Luhan the New Student

You're in My Life

Luhan followed close behind me while I took him to the principal’s office. There was the secretary on her computer. When we came in, she looked up and I shyly said, “Hello, this is the new transfer student.” The lady smiled, “Ah, yes! Lu Han?” He bowed, “Hello.” She guided us to where the principal was and Yongguk’s father was writing things on some papers. Yongguk looked a lot like him, now that I saw his dad again. The secretary closed the door and the principal stood up, “Hello again, Kang Sunmi.” I bowed. Yongguk’s dad turned to Luhan, “And you must be Lu Han?” Luhan bowed, “Yes sir.” Yongguk’s dad gave Luhan his schedule, “And you are also Sunmi’s cousin I believe?” Luhan nodded while glancing at me, “Ne, that is correct, sir.”
The principal nodded, “Alright then. Kang Sunmi, would you mind giving Lu Han and me a moment? It won’t be very long. You may wait outside the door until we are done.” I slowly answered, “Uh, ne sir.” I looked at Luhan for a moment to see if he was okay with this, and he smiled, conforming that it was. I went out of the principal’s office and sat on the bench outside.
Four minutes to go before class started. Luhan finally came out and I stood up, “What did he want?” Luhan didn’t exactly look me in the eye, “Um, just telling me the rules and stuff.” I said, “Oh, well okay.” Then I piped up, “You have everything I have on your schedule right?” He gave me his paper and I looked. The same exact thing. I smiled, “Okay, let’s get going before we’re late.” Luhan agreed, “Ne, Sunmi-ah.”
We passed a group of whispering girls who I could hear them say, “Ooo a new student!” “He looks hot.” “Is he rich?” “Omg, he’s like an angel.” “What’s his name?” I sighed and Luhan shook his head, “Ah, don’t worry, Sunmi. I’ll be fine.” I gave a sympathetic smile, “Okay then.”

Luhan and I made it to the class door. I told him, “Just stay up in the front and when the teacher comes, she’ll tell you where to sit.” He nodded and followed me into class. Luhan stayed in the front while I went to my seat. Everyone was either looking at me or him, wondering why I came in with a new student when I was just one a week ago. The bell rang and the teacher came in. All the students became silent.

The teacher looked at Luhan and announced to the class, “We have another new student today,” she turned to my ‘cousin’, “and you may now introduce yourself.” Luhan bowed, “Hi, I am Luhan. Please treat me well.”

Some girls squealed at his soothing voice and good looks; I began to worry. The teacher paid no attention to the girls, “Yes, alright Luhan, you will sit next to the girl Sunmi.” I smiled since there were some empty seats around me. I finally noticed Eunji and she told me in a hushed tone, “Sunmi! Is that your cousin?” I said, “Yes, I hope things will be okay…” Eunji’s eyes widened, “He’s so cute.” I sighed, “Not you too…” Luhan plumped himself in his new seat and whispered, “This was your parents’ orders. Are you okay with it?” I nodded, taking notice of how Luhan really didn’t care about the class, but watching out for me. Besides, we both learned the lessons already by private tutors, so we didn’t pay much attention. The rest of the class seemed to pay no attention to the lesson either, but to us.

After that class, Luhan was surrounded by a swarm of people. Mostly giggling girls made up the group. Luhan stayed close to me though, which sadly, I was surrounded too. Thankfully, we made through our classes safely. Eunji was kind of close to me too, but she was blocked a lot by the crowd.

I think everyone knew that he was my ‘cousin’ by all the gossip. Luhan and I went into lunch and B.A.P was already there since the two of us got slowed down by the crowed. I said to Luhan, “We’re going to sit with those people over there, arrasso?” Luhan walked to get some food, “Okay. Plus, there are no girls over there but one.”

After we fetched our lunch, I guided him to B.A.P’s table. But there was another person there…

I almost dropped my tray. Luhan and his fast reflexes caught it, “Woah, are you okay Sunmi?” I said nothing, staring at the new boy at the table. Nobody noticed us yet, there were too many people talking. Luhan went in front of my face, “Sunmi?” Stunned, I looked closer at the boy. He…

“Sunmi!” Luhan desperately cried. I blinked, “I’m so sorry, Luhan.” Luhan took my pulse without anyone looking, “Are you okay?” I took a breath, “I think so…” He felt my forehead, “You seem fine, but are you sure?” I slowly bobbed my head up and down, “Just an accident…” Luhan seemed uneasy and watched me carefully.

