Chapter 6

Fateful Meeting

You blame that smile.  That silly, annoying, charming, delightfully captivating smile of his that whenever you see you can’t help but do the same.  It was amazing how it came to him so naturally, his lips pulling back as a grin widens across his cheeks reaching his downward crescent shaped eyes.  His jaw jutting forward as he shows his teeth with that foolish “heeeee” sound that he makes.

All in all it wasn’t his celebrity status or his handsome face.  It wasn’t even that slick way of talking that he does that mattered.  What it really came down to in the end was that smile.  That perfectly molded smile that you have come to know and love so well.

You have left the dining table for a more comfortable place for a conversation with the offer of coffee along with it.  Your couch a very much preferable choice than two chairs obstructed by a table in between.  So you took the coffee cup in your hands as you turned to face the beautiful young man sitting beside you, who seemingly had been flirting with you for the better part of the day, but still you’re not so sure.  You’re not exactly the type to have gods fall on your feet on a daily basis.  And you are quite sure that it wasn’t your less than magnificent cooking or better described as frying that could’ve hooked Junho into your clasp.  You couldn’t help but wonder what virtuous act you could’ve done in the past that made you deserve such good fortune in this life.

Junho was chatting away about this and that, his voice and laughter echoing across the room.  You on the other hand kept being distracted by a little speck of dust in his hair that fell across his forehead.  You weren’t exactly suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder, but you find that tiny speck of dust irritatingly disturbing like it was diverting your attention from a sight so beautiful.

You have talked for hours, sharing stories about the things you both love and hate in this world.  And he would make you laugh so much that you could feel it in your heart.  Junho racks his brain even more thinking of stories that he could tell you that could elicit that laughter of yours.  Because that sound was beginning to act like a drug to him.  It was enchanting…you were enchanting to him.  Even the way you would disagree with him he found fascinating.  It’s a rarity for him these days, having someone oppose his thoughts and not agree with everything he says for him to like them.  You always had something to add to the conversation, you weren’t just a mirror.  You were someone he can honestly talk to.

Junho sets his cup down on the table after taking a sip.  “You would let me know if I’m already a disturbance to you, right?  Because, I can leave if you want me to.”  He points to the direction of the door with his thumb.

“Do you want to leave already?”  One of your eyebrows arched as you tilt your head to the side.

“Do you want me to leave?”  He asked in a voice deep enough that you could feel it under your skin more than you could hear it.

You look down to your hands nursing the warm cup of coffee.  “Well…if you want to…then I guess…I can’t do anything about it.  I mean I don’t want to keep you here against your will…and besides you might be busy and -”

Junho rubbed at his neck as his tongue darts out to wet his lips.  He could slowly feel the tips of his ears turning red as he found you beneath contempt and almost ridiculous, but at the same time, he couldn’t help but find you to be so cute.

“Could you possibly be more insecure?”  He narrows his eyes at her as a smile slowly fights to break out from his lips despite his best efforts.  “If you tried really, really hard do you think you could actually believe that I’m spending time with you because I like being with you and nothing else.”

You raised your head to look at him and returned a smirk.  “Nothing else?”

“Well…maybe not nothing else.”  His mind was blank for a moment as he hears you question his real intentions in a subtle way.  “Maybe, the hope of friendship or something to that effect.”  He murmured and you smile at his attempt to save himself.  “The things is…”  he said as he looked you in the eyes, his you find to be a stunning brown that got darker as they got closer to the pupil, like two autumn pools in his eyes.  “You’re interesting and I enjoy your company.  Truly.”

You your lips in between your teeth and slowly let them roll back out and then a smile gradually appeared on your lips as a faint tint colors your cheeks.  “Same here.”

“Good.”  He sighed as he carefully tucked a strand of your hair behind your ear.  And though stiffened from the unexpected contact you didn’t move away from his touch.

You noticed how you both have moved closer to each other as you talked, either unconsciously or not, you’re not one to complain.  He smiled his most charming smile once again that seems to light up the darkest corners of the room, but when you looked, somehow that tiny speck of dust was still there attached to his hair.  You kept getting distracted by it since you first saw it cling on his hair.  And at last, finally you give in to the temptation and leaned in to brush it away.

Junho on the other hand was running close to a misunderstanding.  He thought you were leaning in to kiss him.  And though surprised that you made the initial move, he was thrilled to think that you were after all attracted to him enough to lean in for a kiss.  He does the same, which ended up with him mostly missing your lips and awkwardly bumping your noses together with both having a surprised and embarrassed look painted all over your faces.

It was hard to tell who was more embarrassed because you both blushed a deep color red as you both stammered out an apology.  But thinking about it again, it showed more on your side as you bolted up from the couch looking absolutely mortified.

“I’m so sorry.” you quipped as your blood stilled in your veins.

He stood up with you.  “No, I’m sorry.”

“I wasn’t…I mean…it wasn’t.  Not a kiss.  It was dirt.”  You began to stutter as you touch the hair on your own head.

“Dirt?

“You have dirt on your hair.”  You pointed to his head.  “I was just trying to take it off.”

He crosses his arms over his chest and then puts them on his jean pockets and then scratches his head as his jaw clenched while his mind d helplessly to find an excuse on why he tried to kiss you.

“Sorry.  I was…then you were…you know.  So, I…”  Every muscle in his torso tightened as he fought back the urge to surrender and just punch himself to knock himself out and escape the embarrassment.  He has never misread a girl before, but this time he was just a long way off course.  He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as he squeezed his eyes shut.  “I should go.”  He moves towards the door.

“Okay?”  you answered unsure as you followed him to the door.

“Thanks for the food.” he said before he heads out.  “I had a great time.  Really.”  He smiled, but it was different from his usual.

“You’re welcome.” You replied coldly, a little disappointed about his reaction.  You started to think if he was leaving or scurrying off as fast as he could because he thought you were trying to throw yourself at him and he just wasn’t that interested to catch you.

“Later.” He said still all red as he stood on your doorway.

“Uhm.”  You nodded before closing the door.

A deep exhale escaped between your lips as you leaned back against the door.  “Stupid.  Stupid.  Stupid.” You kept telling yourself as you relive your recently most embarrassing moment in your head.

“Are you still there?”  you heard Junho’s voice through the door along with a light knock.

You covered your mouth in surprise at the thought that he might have heard you from the door.  “Junho?”

“Uhm.  No need to open up again.  Just wanted to say, I’m usually much better than that...at kissing I mean.  Goodnight.”
