she got cut off.

"I'm Sunny." The girl said extending her hand. Jinri took it carefully only to have her hand shaken vigorously by Sunny. It hurt a little but she didn't want to show it.

"Wow you're really pretty. No wonder Luhan likes you." Sunny exclaimed unthinkingly causing Jinri to blush harder at the embarrassment she was facing right now. Sunny received a smack up the head from Krystal giving the latter a glare and a roll of eyes in response.

"Well c'mon. Meet the rest of the gang." Krystal trailed off as she walked past the three of them and through the foyer. Daehyun zoomed past Krystal - as in, literally, zoomed past her and Sunny followed suit. Krystal remained calm even after those two rushed past her and completely messed up her hair. She stopped in her steps once she realized that Jinri was just standing there not moving an inch.

"Are you coming or what?" She asked raising an eyebrow amusedly.

"R-right.." Jinri trailed coming back from her shock induced trance.

She follwed behind Krystal through the breathtaking hall that had a line of fine looking vases following the area. The clean marble under her feat slightly glowed under the sunlight that gazed on the inside through large pane windows that only left a little amount of space between them. Through the not-so-short entrance was what Jinri figured out, to be the guest room. Daehyun and Sunny had already made themselves comfortable.

"The others are.. Erhm.. Getting food.." Sunny said slowly looking at Jinri who began to take a seat on a black chair next to the couch. 'Hunting..' She thought. She expected Luhan and maybe others to come to the house with their clothes smothered in blood and dirt. Their eyes showing complete satisfaction and if she had to admit it, she was a little scared. She was actually surprised that none of them killed her yet. She was just a defenseless human amidst a house which was probably filled with vampires.

Her expectations, however, were completely shattered when a 'ding' resonated through the house and what seemed like the smell of pastries filled the room. She looked curiously towards the source and saw the kitchen that was led up through a small flight of wooden stairs and a black one-sided handrail supporting it. She hadn't noticed it before and in a few seconds, three people came down the steps in which one of them was Luhan. He was holding a tray and above it was a pot and.. Tea cups? Jinri was absolutely confused. Luhan was looking at her smiling but she didn't have time to look when a girl came down holding a covered plate and a last boy that was wiping his hands with a napkin. She was bewildered but her thoughts were interrupted by a roaring laughter from the guy who was cleaning his hands. Everyone looked at him immediately sending him questioning stares and amused expressions.

"Sh.. She thought we were..going..hunting..!" Said boy said between laughs and the entire room erupted into giggle fits and Jinri felt embarrassed because she knew that their laughs and giggles were directed at her. Everyone found it funny except for Luhan who looked extremely pissed. He placed the tray he was holding on a nearby table and went up to the laughing boy pulling his ear and his laughs were interrupted by pained noises.

"Ow, ow, ow, ear, ear!" He said as Luhan dragged him over to Jinri who was still in a state of utter confusion.

"Apologize" Luhan said in a serious yet flat tone causing Jinri's face to flush and her heart fluttering in wheezes because she couldn't help but admit to herself how sweet this situation is. The boy gave Luhan a death glare before turning to Jinri.

"I'm sorry I insulted you in front of everyone. There happy." He directed his last sentence towards Luhan who shrugged and replied. "Don't ask me. Ask her." The boy groaned and turned back to Jinri giving her a hopeful look. 'That must've been the most insincere apology I've ever heard in my life.' She thought to herself but all that came out was, "It's fine. But how did y-" Jinri was cut off in her question when Krystal interrupted.

"And, this is Himchan. He, can read minds." Krystal said before continuing, "And that, is Naeun. Our youngest sister." Naeun put down the cake tray and smiled at Jinri while waving softly.

"Nice meeting you." She said and Jinri smiled back. Everyone else took their seats around the living room and Jinri couldn't help but continue to ponder about the fact that everyone was sipping tea and she completely forgot about the cup in her own hands. Himchan, who had placed his cup back to the table looked at Jinri pointedly and said, "We eat human food too you know.."

"I'm sorry I just-" Jinri was interrupted when Himchan spoke up again.

"You thought we only drink blood since that's what you read in your books." He stated and Jinri nodded.

"Damn humans. Stereotyping vampires as blood ers. Curse you dracula.." Daehyun said to no one in particular and a few of them scoffed excluding Luhan who kept on looking at Jinri interestedly.

"So that's how our little detective figured us out huh?" Luhan suddenly said amusedly looking at Jinri who didn't give any response and instead busied herself by taking a slice of the cake they made which she deemed as heavenly.