As Luhan and I walked closer, my heart started beating faster. Zelo saw us first, “Noona!” B.A.P and Eunji turned around to look at us. The two of us sat down. Himchan called, “My baby Sunmi! Come to oppa!” Yongguk lightly hit him in the shoulder, “Yah, you’re never going to be her oppa.” Daehyun ignored them, “Sunmi, is that your cousin?” My voice said, “Yes, B.A.P, meet my cousin, Luhan. Luhan, this is B.A.P. They’re really nice.” Luhan bowed, “Hello.” While B.A.P was introducing themselves like last week, my eyes were glued to the extra boy who wasn’t there last week. He… was the guy who I bumped in to at the mall. He was the guy in my dreams. I gulped, this can’t be a coincidence.

When it came to his turn for introducing himself, his voice soothed out, “Hi, I’m Youngjae. Nice to meet you.” My heart skipped a beat, it WAS him, Mr. Y! His voice! It was him!

I zoned out for a few seconds, stunned by him, until Luhan lightly shook my shoulders, “Yah, Sunmi, are you sure you’re okay?” I weakly sighed, “I… I think so?” Luhan frowned, “I’ll check on you at home.”

Then Youngjae talked to me, “Wait, didn’t I bump into you at the mall on Saturday?” He remembers me too? B.A.P and Eunji’s mouths fell open.

My throat was so dry, but I managed to say, “Yeah…” Eunji faced me, “What? I don’t remember seeing Youngjae.” I feebly said, “You were in the bathroom.” Eunji murmured, “Oh.”

My mind raced, my thoughts running everywhere, my eyes staring at Youngjae. How did he suddenly pop up here? I was in a small panic mode, what’s wrong with me? I was quiet for a while, until Zelo spoke to me, “Noona~ did you bring the cherry tomatoes?”

My eyes widened, did I forget them? I dug through my backpack and yes, I remembered them. I gave them bag to the sweet maknae, “Here you go Zelo-ah!” Zelo’s face brightened, “Yay! Thank you!” and he ate them quickly.

While the group was talking about a project and Luhan watching me, Youngjae turned to me and my heart jumped. Youngjae smiled, “I’m sorry for crashing into you. I was in a rush and well, yeah. Mianhae.” I quickly said, “No, it is okay! I’m sorry again too. I wasn’t looking either.” Youngjae spoke, “Ah, okay. Are we friends now?” I stuttered nervously, “I- I guess so.” He didn’t seem to notice, “That’s good! I’m Yoo Youngjae, hi~” I think I was blushing a lot because then he held out his hand for me to shake it like an American. I took it, “Kang Sunmi.” I let go, and Youngjae seemed okay. Luhan pretended to be paying attention to the other people’s conversation.

Youngjae didn’t really seem interested in what the others were saying, so he talked to me again. “So, Zelo told me that you’re from America?” I shyly nodded, “Yes, that’s why you shook hands instead of bowing?” Youngjae laughed, “How did you know?” Oh, I was right? I puffed out my lips, “I was just guessing.” His laugh was so angelic and cute. Youngjae probably had one of the cutest laughs ever. My temperature started rising by the second that it seemed. I could just feel my ears get hot…

Youngjae was so easy to talk to, but the bell had rung. Youngjae waved goodbye and I mirrored him. It felt strange, I have seen him again. I bit my lip, my dream had become true. That means, that day of giving me an actual rose is going to come. Very soon.

Jongup was patiently waiting for me, “Noona, are you ready?” Coming back in the present once again, I answered, “Oh, yes! Mianhae, Jongup-ah!” He gave a bright smile to me, “That’s okay. Is your cousin coming too?” I looked at Luhan who solemnly nodded. I smiled back to Jongup, “Yes, let’s go dancing.”

The three of us walked to our destination. We changed into our dance clothes and prepared warm ups. I couldn’t help but notice Jongup’s large muscles, they were so… big. I blushed at the comment I had made when I first met him…

The teacher came and made Luhan introduce himself. Luhan seemed pretty excited for this class. He probably likes dancing too I’m guessing.

Today, the dance instructor said he wanted to see each of us dance solitarily to figure out how good we were at dancing. There were about 20 students in this class and one by one, a person went to dance for about 2 minutes.

