Chapter 11

Fateful Meeting

The historical origin of a coin toss is the interpretation of a chance outcome as the expression of divine will.  Believing that something out there other than us can shift our future in one way or the other - if we let it - If we choose to leave what comes next to fate.  So with one flip of a coin, what happens next is decided.

Junho insisted on escorting you back to your door after the date even though you live only a floor up from him.  You and called it ‘trying to act like a gentleman’.  His response was that it was a way to squeeze out every minute he can to be with you.

“Thank you, I had a wonderful evening.”  You smiled as you leaned against your door, tucking back one piece of hair that was threatening to fall from your ponytail.

Junho stuck his hands on his pockets with a grin as he watched you and the glow on your cheeks.  “Thank you for agreeing to go out with me.  You’re always a delight to be with.”

“Well-“  You said as you opened your door hiding the soft pink that highlighted your cheeks from his compliment.  “You better get going if you don’t want to be stuck in traffic.”  You teased and he laughed, throwing his head back.

“Yeah, I heard it’s a mess from your floor to mine.  Do you think I should take the stairs instead of the elevator?”  He said scratching the back of his neck and you snickered.  “So… I’ll see you tomorrow then.”  He had a smug look about his face.  “I did win after all.”  He crossed his arms over his chest and his lips.

Your face crinkled in thought as your eyes snapped at him causing him to grin even wider.  The blood drained on your face and you sighed softly in response, remembering how you lost to a coin toss and how you had to face his famous celebrity friends the next evening.  “I know.”  You said softly almost inaudible.

He threw his head back with a laugh and held your shoulders with both hands to give you a light shake.  “Please don’t look so disappointed.  They’re nice people.  You’ll like them when you get to know them, just don’t like them too much.  And believe me, they’ll like you too, just not too much either I hope.”  You glanced back at Junho only to see his smile had taken permanent residence on his face and he successfully managed to coax a small smile from you in response.  Somehow he seemed so determined to break the gnawing little worry in the pit of your stomach.

You shook your head, embarrassed.  “I doubt that they will, but – whatever.”  You rolled your eyes at him.  “Anyway, do I need to bring anything?”

“Nope.  Everything’s covered.”

“I’d feel bad if I had to come empty handed.”

“Then bring whatever you want to.”  His smile was so infectious that you couldn’t help but do the same.  Junho watched bemusedly as your cheeks acquired a delightful shade of pink.

“Anything I want.”  You repeated, blinking several time as your brain switched gears.  “Well, I’ll ponder over it, so…you should go home.”

“I should.”  He replied rubbing his neck self-consciously.  “Uhm-“  He made a noise like he wanted to say something, but couldn’t bring himself to do so.

There was silence for several seconds before you finally asked.  “What is it?”

Junho’s ears began to turn pinkish-red as he continues to fan himself with his hands nervously.  “Well, I was thinking, I did win the coin flip and…well…if it’s not too much to ask…maybe I could…get…a kiss…a goodnight kiss…before I go?”  Junho began to mumble almost incoherently, but you managed to catch a few words and piece them all together into a sensible sentence.  You hesitated for a while and then without much thought you leaned up to him and kissed him softly on his cheek.  As you back away from him, you looked up to see a light in his eyes as his grin became wider and his eyes a whole lot smaller.

“Go home.”  You said with a light push on his shoulder trying to chase away the awkwardness in the air that hangs between you.  “Send me a message, so I know you got home safe, okay?”

He laughed and you grinned at the happy sound and then you let yourself in to your flat still with a smile plastered all over your face.  You managed to take a quick shower before going to bed all the while keeping your mind preoccupied on what to bring with you for tomorrow’s dinner.

You got out of the bath, drying your hair unable to erase the smile on your face.  It’s been a great week for you and you hope this won’t be another rollercoaster ride that would just come crushing down just as fast as it went up.  You sat at the edge of your bed reaching for your cellphone to check the time, 11:10 p.m.  You tapped on the message icon and quickly flipped through the texts all coming from Junho.

I’m home!   Got here safe after getting caught up in the elevator. Hahaha :) - 10:23 p.m.

How come there’s no reply from you?  You said to send you a message as soon as I’m home. :( - 10:28 p.m.

Hey!  Are you really ignoring me right now?  Although you didn’t really say you were going to reply…but… - 10:33 p.m.

Are you sleeping already? – 10:50 p.m.

How could you leave me hanging? – 10:53 p.m.

Now I’m worried.  Are you alright? – 11:01 p.m.

At least send me a dot so I’d know you’re alright.  Or I am so coming up there to check on you. – 11:06 p.m.

You immediately sent your message in reply to Junho’s numerous ones with lightning bolt speed of your fingers.

I’m fine.  Just got out of the shower.  No need to come over.  Sorry.  I didn’t think you would actually send me a message.

Well you did say to send you one.

So how’s the traffic from my place to yours?  Judging from the time you sent me your text it took you a while to get home. Hahaha

Actually, I got held up at your floor.  This old lady got out with a bunch of grocery bags and I couldn’t help but help her to her flat.

That must be Mrs. Chung.

Mrs. Chung?

His grandson lives on the flat a few doors from mine.  She usually comes to visit him often to stock up on his groceries and stuff.  She’s a nice old lady who’s good at making stew. :)

You’re close? If she's good at making stew and handing them out, then I might just get close to her too. :)

A bit. And that's not such a bad idea. Anyway, it’s a good thing you’re the typical knight in shining armor.

I make for a good boyfriend, right?

You make a good anything.  You’re Lee Junho after all.  I'm sure Mrs. Chung would like to have a boyfriend like you anytime. haha Anyway, I should sleep so I could at least look good for tomorrow.  Get togethers are soooo troublesome. T-T

Don’t look too good.  I want them to like you and vice versa, but not so much.

Goodnight Junho.

Can’t wait for tomorrow.  I miss you already. Goodnight. And just for the record, I was thinking of being good for you, not Mrs. Chung.

You sank bank against the pillows like you had the air knocked out of you.  As if it wasn’t enough that Junho had been crazy wonderful this evening, he had to be perfectly sweet in his messages amplifying the nervous bubbles in your stomach.