"What else did those books say?" Sunny questioned excitingly

"Well.. The book was actually about vampires and werewolves and-" She was again interrupted and to be completely honest, she felt slightly annoyed. "I can't believe it! They put us in the same books with those dogs.." Himchan said out loud and Daehyun scoffed before saying, "Tch, typical.."

"Will everybody just stop interrupting her!" Krystal suddenly piped out. "God, it's even making me annoyed.." She trailed off.

"Continue" Luhan told Jinri smiling slightly as a small form of encouragement for her to continue.

"The book says that vampires feel numb on the inside and that they don't ever grow. It says that you don't feed on human food and werewolves are considered as natural enemies." Jinri said in one breath.

"Well you got the last part right." Himchan said crossing his arms and looking straight at Jinri.

"But the rest is just..so..misleading.." Sunny continued

"It's more of a science really." Naeun, who, for the first time in this entire event finally spoke up.

"What do you mean?" Jinri asked interestedly now gaze completely focused on Naeun.

"Well, it's not that were completely numb on the inside. It's more well considered as regeneration." She stated before continuing. "You see, when we first get bitten and the venom spreads, our organs are somewhat, reconstructed. So, in a way, they completely break apart before reforming, thus, the pain we have to go through." Everyone slightly shuddered at the words as they remember vividly the torture they went through.

"And.. Then what happens?" Jinri inquired completely absorbed into the topic.

"Afterwards, they continuously grow and their cells regenerate at a rate in which, in a human's case, could cause cancer or other unwanted tumours. But what happens to us is, it creates a barrier inside our bodies until it hardens and shields them from growing any further also stopping blood flow in the process. Technically speaking, our organs still work but not as well or functioning as humans." Naeun explained like a complete proffessional.

"Smart " Himchan mockingly coughed up. As soon as he said that, his eyes shut and he grabbed his head in pain. "I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" After he screamed that out, he sighed in relief and fell to the floor with a groan.

"I love seeing that.." Sunny chuckled

"And I love doing that" Naeun said smiling and drinking her tea.

"Naeun here has the ability to manipulate the sensations that our bodies feel. And it.. Is really scary." Krystal explained to Jinri who was completely lost at the whole debacle.

"I prefer the term biologist dear Himchan." Naeun said looking at the former who was slowly recovering from the pain and taking his place back in his seat.

"Alright I get it, 'doctor'" he spat mockingly

"Should I do it again? Maybe in a place more.. 'private'?" She asked raising an eyebrow challengingly.

Himchan sub-consciously placed his hands in front of his private parts and shuddered. "No thanks. Sorry." He said hanging his head low.

A few more stories and facts were exchanged before Jinri was left alone with Luhan who was giving her a tour of the house. Jinri was in absolute awe at the beauty of the not-so-humble abode. They passed a room that Luhan called the gallery where on the walls hung beautiful pieces of art and sculptures and a room which was filled with musical instruments. The entire time, Jinri was a step behind Luhan and neither one of them had taken the initiative to come closer no matter how strong the mutual feelings they shared for each other to have some sort of contact or interaction.

They reached the end of the second floor west wing where apparently Luhan's room was. Luhan opened the door and allowed Jinri to enter first. The room was relatively simple, with a grey wallpaper and a large bookshelf on one side of the room along with a TV set on the opposite side. And, as Jinri expected, no bed just a small couch and a study desk which was clearly rarely used. What really caught Jinri's attention though was the large window above the sofa that overlooked the outskirts of the valley.

A beautiful river made its way downwards the sloping plains where an outstretch of greenery filled the land and to the side were thick luscious trees damp with rain water from last night's semi-annual downpour. Jinri felt like she was in heaven.

"Are you afraid of heights?" Luhan suddenly asked making Jinri turn her head to the side towards him who was looking at the trees.

"No. Why the sudden question?" Jinri asked back

"I want to show you something." Luhan said as he jumped on the windowsill and extending his hand outwards for Jinri to grab. "You trust me right?" He inquired when he saw the doubtful look that was etched on Jinri's face. Luhan recived a nod in response and felt Jinri's soft hands on his cold ones. She was taken by surprise when Luhan cradled her back and legs on his arms an instructed her to encircle her arms around his neck. She followed his instruction without question.

Without a moment to lose, he lept into the air and landed on the nearest tree branch. Jinri loved the sensation of every jump and every leap Luhan took. The wind going against their direction and blowing through her long hair made her feel so free. She gazed up and saw Luhan's focused gaze concentrating on the path he was taking and Jinri realized, maybe not for the first time, that she's fallen in love.