Jongup was before me and when it was his turn, he asked the instructor for Chris Brown’s ‘Turn up the Music’. The music started and Jongup was perfect! He had all the right steps and beat. Some were really hard looking too. When he was done, everyone loudly clapped. When Jongup was back next to me, I squealed, “Jongup! You are the best dancer ever!” He shyly turned away, “Ah, noona, thanks, but I’m not that good.” I shook my head, “No! You are just so amazing! I have never seen anyone dance better than you! Ever!” Jongup’s modest voice said, “Well, thank you for your kind words.”

It was my turn and I didn’t request for anything, so the teacher just put a song with good beat. My body went with the sound and beats nicely. After my performance was done, Jongup clapped, “That was really good!” I shyly smiled, “Thanks. But you’re better than me.” Jongup pursed his lips, “Noona stop saying that. Please?” I opened my mouth, “But-“

“Okay Luhan, it’s your turn, unless you don’t want to do it, that’s fine.” The teacher said. I shut my mouth up and watched Luhan’s reaction. Luhan politely nodded and went in the middle where everyone was going to let him have space. The other students watched curiously as Luhan waited for the music. The music started and so did Luhan. My mouth and others gaped, Luhan was really good too. Some girls were silently squealing to themselves and the guys were amazed. When he was done, everyone clapped really loud. I glimpsed at the teacher and he was smiling proud at his new student.

Luhan took a bow and came back next to me. Everyone was staring at him, all amazed. Since Luhan was the last one, the teacher went back on his lesson. I excitedly whispered to Luhan, “That was really excellent! I never knew you could dance!” Luhan cutely smiled, “Thank you. There are many things you don’t know about your guards.” And he winked.

After dance class, the other guys clapped Luhan on the back and the girls cheered at his abilities to dance really well. Slowly, the two of us lost all of them as Jongup went to a different class. Luhan memorized his schedule, “So, singing class next?” I said, “Yep, the teacher is really nice.”

We walked together towards the singing class and went in. Luhan waited up in the front of the class again as I placed myself in my desk. There were two empty seats on both sides of me, so Luhan was able to sit in one of them. However, the seat on my left wasn’t empty anymore today. My dream boy was there.

I slightly gasped. My jaw dropped. Youngjae looked who had sat on the seat on his right and brightened at me, “Sunmi-ah!” As he said my name, my heart raced even more. I weakly said, “Hi…” Youngjae didn’t notice my unstable voice and he said, “Hello again! I didn’t know you had singing class with me! That’s cool.” I looked down, “Yeah…” Youngjae looked at Luhan, “Bwoh? Your cousin is here too? Hey, that’s really nice, I’m so lonely in here.” I slowly tilted my head back up, “Really?” Youngjae said, “Mhm.” and smiled that made me almost die. The teacher came and everything went quiet. Luhan introduced himself and sat on my right.
So now I was in between two nice and attractive boys. The girls were being envious of me again; I shrank a little in my seat.

I kept shifting my eyes at Youngjae and he didn’t notice thankfully, but Luhan did. He whispered, “He crashed into you on Saturday, didn’t he?” I said, “Yeah, I’m amazed that I saw him again. And he’s here. But I don’t think he’s a threat.” Luhan made a thumbs up and listened back to the teacher.

She said some announcements like a music festival in January and a singing competition in February around Valentine’s Day. Luhan took notes on them and I looked at his paper. It was a notepad with my family’s logo: a sweet looking K. I looked at his handwriting; it was very neat, much neater than mine.

The teacher said something that snapped up my attention, “Today, we are going to see how improved we are in our vocals. New students, Sunmi and Luhan, as always, once a month, we do a short solo with each and every one of you and I will recommend any tips. We will go by the order you are seated row by row.”

A really pretty girl went up first. I remembered her name was Song Ji Eun. She sang a sweet melody that was like a lullaby with her sweet voice. Everyone clapped when she finished with an aegyo.

Slowly, the last people were Youngjae, me, and then Luhan. Youngjae went to the front and sang. At the first note, I was stunned. This beautiful voice of his was magical. He had extremely good lungs that exhaled magnificent sound. Youngjae’s singing was silky and sweet like honey. At the final lyrics, Nado moreuge tto beoreutcheoreom yeogi wanneunji molla (so without knowing, like a habit, I came here), I couldn’t help but clap along with the rest of the class. Apparently, they were always amazed at his voice too.

