“Should we just break up now?” He said the words both of them were thinking as they sat on the floor of her one-bedroom apartment, exhausted from all the arguing and screaming.

She folded her hands tightly and stared at them, “Is that what you want?”

“Yes…” he whispered.

They both knew it was coming: the inevitable end, the part that hurts the most in every relationship. There were no tears though, no yelling, no regrets. They had tried their best, but it just wasn’t enough. Sometimes sacrifices must be made for one’s dreams.

“Okay.”

It was just that simple. This was the best decision for both of them at the moment.

A few months later, she got the letter she had been waiting for, entrance to Parsons The New School For Design. But this meant she had to go back to New York City for a few years. While she had only lived here for a few years, Seoul had become her home. After debating back and forth, she knew she had to go.

She looked around the apartment one last time. Everything had already been packed up and shipped to America. So many memories rushed through her head, memories she would try very hard to forget in a new city.

As she stepped out of the building, she took one last look at the place she had lived for so many years. Her eyes wandered to one particular apartment window. He probably wasn’t home right now. They’d already said bye the day before. She didn’t want to see him the day she left. It would be too dramatic and heart breaking.

After taking one more breath, she opened the taxi’s door.

“Heejin!”

She turned to see Doojoon running towards her. “Oppa? What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be at training.”

He panted, trying to catch his breath. “Don’t go.”

Even though she’d been waiting to hear those words, it was too little too late. “Mianhe oppa. I have to go. Just like you have to pursue your dreams, I have to go after mine.”

For the first time in his life, his eyes welled up with tears for someone other than family. “What if I didn’t want to pursue them anymore if it meant losing you?”

curved into the smile that used to be the highlight of his day. “Don’t give up your dreams for me. It’s not worth it. And anyway, I’ll only come back if you’re famous.”

He suddenly grabbed her into his arms and hugged her, scared he would never see her again. “Don’t go,” he said again.

She hugged him back, forcing the tears back. She couldn’t let him see her cry. “It’s not the end, oppa. Think of it as a new beginning for both of us. Let’s just put all our memories in a beautiful bubble that will never burst. We should be happy for each other. Both of us have been given the opportunity to go after what we’ve worked hard for.”

A tear slid down Doojoon’s left eye as he said, “You’ll always have my heart, Heejin. Always.”

“Me too.”