It became my turn, and when Youngjae came back, he patted my shoulder, “Your turn.” I felt like electricity passed through me from his hand. Time seemed to slow down. My mouth felt so dry like cotton balls we stuffed in my mouth, not because it was my turn, but because of Youngjae’s singing. And because he touched me too. My quavering voice said, “You were really incredible.” Youngjae shook his head, “I don’t understand how everybody says that. I’m not good.” These B.A.P boys are so modest that it amazes me. I was going to say something back, but the teacher kindly said, “Sunmi, is there a problem? You do not have to sing for today if you feel uncomfortable.” I said, “No, I’m fine. I’ll sing.” I stood up and walked up.

I didn’t know what to sing for a moment. I racked my brain for something, but nothing really came. Since I came from America a little over than a week ago, I decided to sing a song in English. Also, I didn’t really know too many Korean songs…

I shook off the uncommon feelings that Youngjae gave me, and took a deep breath. The students were waiting curiously, wondering how the new girl’s singing was like. I ignored them to reduce the pressure and sang, “A thousand miles I came here…” So on I went, singing my heart out more than I usually did at home. My eyes sneaked at Youngjae, and he sweetly smiled. That gave me a little extra boost in sing. I ended with a bow and shyly walked back to me seat. The class clapped, including Youngjae. And I blushed.
Youngjae said to me, “Wow, Sunmi, I never knew you could do that. That’s really good!” I played with my clothes, “Thank you… You’re really good too.” We both stopped talking because Luhan was finally up there.

I was surprised at my junior guard, he can dance and sing. He started, “I was expecting to see you whom I cannot see…” Everyone was surprised too (again). This new student was a human masterpiece of the arts. Luhan sang a delicate note at the end and the entire class cheered. He modestly walked back to me and ignored the adoring, whispering class.

I said in Chinese, “I never knew any of my junior guards could sing like, that. You were astonishing.” He respectfully replied, “I’m not the only one, one of my junior guard friends could do amazing singing. His name his Chen. I do hope you meet all of Exo one day.

I beamed at him in Korean again, “I would like that very soon.”

Class ended and Luhan’s appearance of a show made him even more surrounded. Yongguk’s dad had to even come out to see what was happening. The principal waved the crowd away and the amount shrunk. I lost track of Youngjae in the crowd, and my heart sunk. I didn’t see him in any of my other classes.

My spirits lifted up again when school was over. B.A.P, Eunji, Luhan, and I met each other in front of the gates. Himchan was being a ert again, but Luhan slightly glared at him, which Himchan backed off a little bit. Eunji came up to me with her cute new clothes from shopping, “Yah! Why did you buy me that necklace!?” I shrugged, “Just for a best friend present. Nothing wrong with that.” She sighed, “Well, thank you so much, you don’t know how many times I’ve been looking at it through the window in the mall.” I winked, “No problem.”

Zelo said with happiness, “Noona! Thanks for the cherry tomatoes! They really brightened up my day!” He did an aegeyo and I smiled, “Aww, you’re welcome Zelo. Anything for you.” Himchan was going to say something, but Luhan coughed roughly. Yongguk raised his eyebrows, “Are you okay, Luhan?” Luhan looked at him cautiously, “Yeah, it was nothing…”

Jongup had to leave to the gym, so he bid farewell earlier. I watched Eunji and she kept looking at Daehyun several times. When she wasn’t looking, her crush would look at her too. I mentally smiled, they looked really cute together. I took peeks at Youngjae, and he was laughing at something Zelo told him. The way he laughed was adorable. Luhan shook my shoulder lightly, “It’s time to go, Sunmi.” On the road, the limousine was there waiting.

The two of us waved and entered the fancy vehicle. I felt so bad that I had to ride in this car while they had to walk or ride a bus home. Luhan saw me frown, “Sunmi, what’s wrong?” I sighed, “It’s him, Luhan. How…?” He understood, “I don’t know. Maybe it was your destiny. You dreamt about him, so maybe he’s your man. He looks like a good guy to me, from a guy’s standards.” I took in a deep breath, I needed somewhere to think. Luhan looked at the window and I had an idea.

“Driver? Could you please take Luhan and me to the park?” I politely asked. “Sure, just tell Luhan to tell the others we’re going there.” Luhan looked confused, “Uh, okay.”

He took out his phone and called back home. The call ended and Luhan looked at me with those deer eyes, “I haven’t left the home campus grounds in a long time. Are you sure?”

I nodded, all the junior guards were locked up in my property for ages, unless for a special mission, so they never really knew what the outside world was like. No freedom, no outside friends. I clutched Luhan’s hand tightly for sympathy, “Don’t worry, you’re going to get a taste of delicious freedom you haven’t had in a long time. Enjoy it.”
